Philadelphia 76ers head coach Doc Rivers has come out with a strong statement addressing the shooting of Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota on Sunday. The Sixers coach had a few things to say following the alleged accidental shooting of a 20-year-old African American man at the hands of the police.

Rivers spoke from the heart as he discussed the “cancel culture” that has become so prominent in today's society (h/t Mark Medina of USA Today):

Rivers is not pointing fingers in his message here. He's taking more of a big-picture approach as he tries to determine the underlying issues that lead to incidents such as that of Wright's tragic shooting.

According to reports, Brooklyn Center Police officers flagged Wright on a routine traffic stop. The victim attempted to flee the scene as he was being accosted (he allegedly had an outstanding warrant), and this was when an officer accidentally shot Wright with her firearm. Apparently, the officer was reaching for her taser, but inadvertently pulled out her gun instead. The officer's bodycam footage has been made public by the Brooklyn Center Police force and the images are quite graphic.

For their part, the Minnesota Timberwolves decided to postpone their Monday night contest against the Brooklyn Nets in light of the tragic shooting. The Minnesota Twins had also announced previously that they were not going to play on Monday, and the Wolves decided to follow suit.

Doc Rivers and his Sixers are in action on Monday against the Dallas Mavericks.
