The NBA world was rocked Tuesday when The Ringer published an investigative report suggesting that Philadelphia 76ers president of basketball operations Bryan Colangelo has been operating a set of fake Twitter accounts to go after Sixers players, his team’s coaches, and other front office officials around the league. Those are actions no NBA executive should be undertaking, let alone having five anonymous social media personas to do it. Colangelo has admitted to owning one of those “burner” accounts, but continues to deny involvement in the other four.

This bombshell of a report has pushed Colangelo back into a corner, but that does not also mean he’s not fighting back the allegations. In fact, he sent Yahoo Sports’ Jordan Schultz this text message.

Bryan Colangelo tells me via text: “Someone's out to get me. … This is clearly not me.” Colangelo adds that he's “hopeful to resolve this soon.”

For what it’s worth, taking denial as a course of action seems to be working for Colangelo – at least in the eyes of his colleagues with ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reporting that many other league execs are not buying The Ringer’s report.

Nevertheless, Colangelo is denying he is responsible for those tweets and many league executives seem to believe this: It is hard to fathom a GM risking his job in such a reckless manner. Many are giving him the benefit of doubt on that level alone. It just doesn’t add up.

In any case, a can of worms has been opened in Philadelphia and it does not look like this is the kind of issue that would be resolved in just a matter of days.

The Sixers have already started their own investigation of the matter.
