Seattle Seahawks linebacker K.J. Wright is doubtful to play in his team’s season opener, which will come in just a little over a week from now, after having a minor procedure done on his knee. What that also means is that rookie linebacker Shaquem Griffin is poised to make his regular-season debut in the NFL as a starter on Sep. 9 against the Denver Broncos.

And it’s not going to be such a controversial decision to make for the Seahawks, as Griffin has been tearing it up on the field in the preseason. In fact, he’s paced the team in the preseason with 24 tackles, the last eight coming during a 30-19 home loss on Thursday to the Oakland Raiders.

With the looming possibility of getting a start in Week 1 of the regular season, Shaquem Griffin, the former Central Florida star, expressed his excitement over the official start of his NFL career next week in Mile High City, per Curtis Crabtree of Pro Football Talk.

“I’m more than excited to get everything started,” Griffin said after the game. “I got guys like K.J. and Bobby (Wagner) that always keep me in tune and make sure I stay in my playbook. … Having those guys as a mentor has definitely helped me out and prepared me for the games coming up.”

The Seahawks selected Griffin in the fifth round of this year’s NFL Draft to give their weakside linebacker position additional depth behind Wright. While there are questions about whether Griffin could handle NFL competition without a left hand, he’s out to prove, just as he always has for most of his life, that in the end, his missing body part is not going to be a huge hindrance for him to succeed.
