Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid is gracing the cover of the Philadelphia Magazine’s December issue. Embiid making the cover of the said magazine is a testament to his popularity in the city.

It’s been a while since Philadelphia had a transcendent basketball player, whose fame goes beyond the realm of the sport just like what Joel Embiid is now.

Along with rookie Ben Simmons, Embiid has been helping the Sixers make loud noises in the NBA, as they are now 11-8 to start the season. His witty quips on social media and bubbly personality have made him a crowd favorite in the city. Those are aside of course from his basketball exploits.

So far this season, Joel Embiid is averaging 22.8 points, 11.2 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game. He is also shooting 49.8 percent from the field. He’s basically doing whatever the Sixers are asking him to.

Needless to say, Embiid is the gift that keeps on giving for the city of Philadelphia, which is having quite an entertaining year in sports. Not only are the Sixers on the rise, the Philadelphia Eagles are also creaming the rest of the NFL with a 10-1 record, and are now among the favorites to win the Super Bowl.

It would have been cooler to see Embiid and Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz on the cover of Philadelphia Magazine, but the editors probably didn’t want to risk jinxing Philly’s bid to win it all in February. Hopefully, there’s no such thing as a Philadelphia Magazine curse, as the Sixers don’t want Embiid getting hurt again.
