More often than not, teams only go as far as their franchise player takes them.

In the case of the Sacramento Kings and its star, DeMarcus Cousins, the belief holds true as they still have to get a taste of success during the burly center’s reign.

Cousins’ numbers have never been the problem. In fact, these stats have helped him be recognized as one of the best centers in the league, and he’s not showing signs of slowing down.

But outside of the boxscore lies a bigger concern, and TNT analyst Shaquille O’Neal, who’s also a minority owner of the Kings, spoke his mind on what Sacramento could do regarding their prized center.

“It’s been 10 years (since the Kings reached the playoffs). It’s been a long time. They’re still a long time away.”

“In the past, previous years, he’s made a lot of mistakes. He’s been hotheaded. He hasn’t shown great leadership qualities yet. He’s one of the best centers in the league right here, this cat can do it all. … But … he’s a hothead. So if they want to make a run he’s going to have to be a leader.”

“He hasn’t shown me those leadership qualities yet. And that’s why I’m hearing talk of if things don’t start to become correct, they may be looking to go in a different direction.”

The Kings have never won more than 33 games in the past six seasons. Now, in Cousins’ seventh year, the team remains to be in limbo. To be fair, there has been serious turmoils within the team over the past few years and Cousins have shown progress as far as his maturity goes.

If there’s one thing DeMarcus Cousins can control, it’s his own self. Other than that, the Sacramento Kings’ ownership group have a different mindset altogether.
