The Philadelphia 76ers have inquired about New York Knicks small forward Wesley Matthews, according to Sixers insider Jon Johnson.

Acquiring Matthews via a trade would be difficult for the Sixers, though. Luckily for them, Matthews and the Knicks are widely expected to reach a buyout agreement after the trade deadline passes. If that happens, Philly would try and sign the veteran swingman as a free agent.

The Knicks acquired Wesley Matthews from the Dallas Mavericks in the Kristaps Porzingis trade. The 32-year-old is making $18,622,513 this season and will become an unrestricted free agent in the summer. New York is rebuilding and doesn't need the services of Matthews, so it makes sense for the two sides to part ways.

In 46 games this season, Matthews is averaging 12.8 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per contest while shooting 40.6 percent from the field, 37.4 percent from beyond the arc and 79.1 percent from the free-throw line. You can never have enough perimeter shooting and defenders in the NBA, and the Sixers are trying to stockpile on those type of players.

Philly acquired Jimmy Butler from the Minnesota Timberwolves in November and Tobias Harris from the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday. Adding Wesley Matthews to the mix would give the Sixers three elite wing defenders.
