Pitchers are going to have quite a bit of trouble getting through four of the best hitters in the league in succession to kick games off, and it’s not as if the rest of their lineup is bad either. On paper, this is one of the most fearsome lineups in the entire MLB, and it will be worth tuning into their upcoming outing to see how much havoc they are able to wreak.</p><p>Of course, it’s not set in stone that this lineup will immediately take the league by storm. As previously mentioned, Tatis will be missing time as he finishes serving his suspension, and after getting traded from the Washington Nationals, Juan Soto’s initial numbers with the Padres were fairly disappointing. It will take awhile for these guys to learn how to play alongside each other.</p><p>That doesn’t mean they won’t strike fear into the hearts of their opponents, and today is the first time we will get to see all of these guys in action together. While the game itself means nothing considering it’s just a Spring Training contest, this lineup could result in some must-see baseball, and it will be worth tuning in to get a glimpse of what they are capable of producing.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The injury placed his World Baseball Classic status in jeopardy, but Soto was ultimately cleared to play for <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/team-dominican-republic-roster-for-2023-world-baseball-classic" rel="noopener">Team Dominican Republic</a>. Soto is in the lineup for Monday’s game versus Nicaragua, however, <a href="https://twitter.com/BNightengale/status/1635309967770292227" rel="noopener">he is still facing restrictions</a>, per Bob Nightengale.</p><p>“San Diego #Padres star Juan Soto is in today’s Dominican Republic lineup, but can not start in back-to-back games, manager Rodney Linares says, because of restrictions by the Padres. He had left calf tightness his final few days in spring training camp, so Padres being cautious,” Nightengale wrote on Twitter.</p><p>Juan Soto is one of the best players on the team, but his inability to play in back-to-back games could prove to be a major detriment for Team Dominican Republic.</p><p>Soto appears to be recovering well from the calf ailment. The 24-year old led off the Dominican Republic’s Monday game with a single and now has three hits in the World Baseball Classic. He’s always been a pure hitter, but struggled with the bat at times last year. Soto maintained a strong OBP all season long but never quite found his footing at the plate. Perhaps he will return to his prior MVP-caliber level of play in 2023.</p><p>The Padres are counting on Juan Soto to play a pivotal role for them. San Diego is looking to compete with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the NL West division title. He is on a short-term deal only, so the Padres’ front office knows they need to move quickly and add the supplementary pieces that would propel them to World Series consideration. Xander Bogaerts, Nelson Cruz, and Seth Lugo were some players signed in the offseason who played a vital role this season.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cubs-eric-hosmer-drops-strong-take-on-padres-star-manny-machados-baseball-hall-of-fame-odds" rel="noopener">Manny Machado and</a> Yu Darvish will continue propelling San Diego as the leaders in the batting and pitching departments, respectively. Even with their NLCS appearance last year, the more important news is welcoming stud Fernando Tatis Jr. back to the fold sometime in the middle of the season. The surplus of shortstops will likely mean he will play in an outfield position, but that remains to be seen.</p><p>Without Tatis Jr., a few injuries, and position openings, these are some position battles to watch out for in Spring Training.</p><h2><b>Right field</b></h2><p>Juan Soto was the primary starter at the right field when he was added last season. It still has not been decided if Soto will play left or right field, but it will be better for him if he is only assigned one position. When Tatis Jr. returns, he can be a terrific option in the right field, so putting Soto in left for the start of the year is ideal. Now, it opens up a starting slot at right field for the early juncture of the season.</p><p>Free-agent signing Adam Engel is still rehabbing a calf injury, so he might not be healthy enough to start. Jurickson Profar has left the Padres, so their choices are down to Jose Azocar and David Dahl. Both individuals did not have terrific 2022 performances, but their Spring Training has been respectable. Another option that can be considered is Brandon Dixon.</p><p>The position battle at the right field will come down to the final moments of Spring Training, and it will be interesting to see who will have the head start. Padres fans might wonder why Nelson Cruz is not being considered but gone are the days when he would play in the field, as he is now a full-time DH.</p><h2><b>Pitching</b></h2><p>The desired outcome and numbers by the San Diego pitchers are still far from their goals. Sure, they have Yu Darvish, Blake Snell, and Josh Hader, but it is a question mark already after that. Joe Musgrove will likely miss the early juncture of 2023 because of a toe injury, so they must fill in his spot as the third starter. Furthermore, their starting rotation still needs to be set after the trio of Darvish, Snell, and Musgrove.</p><p>An ideal projection would be slotting Michael Wacha at No. 4 and Nick Martinez at No.5., but it means that Adrian Morejon and Seth Lugo will not receive consistent starts with the Padres. Even with a stacked pitching staff, they can decide to rotate six guys as starters, so that it will be an interesting decision for manager Bob Melvin.</p><p>Josh Hader will still be the closer with their bullpen, but his performance is subpar compared to his dominant self. It might have been a slow adjustment period for him, but he will bounce back in 2023. Robert Suarez, Luis Garcia, and Steven Wilson will be fantastic options from the ‘pen, but it seems bleak. The competition is stiff with their other relievers as they have minor league competition, such as Michael Baez or Jose Castillo. </p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Currently, it looks like Kris Bryant, Yonathan Daza and 36-year-old Charlie Blackmon.</p><p>Younger options like Nolan Jones and Brenton Doyle could be a fit, but clearly, Jurickson Profar would be a great get for the Rockies.</p><p>“A deal with Profar <a href="https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/03/rockies-rumors-jurickson-profar-interest.html" rel="noopener">makes some sense,</a>” wrote Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors. “He’s typically been deployed as a left fielder in recent seasons, which could push Bryant over to right field, where he perhaps uncoincidentally has been seeing increased time this spring after spending all of his time in left field last year.”</p><p>Profar has combined for a solid .244/.333/.375 batting line with just a 15.4 percent strikeout rate over the last three seasons; he has a keen eye at the plate and has strong bat-to-ball skills, per Adams.</p><p>He’s continuing to improve as an outfielder, which is a relatively new position for him, but could start at left field for the Rockies and move Bryant to right.</p><p>If the money is right, it certainly seems like Profar could be an excellent fit with the Rockies. Colorado projects around a <a href="https://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource/payroll/rockies" rel="noopener">$163 million payroll next season</a>, according to Roster Resource, a franchise record for the organization.</p><p>Profar declined a $7.5 million player option with the Padres following last season, with reports surfacing that he could be looking for as high as $10 million per season. If the Rockies do legitimately pursue Profar, they likely will be surpassing the currently projected record payroll, so it’s something to keep an eye on.</p><p>But first, current Padre Jurickson Profar will continue to represent the Netherlands in the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/world-baseball-classic-news-shohei-ohtani-does-it-all-in-japans-win-over-china" rel="noopener">World Baseball Classic</a>.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Nonetheless, Melvin isn’t worried, and why should he be? Tatis is set to play in a back-to-back for the first time since returning, so it’ll be interesting to see how he fares.</p><p>Tatis is one of the most electric players in the entire MLB, and he missed the whole 2022 season, so rust is expected for a lay-off of that length. In 2021, Tatis played in 130 games, hitting 42 home runs with 97 RBIs and a .282 batting average while being named an All-Star.</p><p>This year, his numbers can grow even more, especially with Juan Soto, Xander Bogaerts, and Manny Machado around him in the lineup, not to mention Jake Cronenworth and veteran slugger Nelson Cruz.</p><p>Tatis has games left to serve on his suspension, but whenever he returns to the field in the regular season, we will finally see the loaded Padres lineup. While Yankees fans feared the Giants as more of a threat to swipe The Judge away in free agency, the latest MLB rumors suggest that the Padres were the bigger adversary.</p><p>The Padres reportedly <a href="https://theathletic.com/4281318/2023/03/09/aaron-judge-yankees-contract-agent/" rel="noopener">offered</a> Judge a contract “in the range” of $415 million, with a guarantee that was nearly $100 million higher than the offer made by the Yankees, sources told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.</p><p>Aaron Judge himself said that the Padres’ offer “blew everyone else out of the water”, per Rosenthal.</p><p>It had been reported that the Padres were contemplating an offer in this range, but the fact that they actually offered it to Judge shows just how serious they were about the 2022 American League MVP, who broke the single-season league record for home runs.</p><p>Rosenthal adds that several members of the Padres brass who attended the meeting with Judge felt he was going to leave the Yankees.</p><p>Of course, things didn’t play out that way, as Judge returned to the Bronx, thanks in part to a late push from <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yankees-news-aaron-judge-drops-attention-catching-anthony-volpe-take" rel="noopener">Yankees</a> owner Hal Steinbrenner.</p><p>But if it wasn’t clear by now, it should be absolutely paramount that Padres general manager AJ Preller, who pulled off a trade deadline heist last summer, is going to do literally whatever it takes to win.</p><p>Even though the Padres didn’t land Judge, this aggressive approach should leave them among the MLB’s elite when it comes to convincing top-tier free agents to relocate to San Diego.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

So that’s a big loss.”</p><p>Walker Buehler had previously emerged as one of the best pitchers in baseball. Injuries have unfortunately impacted Buehler over the past few years, as this is his second time undergoing Tommy John surgery. Los Angeles would love for him to return in time for a playoff run in 2023, but there is no guarantee of that happening.</p><p>Reynolds believe his loss gives the Padres an even better chance of stealing the division away from the Dodgers in 2023. However, Reynolds still believes that the Dodgers are talented.</p><p>The NL West is destined to be far more competitive than last year, when the Dodgers won the division by a landslide. The Dodgers’ right-hander spun three innings of scoreless baseball, striking out two in the process. He also didn’t allow a hit or a walk in the effort. Dustin May followed Syndergaard with three scoreless innings of his own, striking out three while allowing just one hit and one walk.</p><p>Syndergaard and May will be pivotal for the Dodgers in 2023 in the back end of the rotation. The other Padres players on the Dominican Republic team recently left for Florida, but Soto is remaining in Padres’ camp <a href="https://twitter.com/sdutKevinAcee/status/1632762429544464391" rel="noopener">to receive treatment</a> for <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/padres-news-juan-soto-still-dealing-with-calf-injury" rel="noopener">his calf injury</a>, per Kevin Acee. However, Soto is still expected to participate in the WBC, which is crucial since the Dominican team <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/blue-jays-news-vladimir-guerrero-jr-to-miss-wbc-with-knee-injury" rel="noopener">already lost Vladimir Guerrero Jr.</a> due to injury.</p><p>Soto has performed well in Spring Training when on the field, but the calf ailment has <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/padres-news-juan-soto-scratched-with-injury-vs-dodgers" rel="noopener">forced him to miss some time</a> as well. The injury doesn’t seem to be serious, however, it’s something worth keeping tabs on moving forward. The reality of the situation is that San Diego wouldn’t allow Juan Soto to play in the WBC if the injury was a major issue.</p><p>Team Dominican Republic is arguably the biggest threat to the US ball club. They feature no shortage of talent and will have a strong chance of reaching the championship. Their pitching depth is impressive and the lineup has plenty of star power. It goes without saying, but the absence of Guerrero Jr. is far from ideal. Losing Juan Soto would have made things even more problematic.</p><p>For now, barring a setback, Soto is still expected to play for the Dominican team. But there’s still a minor chance that the Padres decide to rule Soto out for the tournament if the injury doesn’t progress over the next few days.</p><p>We will continue to monitor Juan Soto’s status ahead of the World Baseball Classic.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

There are other stars who are far from locks for the Baseball Hall of Fame but have put together formidable seasons as of late, such as San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado.</p><p>From Chicago Cubs slugger Eric Hosmer’s standpoint, he <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2023/03/05/mlb-rule-changes-pitch-clock-tweaks/11400925002/" rel="noopener">believes</a> that Machado is on the right track to becoming a Hall of Famer.</p><p>“He’s solidified himself as one of the top five players in the game, who’s on a Hall of Fame track,” Hosmer told USA Today Sports’ Bob Nightengale.</p><p>Machado orchestrated one of the most productive seasons of his career in the 2022 campaign, which Hosmer had a front-row seat to watch the first half of. The six-time All-Star logged 32 home runs and 102 RBI en route to finishing in second place in the voting for the 2022 National League MVP Award.</p><p>Machado’s keen play in the 2022 season helped him earn an 11-year, $350 million extension deal from the Padres, which the two sides came to terms on last month. The $31.8 million average annual value on Machado’s deal currently ranks in the top 10 in all of baseball.</p><p>“He’s doing everything the right way,” Hosmer said. “You hear about guys who get the big contract, and maybe change their ways, but Manny was doing that after he got that first big contract [10 years, $300 million].</p><p>“He’s earned every piece of that, big time.”</p><p>Even with the plethora of All-Star talents across the San Diego roster, Hosmer sees that the veteran third baseman has established himself as the face of the Padres franchise.</p><p>“That’s what’s cool now,” Hosmer said. “You go to certain places, like when you went to St. Louis, you were going to Yadi’s [Molina] town. You go to Kansas City, and you were going to Salvy’s [Salvador Perez] town.</p><p>“Now, you go to San Diego, you’re pretty much going to the house that Manny built.”</p><p>The Padres will kick off their 2023 regular season campaign with a combined six straight home matchups against the Colorado Rockies and the Arizona Diamondbacks.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
