Philadelphia 76ers point guard Markelle Fultz has been one of the strangest enigmas we have ever seen in the NBA, missing most of the season with an odd shoulder injury that no one could seem to pinpoint, and now dealing with more issues.
Well, former NBA point guard Ben Uzoh seemed to know exactly what was wrong with Fultz before any of us did.
“It looked to me like Markelle had the injury when I saw him play during a summer league game,” Uzoh told Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated.
The ailment to which Uzoh is referring is thoracic outlet syndrome, which Fultz was diagnosed with back on Dec. 4. Fultz has not played since Nov. 21, and in the 19 games in which he has played, he has not looked impressive, averaging 8.2 points while shooting 41.9 percent from the floor, 28.6 percent from 3-point range and a miserable 56.8 percent from the free-throw line.
“When I first heard he was diagnosed with it, I had a lot of people reach out to me and say, ‘Is this the same thing you had and were dealing with?’ I was like, ‘Yep,’ ” added Uzoh.
Uzoh, who last played in an NBA regular-season game with the Toronto Raptors back in 2011-12, also said that he wants to meet with Fultz to give him some encouragement.
“I need to see him,” he said. “I was relieved for him. It brought peace and closure to me when I learned about it, as well as I hope it did for him. I’m sure he saw a lot of people just like I had to.”
Markelle Fultz is expected to miss a few more weeks to undergo rehabilitation on his right shoulder.
The 20-year-old was selected by the 76ers with the first overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft after a trade with the Boston Celtics.
