The Seattle Seahawks might need a contingency plan if they plan on improving their pass rush in 2020. While the Seahawks still hope to re-sign Jadeveon Clowney, his salary demands and their cap limitations make a reunion seem unlikely.

However, the Seahawks are showing interest in former Minnesota Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen after Griffen returned he would not return to the Vikings this year (via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk):

Free agent defensive end Everson Griffen confirmed that he will not return to the Vikings, but there’s been no news about where he will go. Seattle could be an option.

As noted by the Tacoma News Tribune, Griffen played for Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll at USC, and Carroll has identified improving the pass rush as his top offseason priority. The Seahawks are still interested in re-signing free agent Jadeveon Clowney, but if Clowney goes elsewhere, Griffen would make sense for the Seahawks.

Griffen was named to the Pro Bowl for the fourth time in his career in 2019 after he posted 8.0 sacks, 24 quarterback hits and a pair of forced fumbles to go along with an interception.

Much like Clowney, Griffen can get out and set the edge or drop into coverage, if necessary. He is the kind of multi-dimensional player the Seahawks could use on the front four. Griffen also figures to be less costly than Clowney, given he will be 33 in December.

Seattle ranked 18th in defense-adjusted value over average, per Football Outsiders. Signing Griffen would give them a suitable replacement for Clowney capable of making plays all over the field.
