Nintendo first revealed the Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Remaster during the February Nintendo Direct. Then, we confirmed its release date to be on February 19, 2021. We learned a lot about the new features that the HD Remaster will have aside from its great graphics. But one of the new features will not be available for everyone, with a new type of paywall only available for Nintendo.

Skyward Sword Loftwing amiibo required for improved fast travel

One exciting aspect of HD Remasters is that there's a chance that we'll get new features in the re-release. That's exactly the case for The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Remaster. One of the most exciting changes that Nintendo revealed so far is a new and improved fast travel feature. Instead of going to specific points in the game to access the fast travel feature, players can now tap the new Zelda & Loftwing amiibo figure on their Switch to instantly bring them to the overworld map anywhere they are. However, it looks like those without the amiibo won't be able to access this feature. Fans cry foul on this paywalled feature. Not only does it require players to own a collectible figure to access an in-game feature, but the amiibo itself is also quickly selling out.

Gamers tend to be apprehensive already of features locked behind DLCs and other forms of microtransactions. This new practice by Nintendo's an evolution of that – requiring a collectible figure to access features in a game. It's not unusual for Legend of Zelda games to launch with new amiibo figures for their game. However, this will be the first time that an amiibo will give players access to a feature not available for anyone else.

We do hope that this is just an oversight by the developers of Skyward Sword. Nintendo shouldn't make this a practice for their future games moving forward.
