Veteran Sebastian Janikowski is going to be the kicker of the Seattle Seahawks. That much is ascertained after the Seattle Seahawks announced on Monday that they had released Jason Myers, who was the only other player in competition with Janikowski for the Seahawks’ kicker job.

Janikowski was signed by the Seahawks last April to a one-year contract worth $2.015 million, with $600,000 guaranteed money. That Janikowski beat Myers for the role isn’t at all surprising, as it was always expected that he'd capture the job since the latter didn’t play that well last season for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In 2017, Myers connected on 11 of his 15 field goal attempts for a 73.3 percent success rate. He also missed two of his 17 extra-point attempts. Those numbers pale in comparison to what Janikowski had in 2016 – the last time he saw action – when he drained 29 of his 35 field goal attempts, which included three successful kicks from at least 50 yards deep, and made 37 of 39 extra point chances.

Janikowski missed all of 2017 after getting placed on the injured reserve list by the Raiders due to a back injury.

Sebastian Janikowski was taken in the first round, 17th overall, by the Oakland Raiders in the 2000 NFL Draft and spent his first 18 seasons in the league with that team prior to inking a deal with the Seahawks.
