Spec Ops: The Line, a classic third-person shooter, has not found a sequel since its release in 2012. It's intriguing how a critically acclaimed and commercially successful game like that has not yet received a follow-up. Actually, it's a mystery why Specs Ops hasn't had a release since then, considering that The Line was supposed to reboot the franchise.

In February 2020, Tencent invested in Yager, becoming a minority owner of the studio. Yager says that the investment will help support their current and future titles. Now, in June 2021, Kotaku reports, Tencent invested even more, just enough to make them a majority owner of the studio. The investment is interesting at the very least, given that Yager's recent titles The Cycle and Dreadnought did not make waves in the video gaming industry.

Still, this could be seen as a ray of hope for Spec Ops: The Line fans. While Yager doesn't own the rights for the series – as 2K publishes all Spec Ops games, this investment may still lead to more Spec Ops games down the line. Could we see a remake of Spec Ops: The Line soon? Will there be a sequel in the works? Will the game or the series head to mobile? As of now, nobody knows.

At the very least, Tencent's investment will help keep the Berlin-based studio afloat. With the 2020 coronavirus pandemic affecting the studio's business, the cash infusion will help the studio expand again and resume its operations back to normal. At least, they could probably re-hire now the staff that they laid off last year.
