Just recently, a PSA 8 2000 Panini Playoff Contenders Championship Ticket Tom Brady Auto rookie card was sold off for $1.32 million. This sale made it the most expensive football card in history. While that’s all good for the card industry, a potential disaster is looming beyond the horizon because of the Tom Brady card in question.
Cardporn, in a post on Facebook, examined the BGS serial number of the card sold by PWCC. It was compared to another BGS 8 graded card that was put up for sale on eBay by Probstein123 a few weeks ago for $2.5 million. The kicker here is that both graded cards shared the same serial number on their respective labels but their signatures look different.
One can argue that the graded Tom Brady rookie card went from Probstein123 to the ownership of PWCC, which would explain the similar serial number. But looking at the signature on the card raises some serious doubt on the authenticity of one of these items.
As of this writing, both PWCC and Probstein123 have not released any statement explaining this fishy situation. It’s also not yet known if the graded Brady rookie card from the latter has been indeed sold at its $2.5 million price tag or not.
If either one of these cards is proven to be fake and a huge amount of money was spent to obtain it, it would be a big problem for the card industry. Grading companies will also be affected if this allegation becomes true. The waiting game is now on for any clue that will bring light to this incident.
