The Sacramento Kings are an incredibly young team, and like most young teams, they are not good defensively.

The particular lineup that finished the third quarter in their game against the Philadelphia 76ers had third-year center Willie Cauley-Stein as the “veteran” among the group. Frank Mason and Justin Jackson are mere rookies, while Buddy Hield and Malachi Richardson are both in their second year. It was that unit that fell asleep and basically gifted the Sixers three points.

With the Sixers slowly bringing the ball up the court, Richardson made a huge brain fart by casually wandering off and completely leaving Jerryd Bayless wide open, which allowed the veteran to step right into an uncontested 3-pointer.

That 3-pointer crucially stretched a four-point Sixers lead to seven heading into the fourth quarter. Thankfully for Richardson, though, his boneheaded error didn’t go on to cost the Kings, who went on a 13-0 run early in the fourth and eventually outscored the Sixers 30-17 in the quarter to get the 101-95 win in Philly.

With all the youngsters the Kings have on their roster, they are bound to see a lot more of those silly, inexperienced mistakes throughout the next year or two. Hopefully for them, those painful moments are all worth it down the road and they result in their youngsters maturing into more capable NBA players.
