Great news for Scottish Premiership fans in the United States, with ESPN recently announcing that they have just acquired the rights to the top-flight soccer league in Scotland. Coverage will be available on the ESPN+ streaming subscription service.

ESPN+ has acquired the U.S. media rights in both English and Spanish to the Scottish Premiership, the top professional soccer league in Scotland. As part of the agreement, the direct-to-consumer sports streaming service will carry at least one Scottish Premiership match per week, beginning October 17, and will also have coverage of select matches from the Scottish Championship, Betfred Cup (Scottish League Cup) and Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Cup (Scottish Challenge Cup).
To make things even more interesting, ESPN+'s coverage will open with quite a bang, as they debut with the fiercest rivalry in all of Scotland with Celtic F.C. hosting arch-nemesis Rangers F.C. on Saturday, October 17. Celtic will be playing host to their bitter rivals, with the match set to kick off at 7:30 a.m. ET.
For U.S. soccer fans that are not too familiar with the Scottish Premier League, this new development presents a new opportunity to open one's horizon to a unique type of European football. The level at which the SPL plays at may not be as high as that of other top European domestic leagues such as the English Premier League of the Spanish La Liga, but there's no denying that the intensity and passion on the Scottish Premier League come second to none.
