Midway through the 2019 regular season, it seemed Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson was closing in on his first MVP Award. But fast-forward to Saturday night when Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson was named MVP, Wilson was left with zero first-place votes, while Jackson received all 50 from voters.

Jackson undoubtedly had an electric first season as a full-time starter in the NFL, leading the league with 36 passing touchdowns and breaking the single-season rushing record for a signal caller. But no quarterback had more fourth quarter comebacks (four) or game-winning drives (five) than Wilson, who finished with 4,110 passing yards to go along with 31 touchdowns and just five interceptions, the fewest of his career.

Wilson led Seattle to an 11-5 record, the most regular-season wins that he has racked up since the 2014 campaign. He was named to the Pro Bowl for the third consecutive season and the sixth time overall. Postseason success is not supposed to factor into the Award, but Wilson won a road game against Philadelphia in the Wild Card round, while the Ravens were a one-and-done after falling to the Titans at home during the Divisional round.

The unanimous nature of Jackson's MVP win indicates how captivated the league was with the Ravens' quarterback, who brings a skill set that has not previously been showcased with such continued effectiveness. Wilson of the Seahawks will remain a favorite to win the MVP in 2020, even though he'll likely have to go through Jackson again to do so.
