An NBA source has told Bucks County Courier Times beat reporter Tom Moore that “there is nothing to the reports” that agent Leon Rose will prevent Joel Embiid from taking part in scrimmages until the big man gets a contract extension.

Although he was only a rookie last season, Embiid was already drafted No. 3 overall in the 2014 draft by the Philadelphia 76ers, which is why he’s eligible for a rookie scale extension this summer.

After missing his first two NBA seasons due to foot injuries, Joel Embiid finally played for the first time last season, and he was outstanding. He averaged 20.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks in just 25.4 minutes per game, and looked like a lock for Rookie of the Year.

However, he played just 31 games as he was shut down following a knee injury in January, and has yet to resume basketball-related activities.

Based on Joel Embiid’s checkered injury status, it’s understandable that his agent would be eager to lock him up to an extension before he gets a chance to get injured again. When healthy, Embiid has the potential to be the Sixers' franchise player and his agent will likely want to see him get paid as such.

But given that Embiid has played just 31 games in three years, the exact amount of that contract extension could be a sticking point in negotiations between Rose and the Sixers.
