When the Seattle Seahawks took Jordyn Brooks in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, some fans were scratching their heads.

Seahawks general manager John Schneider defended the selection on Sports Radio 950 KJR (via Chris Crabtree of Pro Football Talk) by saying that Brooks ‘embodies‘ what the organization is all about:

“That may be his best fit is playing inside, maybe [weak-side] linebacker … But in [2018] he played outside, really did a nice job out there, playing in space, coming downhill and rushing the passer and just showing off his speed. The guy has been very, very productive and really intense. He embodies what our organization is all about with a chip on his shoulder and just being a guy that really wants to be the best at his craft. Once he’s here he’ll remind you a lot of Bobby and K.J. in the way he plays and everything.”

Throughout the pre-draft process, most scouts had Brooks as a Day 2 prospect in this year's draft. Nonetheless, leave it to the Seahawks to go against the grain and take the Texas Tech linebacker in the first round.

Besides Brooks, Seattle already has Bobby Wagner and K.J. Wright at linebacker heading into next season. However, with Wright recovering from shoulder surgery, Brooks is expected to fill in for him.

Even though Wagner signed a lucrative extension last offseason, he and Wright will both be 30 or older when the 2020 season begins. Given that, the selection of Brooks could be seen as an eventual replacement for Wagner or Wright. At the same time, Schneider is fond of what Brooks can bring the organization immediately.
