The Seattle Seahawks have missed the NFL playoffs for the first time in six years, which has the team looking to reshaping the roster.

During a recent interview with NFL Network, veteran defensive end Cliff Avril stated that he believes that the Seahawks should look to rebuild the roster around Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson moving forward.

[If the Seahawks are rebuilding], they kind of have to [rebuild around Russell Wilson]. They paid him all that money. But since I've been there at least, everything has been defense. The core backbone of the team has always been defense. If the defense is playing well and getting turnovers, it gives Russ more opportunities. It'd be hard for me to completely see them throwing that mindset away.

Wilson is coming off a strong 2017 season that earned him some MVP consideration finishing first in the NFL with 34 touchdown passes, ninth with 3,983 passing yards, and 10th with a 95.4 quarterback rating. However, Seattle had some serious struggles in the running game ranking 23rd overall with Wilson leading the team in rushing with 586 yards while no running back on the roster recorded more than 250 yards. Wilson also scored three of the team’s four rushing touchdowns this past season.

The Seahawks also had notable struggles along the offensive line that resulted in Wilson often times having to make plays on the move throughout much of the season. It could be one of the biggest areas that the front office looks to improve the offense to better allow for the 29-year-old to make plays with his arm.

Seattle could also venture into free agency to bring on a veteran running back or through the 2018 NFL Draft. What should also be taken into consideration is that Wilson has two more left years on his four-year, $87.6 million contract that is worth 32.5 million. This alone may push the Seahawks to revamp the roster to put them back in the playoff mix and possibly further.
