The Seattle Seahawks are set to square off against the Denver Broncos in the preseason opener on Thursday. Unfortunately, they will be without tight end Ed Dickson for the preseason.

Dickson had been nursing a knee injury that he coach Pete Carroll indicated may need surgery. According to Greg Bell of the News Tribune, he went through with the procedure and is slated to miss up to 4-5 weeks:

“TE Ed Dickson has knee surgery,” Pete Carroll says. “We are hoping it’s a 4 to 5 week deal.”

Carroll's timetable would put Dickson at risk for potentially missing the 2019 NFL season opener versus the Cincinnati Bengals. Regardless, it is clear that the Seahawks were hoping to get the injury out of the way as soon as possible.

Dickson is entering his second season with the Seahawks after signing a three-year deal with them last offseason. He finished the 2018 campaign with 12 receptions for 143 yards and two touchdowns. Despite the modest receiving numbers, his experience as a veteran brings some much-needed stability up front.

Seattle has now done what they can to shore up some more depth at the tight end position with the addition of Jackson Harris and Wes Saxton. Meanwhile, Dickson's absence will open things up for Nick Vannett and Will Dissly to make their case as the clear-cut starters.

With plenty of competition at tight end, the preseason should prove to be a vital time for this group. It should be interesting to see how the pecking order is established once Dickson is able to make his return within the next month or so.
