The Seattle Seahawks used a first-round pick in this year’s draft to get a running back in Rashaad Penny from San Diego State to address one of their most glaring issues in 2017. They will enter Week 1 of the 2018 NFL season with an old hand as the team’s primary ground weapon in the form of Chris Carson.

Carson is the man listed atop Seattle’s running back depth chart, thanks to a solid showing in the offseason, according to Rotoworld.

Whereas Penny struggled to keep his health and weight since getting drafted, Carson used the rookie’s arrival as a motivation to prove to the Seahawks that the answer to their rushing game issues is someone who’s been with the team last year. In 2017, his rookie season, Carson rushed for only 208 yards, but he only appeared in four games. During the training camp, Carson played mostly with the first-team, as Penny watched from the sidelines nursing a finger injury.

It is crucial for the Seahawks to get significant production from their backfield, not only to diversify their attack, but also to ease the load off the shoulders of Russell Wilson, who is coming off a season in which he became the first quarterback in 27 seasons to lead his team in rushing yards with 586 to his name.

Chris Carson and the Seahawks, however, will have an acid test coming their way in Week 1, as they face the Denver Broncos’ stout defense that allowed the fifth-fewest rushing yards per game last season.
