The NBA Development League announced this week that it will be experimenting with extra referees on the floor. The normal three-man officiating crew will be extended to four and five man crews for nine games starting December 26.

While the league is looking to bring improvement to its officiating system, some aren't happy with this method.

Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra feels less is more and explains to reporters why he's against the trial run.

“I'm a little more of the school of thought: the more people that are out there, the less accountability there is.”

“It seems like now, more and more, that it's somebody else's call or somebody else's eyes that are supposed to be on that, and it's a lot more gray area. It's very confusing to all of us. It must be incredibly stressful and confusing for the officials.”

In what seems like a too many chiefs scenario, the first games will feature two lead officials along with two regular referees. It is certainly an uncharted territory and the league is hoping to get more calls correct with more hands to the plow.

An old adage says two heads are better than one, but that doesn't apply in every case. Spoelstra doesn't feel this is what the NBA needs, and would rather have quality over quantity.

“I think you add one more, much less two more, to the mix, it'll become even more confusing, in my opinion. And there's more bodies on the court. We need more court space and less bodies.”

The league needs to find ways to improve the game, and having a better officiating system should be at the top of the list. Only time will tell if this is a permanent solution or one that should be scrapped for good.
