The Philadelphia 7ers have made the decision not to pick up the third-year option on seldom-used guard Furkan Korkmaz. There were already speculations that the Sixers wouldn’t be exercising their 2019-20 option on Furkan Korkmaz as the Turkish star continues to struggle for playing time.

And as Keith Pompey of the Philly Inquirer reported, the team opted not to extend him beyond this season.

Philadelphia’s move comes on the heels of reports that Furkan Korkmaz wants to be traded, with the Turkish international emphasizing he just wants to play.

Korkmaz was the 26th overall pick of the 2016 NBA Draft. He didn’t immediately join the Sixers and spent another year in the Turkish Basketball Super League with Anadolu Efes. He bought out his contract with the Turkish team in 2017 to play for the Sixers.

However, Korkmaz’s first season with the Sixers has been far from ideal. The 21-year-old played in only 14 games for the team in the 2017-18 campaign, averaging measly numbers of 1.6 points and 0.8 rebounds.

This season, Korkmaz has only featured in five games, averaging 5.2 minutes of action. He hasn’t played more than eight minutes in a match this season.

Korkmaz remarkably scored 40 points during his 2018 summer league debut for the Sixers. Nonetheless, that wasn’t enough for coach Brett Brown to give him more playing time — especially with the likes of JJ Redick, Markelle Fultz, and rookie Landry Shamet already getting the bulk of the workload at the guard position.
