The Seattle Seahawks have been a total disaster without Russell Wilson at the helm, and Pete Carroll realizes just how lucky he has been to have Wilson as his quarterback for such a long time. After Monday night's ugly 13-10 loss to the New Orleans Saints, the Seahawks head coach essentially admitted Wilson is the reason he still has a job.

Via PFT's Michael David Smith:

“I’ve been here a long time. And if we didn’t have Russell, I probably wouldn’t have been here a long time. Think of all the magic he’s created through the years,” Carroll said. “One of the winningest quarterbacks in the history of the NFL. And it’ll be really fun when he comes back and plays football again for us this year.”

While similar things could be said for a number of other head coaches and their great quarterbacks, it's certainly the truth in this case. Carroll's NFL head coaching record is mediocre without Wilson, who immediately took the league by storm in 2012. That started an impressive run for the Seahawks, which featured a Super Bowl victory and then another Super Bowl appearance that should have been a win if not for a massive gaffe late against the New England Patriots. Wilson has also made a habit of lifting up flawed rosters with his brilliance.

With Seattle now struggling and Wilson the subject of trade rumors in the offseason, one wonders if this partnership is going to come to an end soon. If this season continues to go south, perhaps the Seahawks decide it's time to start over, which would mean letting go of Carroll and trading Wilson. It has been one heck of a run, but all good things must come to an end at some point.

For now, though, Seattle is just hoping Wilson comes back sooner rather than later.
