The Seattle Seahawks have dominated headlines on the Wednesday prior to the start of free agency. They traded defensive end Michael Bennett to the Philadelphia Eagles, and now it appears star cornerback Richard Sherman is on his way out as well.

Or, at least, temporarily. From the NFL Media's Michael Silver:

“The Seahawks plan to release Richard Sherman in the next couple of days. If he doesn't land a big deal elsewhere they are open to bringing him back at a lower salary.”

This report comes on the heels of the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport stating that the Seahawks would explore trade options before deciding to cut or keep Sherman at a lower price. Given his $13.2 million cap hit, the offers coming Seattle's way likely won't be too large considering interested teams can just wait until he's released.

With Bennett on the way out and both Kam Chancellor and Cliff Avril questionable to return after serious injuries, it will interesting to see if Sherman will even considering returning to Seattle if he doesn't draw a monster deal elsewhere. The Seahawks are also open to trading Earl Thomas, but the price tag is reportedly quite high.

Sherman met with the franchise he's played his entire career with earlier today, and afterward his mom made a social media post that seemed to indicate he'll indeed be released.

It will be interesting to see what kind of offer Sherman garners on the open market given that he tore his Achilles this past season after playing just nine games. Working in his favor is the fact that the surgery was successful, and he's expected to return to the field in June, long before the start of the 2018 season.
