They have plenty of qualified pitchers for the gig and Aaron Boone revealed that Clay Holmes is expected to be their primary 9th inning option. With that being said, Boone <a href="https://sny.tv/articles/clay-holmes-yankees-closer-let-s-ask-the-manager" rel="noopener">added that other relievers</a> may also see save opportunities, per SNY’s Andy Martino.</p><p>“I would expect [Clay Holmes] to close a lot of games for us,” Boone said. “Probably most games, and hopefully a lot of games. But I do see a number of guys getting saves.”</p><p>Boone shared an example of why a pitcher other than Clay Holmes might be called upon to work in the 9th inning.</p><p>“There are going to be days where if it’s [George] Springer, [Bo] Bichette and Vladdy [Vladimir Guerrero Jr.] coming up in the eighth inning in a big spot, that might be Clay.”</p><p>Clay Holmes is one of the better relievers in baseball. Boone doesn’t want to restrict him to the 9th inning if the best hitters for an opposing team, as exemplified by the Toronto Blue Jays in Boone’s quote, are due up in the 7th or 8th inning. Nevertheless, Holmes is the expected closer for this Yankees’ ball club.</p><p>New York’s offense will be <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yankees-news-new-york-is-aaron-judges-team-as-captain-aaron-boone-says" rel="noopener">led by Aaron Judge</a> once again and they will provide run support. The Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, and Nestor Cortes-led starting rotation will also put the Yankees in positions to win games. But he also has some work to do regarding New York’s bullpen, and there was reason to believe that the Yankees could try to find a replacement for Clay Holmes at the backend of their bullpen after his strange 2022 season.</p><p>Holmes was electric to begin the season and ended up unexpectedly finding himself in the closer role, but he struggled down the stretch and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yankees-news-i-woke-up-today-preparing-to-pitch-clay-holmes-vocal-amid-aaron-boone-sitting-him-vs-guardians" rel="noopener">lost save opportunities</a> as his struggles mounted. While some expected the Yankees to explore other closing options this offseason, Cashman sounded content with Holmes, but wouldn’t entirely rule out the possibility of adding to the bullpen this offseason.</p><p>“I feel really good about Clay Holmes being our closer, but that doesn’t preclude us from entertaining any outside players via trade or free agency if it makes us better.” Brian Cashman, <a href="https://sports.yahoo.com/yankees-free-agency-trade-buzz-160004322.html?fr=sycsrp_catchall" rel="noopener">Yahoo Sports</a></p><p>This quick comment from Cashman should make Holmes feel a bit better, but it still doesn’t take the Yankees out of the market for more relievers. New York’s bullpen struggled in the second half of the season, and while some of that was due to key arms getting injured, that doesn’t mean they should ignore the position entirely this offseason.</p><p>For now, it seems like Holmes is set to remain the Yankees closer heading into the 2022 season. And while that may be true, Cashman isn’t going to ignore a better option if it comes across the table. They blew a multi-run lead in the ninth inning, marking <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yankees-news-aaron-judge-new-york-enter-franchise-infamy-with-streak-snapping-loss-vs-guardians/">one of the worst postseason losses ever for the franchise</a>. Fans will be looking at manager Aaron Boone as a key reason for the loss due to his decision not to use Clay Holmes in the ninth inning.</p><p>Holmes, who appeared in 1.1 innings over the first two games of the series and allowed just one walk and one HBP, was dealing with soreness but said he was <a href="https://twitter.com/snyyankees/status/1581490866526494720?s=20&amp;t=vrRwLeN5q5R0wIh9WUaD7Q">ready to go</a> if the Yankees needed him. Despite picking up an important win against the Blue Jays on Sunday, the Yankees are now set to lose another key player to the IL. <a href="https://twitter.com/lindseyadler/status/1561809477334175744?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1561809477334175744%7Ctwgr%5E01fd426119a23b6819e36b802f1d6b12ee0eeda3%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fclutchpoints.com%2Fwp-admin%2Fpost-new.php">According to Lindsey Adler of The Athletic</a>, Scott Effross is set to land on the 15-day IL after sustaining a shoulder strain. Aaron Boone provided a big update on closer Clay Holmes, indicating the All-Star reliever should be ready to return from the Injured List after a minimum 15-day stay. Holmes could be in line to return to action at the start of September, and hopefully the IL stint was all he needed to reset his mind and get back to the form he displayed during the first half of the year.</p><p>The Yankees acquired Effross at the trade deadline in a deal with the Chicago Cubs. Since donning the pinstripes, Effross has logged a 3.24 ERA across eight appearances. He’s struck out eight batters in 8.1 innings and picked up one save.</p><p>While it’s certainly a tough pill to swallow to see Effross land on the IL, the Holmes update suggests that the Yankees’ bullpen won’t be without its key members for too long during the crucial stretch.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Amid the bullpen shakeup, Aaron Boone revealed the Yankees’ plans for the ninth inning, informing reporters that the team plans to roll with a combination of Aroldis Chapman and Scott Effross in a closer by committee type of setup, <a href="https://twitter.com/M_Marakovits/status/1559988898050326529">via Meredith Marakovits</a>.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">Boone said they will continue to determine closer based on matchup/who’s available. The Yankees’ closer was baseball’s best relief pitcher throughout the first few months of the season, but his production has dropped off a cliff in recent weeks.</p><p>Holmes surrendered two earned runs throughout the first three full months of the regular season. During that span, the right-hander threw 36.2 innings with 38 strikeouts and just five walks. Since July, Holmes has not been the same. The 29-year-old has surrendered 11 earned runs in his last 12.1 innings of work. With him not looking right for upwards of a month, the IL stint could be exactly what he needs to correct his mistakes.</p><p>Fortunately for the Yankees, Chapman has managed to rediscover the form that looked lost on him earlier in the year. The flame-throwing left-hander has tossed nine consecutive scoreless outings, walking just one batter and striking out 10 across 9.1 innings of work in that span.</p><p>With Marinaccio back in the fold and Holmes on the shelf, the Yankees will hope the tandem of Effross and Chapman can hold it down in high-leverage situations.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
