The New Orleans Saints were dealt a devastating blow with the thumb injury to quarterback Drew Brees. Regardless, Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll is not looking to be taken by surprise in Week 3 of the 2019 NFL season.

Head coach Sean Payton has indicated that he may utilize both of his backup quarterbacks in Teddy Bridgewater and Taysom Hill on offense while Brees is out. According to John Sigler of the Saints Wire, Carroll is making sure his defense is prepared for anything that comes their way.

“We’re preparing for everything. We have to,” Carroll said during a conference call with local media. Without Brees under center for the Saints and uncertainty in who’s replacing him, his defense doesn’t have much game film to study in preparation. “It’s a little like the first game of the year,” Carroll added.

Carroll's comments are certainly understandable. Although the loss of Brees essentially leaves this offense in a state of flux, it does provide Payton with an opportunity to try a different approach for the time being. As one of the most revered offensive minds in the NFL, he is more than capable of adjusting their game plan on the fly.

This gives Carroll all the more reason to take whatever precautions he can to ensure that his defense is not taken by surprise with any gimmicks they may see from the Saints' offense. Bridgewater is doing everything he can to establish himself as a bonafide starter while Hill's versatile skill set can make him a matchup nightmare for the opposition.

Fortunately, the Seahawks are expecting to be at full strength on the edge with defensive end Ziggy Ansah coming back to join defensive end Jadeveon Clowney.
