Sixers MVP candidate Joel Embiid is having a tremendous season as his team currently sits atop the Eastern Conference. But, it was so close to being all done on one night in Washington DC.

Embiid recently spoke out on what went through his mind when he landed awkwardly on his left leg on March 12th after throwing down a slam dunk. Ultimately, Embiid's knee hyperextended, and to be frank, it didn't look good.

“As soon as I fell, the first thing that I'm thinking is: ‘My season is over,'” Embiid said, via ESPN's Ramona Shelburne. “There's no championship. There's no more MVP. There's no more Defensive Player of the Year.”

Thankfully, it ended up being just a knee bruise and the Sixers star only missed 10 games. But, at the moment, all of those past injuries flew through Embiid's mind.

“I was like, “Why does it always have to happen to me?'” Embiid recalled. “I get so close every single time. Something always has to happen.”

Despite his cloudy past with health issues, the former Kansas standout dodged a serious bullet. He was only out for about three weeks and has continued to play at a high level since returning to the Philly lineup.

Embiid is averaging an impressive 29.2 points and 10.7 rebounds per night in 2020/21 and is regularly in the MVP conversation. Although Nikola Jokic is leading the race currently, Embiid's dominance has helped the Sixers to the East's best record.

With a new coach at the helm and a solid core around him, Embiid will be looking to lead Philadelphia to the promised land in the 2021 playoffs.
