The Philadelphia 76ers reportedly signed general manager Elton Brand to a two-year extension, despite the impending arrival of Daryl Morey, Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer and Brian Windhorst of ESPN are reporting about the Sixers.

“There's a report out of Philly today, from Keith Pompey, that Elton Brand has three years left on his contract” Windhorst said. “Well, a month ago he had one year left on his contract, so I think there was a possibility Elton Brand got a contract extension that they didn't announce.”

Originally given over view of personnel decisions in September of 2018, following his stint with organization as the head of player development, the rumored hiring of Morey as the head of basketball decisions–which is expected to be formally announced this weekend by the Sixers–was largely thought to mean that Brand's tenure with the organization would be coming to an end.

Already controversial among the Philadelphia fanbase for the player movement that has taken place under his purview, most notably the choosing to sign Tobias Harris over Jimmy Butler, it is not yet known the type of structure the Sixers will put in place to govern the front office, though it does seem clear that Brand will report to the former Rockets general manager.

That the Sixers chose not to publicly announce the extension for Brand would seem to indicate that the former all-star forward will be taking a backseat in the decision making for the franchise, with NBA teams generally only announcing such contract moves with lead decision makers.

For a team already known for the awkward fit between on-court stars Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid, it seems fitting that the Sixers mirror that approach in the front office.
