Sony officially announced that the PlayStation 5 shipped 4.5 million units in 2020 alone. This figure matches the sales record of the console's predecessor, the PlayStation 4 which launched in 2013. It's a substantial record for the blue side of the console wars but it's not entirely indicative of the prevalent stock shortage problem for the new console. Regardless, the strong sales numbers suggest that the PS5 remains a strong contender in the console wars.

Beyond the Shortages

The Ps5 sales number is impressive but only if you overlook several issues plaguing its launch. Rampant scalping continues to deprive Sony fans of getting their hands on their own console. It's been a hotly contested issue since the PS5's November 2020 launch. Sony attempted to curb the stock shortages by producing more units but a larger number of players remain console-less.

Sony celebrates their strong numbers but they should be looking towards safeguarding their consoles from unruly people. Hopefully, the big console developer moves to address this troubling issue. Fans deserve to experience and enjoy the best of the next generation of home consoles. If Sony doesn't act, the only hope left for players is for scalpers to become incapable of absorbing the massive supply of PS5 units.

Sony hopes to sell 7.6 million units by 2021. The record is bolstered by the combined 103.7 million sales record for both PS5 and PS4 games. First-party games account for 18.4 million of those sales. Undoubtedly, Sony has no trouble developing and pushing their amazing games.

It's still the very early stages of the Ninth generation of home consoles. There's a lot of room for improvement for all involved parties. Sony, in particular, needs to get its act together to help its countless ailing fans get their hands on the hardware they need.  Hopefully, Sony creates more amazing exclusive content for their current console.
