In a league where offense reigns king, it is obviously going to be difficult for defensive-minded guys to land head-coaching jobs in the NFL. Just take a look at some of the most recent head-coaching hires. Whether it's Adam Gase or Zac Taylor or Matt LaFleur, teams are trying to emulate what the Los Angeles Rams did with Sean McVay by going with offensive gurus.

However, Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll does not think this is the end for defensive coaches, saying that he definitely sees opportunities for them going forward because of the fact that offense is at such a premium now.

“With all of the offenses out there, anybody that can slow anybody down may get some special recognition,” said Carroll, according to Chris Perkins of The Athletic. “With the touchdowns and the scoring and the pass-completion percentages and rushing average and everything being at their all-time best, there’s maybe a young defensive coach out there that can turn it a little bit.”

Carroll makes a great point, and the Miami Dolphins and Denver Broncos may have had this very same idea in mind when they hired former defensive coordinators Brian Flores and Vic Fangio, respectively, as their new head coaches.

Carroll also said that he thinks the offensive hires are merely a trend of the moment right now, as clubs are simply trying to find the next McVay.

How long will this trend last? Who knows, but many teams will likely find out the hard way that guys like McVay don't just grow on trees.
