Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll has revealed that defensive end Dion Jordan underwent a “cleanup” surgery on his knee this offseason and will be out for 6-8 weeks, per James Palmer of NFL Network.

That’s a tough blow for Jordan, who just signed a $1.9 million restricted free-agent tender in April after coming over to Seattle as a free agent late last season. But the good news is that he is expected to return in time for training camp, which should mean he’ll be available for the start of the season.

The 28-year-old Jordan, who was the No. 3 overall pick by the Miami Dolphins in 2013, played in five games for the Seahawks last season. He played well in his limited role as a rotational pass rusher. He recorded four sacks, which was one more than his total in his first 26 games in the NFL.

Jordan missed the entire 2015 season after he was suspended for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances. He was conditionally reinstated by the NFL in 2016, but he didn’t play a down. He was later released by the Dolphins in 2017 after failing a physical.

The Seahawks will need Jordan to take on a more significant role on defense this season. They are in need of pass rush help following the departures of veterans Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril this offseason. If Jordan can return healthy from his knee surgery, he is likely to start opposite Frank Clark, who has missed the team’s offseason workout program due to contract issues.
