With Serena Williams bowing out, she joins Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal on the U.S. Open sidelines. Federer and Nadal are also dealing with injuries, with Federer's career potentially in jeopardy and Nadal's 2021 season finished.

Williams hasn't played since injuring her right leg in her first-round match at Wimbledon, which forced her to withdraw from that event.  The 39-year-old seemingly wants to return and keep playing, but she's just not ready to do so yet.

The legendary American has won six U.S. Open singles titles in her illustrious career. She has 23 Grand Slam singles titles, which is a record in the professional era. Margaret Court owns the all-time record with 24.

Serena Williams would surely love the chance to at least tie that record, and perhaps even break it. She did reach the semifinals of the Australian Open earlier in 2021 before losing to Naomi Osaka. Williams' last Grand Slam title came in 2017 at the Australian Open. She last won the U.S. Open in 2014 and reached the final there in 2018 and 2019.

Let's hope we see Serena back out on the court soon.
