San Francisco 49ers star cornerback Richard Sherman is set to make his long-awaited return back to Centurylink Field on Sunday afternoon for the first time as a visiting player against his former team in the form of the Seattle Seahawks.

This has put forth a conversation about how things transpired to get to that point where Sherman was let go by the franchise after seven seasons. Among those that have expressed disdain for how the entire situation went is wide receiver Doug Baldwin, who voiced on Thursday that he did feel the franchise should have given his ex-teammate a chance to finish his career in Seattle. “I thought it was really sh**ty — to be honest with you — how it ended,” Baldwin stated on Thursday. “[I] would really have liked for him to stay here and have an opportunity to finish his career with this organization but it's part of the business. It doesn't work out that way.”

This was simply a matter that had played out in a way that didn't give Sherman the opportunity to exit the franchise on his own terms. Instead, he was released from his contract as the team demonstrated a lack of belief he could return to his previous playing level prior to the injury.

The Seahawks' decision to go this route has led to many of their current players and close friends of Sherman such as Baldwin, Bobby Wagner, and previously Earl Thomas to voice their disgruntlement with how that all went down. However, it has now set up an opportunity for Sherman to return in another uniform where he will surely hear much appreciation from the fans for what he did during his tenure as one of the key pieces of the secondary that helped them reach two Super Bowls and earn their first win at that stage.

Ultimately, it was a situation that showed that the NFL is at its core a business where decisions are made primarily on that basis.
