Ubisoft has just confirmed that a Splinter Cell remake is indeed in development at Ubisoft Toronto.

There have been multiple conflicting Splinter Cell rumors over the past few months. Some pointed to a new mainline game, while others thought it will be a spin-off. However, the truth is that Ubisoft is instead remaking the first Splinter Cell game.

We haven't seen a new Splinter Cell game since 2013. That was Splinter Cell: Blacklist on the PC, PS3, Wii U, and Xbox 360. It's odd that Ubisoft has not revisited the game for such a long time considering how successful the series has been. Blacklist itself was no disappointment and was well received by critics. However, the game sold poorly, only selling 2 million copies instead of the expected 5 million.

Just like the original, the Splinter Cell remake will be featuring linear single-player gameplay. Unlike other games, Ubisoft doesn't feel any need to reinvent the game. It was even explicitly stated that the remake will not be an open-world game, so at least fans have that to expect. In a world full of bland open-world games, though we're actually very glad that this one will stick to its roots and go with what it has proven to work before.

The Splinter Cell remake doesn't have a release date yet. Development is still in its very early phase, and Ubisoft Toronto is still currently filling up some positions for the game's development.
