The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/texas-rangers">Texas Rangers</a> (40-22) will square off against the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/tampa-bay-rays">Tampa Bay Rays</a> (47-19) for the second installment of their three game series. The Rangers have dialed-in their pitching staff and sport one of the hardest hitting lineups in baseball. They’ve gone 14-6 over their last 20 games and have a firm five-game lead over their in-state rival Houston Astros. They dropped the first game of this series and will try to avoid a third-straight loss. Nathan Eovaldi (RHP) will be their starter.</p><p>The Tampa Bay Rays are the best team in baseball and currently have a commanding 6.5-game lead in the AL East. They’re the leaders of baseball’s toughest division and will have to keep up their frantic pace if they want to best the Orioles and Yankees this year. They’re also winners of their last seven games and have outscored opponents by 22 runs during that stretch. They got their bats going last night and will hope for another statement win at home. The Rangers will have to dig deep and rally as a pitching staff after the loss of their ace. They’ll find comfort knowing that their lineup is the best in the league right now and can provide run support to pitchers at any point. The Rangers rank first in MLB batting average at .275 and lead the league with 374 RBI. They’re also first in hits and have had 31 quality starts out of their pitching staff, much to do with Jacob deGrom’s success. As the slightest favorite, the feeling is that their bats will wake up again in this one.</p><p>Nate Eovaldi will take the reigns as the Rangers ace and does so behind an 8-2 record. He’s had a number of quality starts and has a clean 2.24 ERA thru 80 innings of work. Eovaldi has also found the strikeout with 77 and has a great 0.93 WHIP. Against the Rays lineup, Eovaldi should see some success with his fastballs. He’s only given up three homers thus far and doesn’t plan on letting the Rays get to him in this one. The Rangers clearly have the edge on the mound and the betting lines suggest Eovaldi could be the difference-maker in this one.</p><h2><b>Why The Rays Could Cover The Spread</b></h2><p>The Rays are on a serious hot streak right now and are enjoying this upcoming stint at home. They’re 30-6 when playing at Tropicana Field this year and have gone 37-16 against RHP. They also saw the return of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rays-news-twitter-goes-nuts-realizing-tyler-glasnow-looks-exactly-like-cillian-murphy">Tyler Glasnow</a> to the mound as he got his first win in over 2 years. Isaac Paredes had a career night as he homered twice and drove in six runs. It was business as usual for the Rays as they asserted their dominance over the next-best team in the MLB. They’re a unique mix of power and speed, leading the league both in home runs and stolen bases. The Rays also rank top-five in average, hits, and RBI. If they can get their bats going again, they could extend their win streak to eight.</p><p>Taj Bradley will start with a 4-2 record and 3.60 ERA thru 35 IP. He certainly hasn’t been tight for the Rays giving up four homer and 33 hits, but he’s done enough through the first five innings of games to lift the Rays to some wins. The squad, as a whole, is seeing the ball very well as they’ve gone on to sweep their last two series. Sweeping the Rangers in this spot will be tough, but the Rays have thrived against the Rangers in recent contests.</p><h2><b>Final Rangers-Rays Prediction &amp; Pick</b></h2><p>Eight will be the magic number in this game as Nathan Eovaldi goes for his eighth-straight win, the Rays looked for their eighth-straight as a team, and the total is set at eight. The Rays have been on an impressive run and their batters are feeling extremely locked-in at the moment. Eovaldi is equally locked-in with his pitching, but the Rangers have only managed three runs over the last two games. Against Tampa Bay, those totals won’t cut it. That brings them to winners of seven of their last ten, and a 46-19 record on the season. Meanwhile, the Rangers had their five-game winning streak snapped yesterday in a 1-0 loss to the Cardinals. They have also won seven of their last ten games and sit at 40-21 on the season. The Rangers hold the best run differential in the major leagues, but their pitching staff just took a major hit, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rangers-pitchers-trade-jacob-degrom-tommy-john-surgery" rel="noopener">losing Jacob de Grom</a> for the year. Even with that, the Rangers cal rely on this quality offense. They are tops in the league in runs scored, batting average, and on-base percentage while ranking fourth in slugging. Leading the way with the hottest bat has been Marcus Semien. Semien failed to get a hit in the game yesterday, ending his hitting streak at 26 games. Still, he is batting .299 on the season with a .367 on-base percentage. In the last week, he has still been playing well as well. He has hit .333 over the last six games while driving in six runs.</p><p>Also swinging the bat well as of late in Jonah Heim. Heim, like most of the lineup, was hitless last night but is still hitting .333 this month with seven RBIs and a home run. Joining Heim with a great start to the month is Corey Seager. Seager is hitting .400 so far this month with a .444 on-base percentage. He has driven in six runs on the month, with a home run and four doubles.</p><p>On the hill today will be Andrew Heaney. Heaney has been solid this year, with a 4-3 record and 4.03 ERA. His last time out was not his best though. He only went three innings, giving up three runs, but also six hits and four walks in the game. Before that, he was on a streak of three straight games of going six or more innings while just giving up a run. He has had some issues with command this year, which has resulted in his pitch count getting high early, but if he can control that, he should be in for a solid outing.</p><h2><b>Why The Rays Could Cover The Spread</b></h2><p>Right behind the Rangers in terms of runs scored is the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays are second in the league in runs scored, and second in on-base percentage. They have a little bit more power in the lineup than the Rangers. They are tops in the league in slugging and lead the league in home runs. The power has come from all over the line up too. Five different players have over ten home runs, with three guys at nine home runs on the season. Randy Arozarena is leading the team, along with Yandy Diaz at 12 home runs each.</p><p>Arozarena is in a little bit of a slump as of late. He is hitting just .217 in June so far but does have a home run and three RBIs so far this month. Arozarena is struggling to make contact as of late. He has struck out nine times this month so far. Yandy Diaz was not in the lineup Thursday, and it is currently considered day-to-day. he has been hitting well for over a month now. Since the start of May, he is hitting .308 while driving in 18 runs in that time.</p><p>The Rays will send Tyler Glasnow to the mound today. He has made two starts so far this year. The first time out was 4.1 innings, with three runs allowed, and taking a no-decision. The next time out was 5.1 innings with just one run given up, but once again a no-decision.</p><h2><b>Final Rangers-Rays Prediction &amp; Pick</b></h2><p>This should be an amazing series to watch. The Rangers have a slightly better offense, while the Rays have slightly better pitching. Glasnow is still working himself into shape after missing the start of the season. That is not the best thing for a pitcher against this type of offense. It is highly doubtful that the Rangers’ offense misses two days in a row. A player’s greatness that just oozes through the television screen, their dominance so profound that even non-fans know of them. But in baseball there is one enemy that threatens to invalidate the eye test and the weight it carries. Longevity. The sensational Jacob deGrom is going to learn that the hard way.</p><p>Aside from a few New Yorkers who cannot resist breaking out an “I told you so,” most of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mets-twitter-reacts-to-jacob-degrom-tommy-john-surgery-update" rel="noopener">baseball world is reeling</a> following the news that the Texas Rangers pitcher and Mets great needs to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rangers-news-jacob-degrom-tommy-john-update-elbow-injury" rel="noopener">undergo Tommy John surgery</a> for the second time in his career. It is a blow to Rangers fans who felt deGrom could put their overachieving starting rotation over the top in the postseason, and anyone who just appreciates the art of pitching.</p><p>Perhaps most sickening of all, though, it is a major gut punch to his potential Cooperstown enshrinement. Supreme excellence is usually an iron-clad case, but the 34-year-old unfortunately lacks endurance in a sport that sanctifies it. The road to recovery will be made even more perilous for a pitcher who has made just 32 starts in the last three seasons combined.</p><p>deGrom will return, but the sad truth is that there is a strong likelihood more setbacks will follow. And if that happens, there will not be enough time for him to reach the necessary milestones the Baseball Writers’ Association of America so vehemently demand and defend.</p><p>Cruelly, and maybe unjustly, Jacob deGrom’s Hall of Fame chances have been all but ended.</p><h2>Why Hall of Fame is out of reach for Jacob deGrom</h2><p>Full disclosure, I believe <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rangers-news-jacob-degrom-reveals-plan-to-achieve-ultimate-goal-after-185-million-contract" rel="noopener">Jacob deGrom deserves a bust</a> in Cooperstown. I put a lot of stock into the aforementioned eye test. He dominated in a way that is almost unfathomable in this era. But what suffices for me means nothing to the writers who cast a Hall of Fame vote. deGrom does not meet their criteria.</p><p>Let’s start off by examining the crux of his case. deGrom has a sterling 2.53 career ERA, a 2.90 postseason ERA (five games), two Cy Young Awards and four All-Star selections. Those credentials are enough to leave an indelible mark on the game, especially since they have essentially all come under the pressure cooker that is New York. But they are not quite enough to be immortalized in the Hall.</p><p>At most, he has compiled six-and-a-half Hall of Fame-caliber seasons. To be clear, the <a href="https://twitter.com/SportsCenter/status/1045154093982011392" rel="noopener">best of those years</a> likened comparisons to Bob Gibson and Sandy Koufax. The 215 starts, 44.6 WAR and 1,652 strikeouts is what will keep him out. Those numbers are quite outstanding for deGrom’s sample size, but that does not matter. He is from a different generation than the writers who will decide deGrom’s fate, but attendance, and just numbers in general, mean more in this sport than any other. There are benchmarks that must be cleared. You don’t need to check them all, but the right-hander does not really meet any of them.</p><h2>Even the borderline HOFs had something that deGrom doesn’t</h2><p>Think about every controversial Hall of Fame pitcher. Some like Don Sutton and Gaylord Perry had a bevy of unspectacular seasons, but they lasted long enough to amass incredible lifetime achievements. Similarly, Mike Mussina was always overshadowed during his time and feels more like a good hurler rather than a great one, let alone elite. And yet, his 270 wins and 82.8 WAR put him in that company, according to the writers.</p><p>Believe it or not, even players like <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/guardians-news-triston-mckenzie-reveals-the-immense-impact-of-cc-sabathia-on-his-career" rel="noopener">C.C. Sabathia</a> and Zack Greinke could be afforded more leniency. They can’t really measure up to deGrom in any way, except, of course, longevity. Pitching more than twice as many games than the 2014 NL Rookie of the Year is something that will garner at least some consideration.</p><p>The beacon of hope for deGrom emanates from the bust of another man I briefly mentioned earlier. Sandy Koufax. The Dodgers icon has just a slightly better WAR and lesser ERA than the deGrominator. Injuries derailed his transcendent career as well. He still made it, though, largely due to being one of the greatest postseason pitchers of all-time (0.95 ERA). deGrom’s playoff numbers are impressive, but they will not move the needle.</p><p>And there you go. Whether it is old-school stats like wins or modern barometers like WAR, Jacob deGrom falls short. Writers will agonize and try hard to justify his candidacy, but they will go where the numbers take them. And that won’t be far.</p><p>Leaving this superb talent out of Cooperstown feels criminal, but even as much as baseball and its writers have changed, I cannot see tradition being forgone in favor of empathy.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

While they managed to cover the first game of this series, they narrowly missed the mark last night. Considering how tight these matchups have been, St. Louis stands a strong chance of covering tonight as road underdogs. That said, the Cardinals need their bats out in full force tonight matched up against one of the hottest pitchers in baseball.</p><p>Righty Jack Flaherty (3-4) makes his 13th start of the season for the Cardinals tonight. The 27-year-old has been relatively solid for St. Louis this season barring a disastrous start in early May during which he allowed 10 runs in just 2.1 innings. That blow-up caused his ratios to skyrocket – for the season he holds a 4.55 ERA and 1.52 WHIP. That said, the underlying numbers suggest Flaherty has strong. He’s done an excitant job limiting hard contact and holds a strong whiff rate. However, he’s struggled mightily with free passes – issuing 35 walks compared to 64 strikeouts.</p><p>That said, he settled down in his two most recent starts. Over his last 12.1 innings, he allowed just two runs and walked two hitters. He faces arguably his toughest test of the season tonight against the most potent offense in the league. However, the Rangers have notably hit worse against righties (.273 AVG) compared to lefties (.296 AVG) – perhaps providing an avenue to a quality start for Flaherty.</p><p>St. Louis’ offense revolves around their corner infielders with Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado serving as one of the league’s top one-two punches. However, the Cardinals have gotten a ton of production out of young slugger Nolan Gorman. Gordman finds himself in the midst of a breakout season – batting .268 while slugging out 14 homers and driving in 44 runs. His advanced metrics are eye-popping: 91st percentile xwOBA, 90th percentile hard-hit rate, and 93rd percentile xSLG. Despite going 0/4 last night, look for Gorman to bounce back tonight considering he holds a .903 OPS against righties.</p><h2><b>Why The Rangers Could Cover The Spread</b></h2><p><i><b>Last 10: 8-2 (First in the AL West)</b></i></p><p><i><b>Run Line Record: 40-20 (67%)</b></i></p><p><i><b>Over Record: 34-24-2 (59%)</b></i></p><p>Texas continues to be one of the best stories of the MLB season. The Rangers boast the most potent lineup in the league as they lead the majors with 6.4 runs per game. Consequently, they rank second in OPS and fifth in isolated power while recording the fourth-highest extra-base hit rate. Texas already secured a series win against the Cardinals  – their sixth consecutive series win. With one of the hottest pitchers in baseball on the bump, they stand a strong chance of covering yet again tonight.</p><p>Righty Jon Gray (6-1) makes his 12th start of the season for the Rangers tonight. The 31-year-old had a breakout year last season in his first year away from Coors Field. The former Rockies pitcher has exploded this season, however, as he owns a 2.51 ERA and 1.04 WHIP through 11 starts. His underlying numbers suggest this is no fluke either. Gray ranks in the 81st percentile in hard-hit rate and the 61st percentile in barrel percentage allowed. His fastball has been humming as well – ranking in the 78th percentile in velocity.  However, he owns a 4.39 expected ERA – perhaps pointing to some regression in the future. Still, he’s on an incredible run of late – winning five straight starts while allowing just three runs in 34 innings over that span.</p><p>The Rangers feature strong bats up and down their lineup and catcher Jonah Heim is no exception. The 27-year-old is in the midst of a breakout year thanks to a .293 average, seven home runs, and 46 RBI. This was a devastating blow to the Texas Rangers’ starting rotation and their hopes for the postseason, as they currently lead the AL West.</p><p>At the time of the injury, the Rangers held +2000 odds to win the World Series following their electric 39-20 start. So far, the World Series odds haven’t moved yet.</p><p>They currently sit at second in the entire American League with a complete turnaround from last year. With that said, they still hold one of the <a href="https://twitter.com/Covers/status/1666189241984901126?s=20" rel="noopener">best odds at +500</a> to win the American League pennant despite the injury and are still very much in the mix, per Covers.</p><p>Jacob deGrom’s acquisition in December had a major effect on the 2023 World Series odds. Texas currently owns the second-best record in MLB, along with the best run differential.</p><p>The Rangers offense has produced the most runs in baseball, even more than the machine-like Tampa Bay Rays and the mighty Los Angeles Dodgers.</p><p>Nathan Eovaldi, this past offseason’s other major addition, has pitched to a 2.24 ERA and has helped the Rangers post the third-best team ERA in the big leagues.</p><p>But make no mistake.</p><p>Losing deGrom, perhaps the best pitcher on the planet when healthy, hurts in a big way.</p><p>With the MLB trade deadline a little less than two months away, rumors are bound to swirl around the Rangers and any starting pitcher that becomes available.</p><p>Texas isn’t going to find a deGrom replacement on the trade market- one doesn’t exist.</p><p>But any potential pitching rotation upgrades need to be explored.</p><p>That said, here are three pitchers the Rangers must consider trading for after the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jacob-degrom-contract-has-unique-37-million-tommy-john-surgery-clause">deGrom Tommy John</a> news.</p><h2><b>Rangers trades after deGrom Tommy John news</b></h2><p><b>3. German Marquez (SP, Colorado Rockies)</b></p><p>Marquez is not as big of a name as some of the others that will grace this list, but that doesn’t mean he’s not a good pitcher.</p><p>The All-Star right hander has pitched to a passable 4.41 ERA despite taking the mound in the hitter-friendly Coors Field for his entire career.</p><p>But there’s reason to believe that Marquez can be an even better hurler away from Denver.</p><p>The 28-year-old owns a 3.80 ERA on the road compared to a 5.07 mark at home.</p><p>Plus, the Rangers know all about pitchers succeeding away from Coors.</p><p>Former Rockies starter Jon Gray, who has recorded a career-best 2.51 ERA for Texas this season, is thriving in a more pitcher-friendly park.</p><p>Why not roll the dice on another Rockies hurler, who won’t be an unrestricted free agent until 2025.</p><p><b>2. Jordan Montgomery (SP, St. Louis Cardinals)</b></p><p>The St. Louis Cardinals season has been an absolute disaster. The Cardinals, who many expected to be in contention in the National League Central, have been anything but, given their 25-36 record.</p><p>Last year’s trade deadline acquisition Jordan Montgomery is currently unable to buy a win, as the Cardinals have lost 10 straight games that he’s started.</p><p>As tensions rise in the Cardinals clubhouse, as manager Oliver Marmol’s seat warms up, and as the reality that this team <i>might not </i>be a contender sets in, would it be a surprise to anyone if Montgomery’s name popped up in trade rumors?</p><p>Montgomery, who inked a one-year contract with the Cards before the season began, is a free agent at the end of the year.</p><p>The Cardinals, rather than letting him walk for nothing, could at least try to pry a prospect or two away from the Rangers, who will be more desperate than they would have been under normal circumstances, given the deGrom news.</p><p>Plus, Montgomery, who pitched to a 3.94 ERA in the pressure-packed environment of New York with the Yankees, won’t be scared of meaningful baseball in August or October.</p><p>Despite his rough start to 2023, there’s reason to believe in a Montgomery bounce-back.</p><p>And the Rangers, who could use another back-end type starter in their rotation, would benefit from it.</p><p><b>1. Lucas Giolito (SP, Chicago White Sox)</b></p><p>Lucas Giolito, the ace for the White Sox, will likely be the prize of the MLB trade deadline, barring a Shohei Ohtani blockbuster.</p><p>Giolito might have gotten off to a rough start in 2023, but six no-hit innings against the New York Yankees on Tuesday night could be the start he needs to turn things around.</p><p>Plus, this is a guy who was an All-Star-type pitcher and big-time strikeout hurler as recently as 2021.</p><p>Still just 28 years old, Giolito is set to become a free agent this winter.</p><p>The <a href="https://theathletic.com/3206034/2022/03/23/disconnect-on-a-contract-extension-between-lucas-giolito-white-sox-predates-arbitration-impasse/">White Sox offered Giolito</a> a four-year, $50 million contract extension, an offer his camp deemed so low that they didn’t even bother to counter with one of their own.</p><p>Even if Chicago was winning, Giolito would likely be out the door this offseason anyway.</p><p>Now that Chicago is one of the worst teams in baseball again, there’s no chance he returns.</p><p>So, it would behoove the White Sox to trade him before August 1.</p><p>And the Rangers, who have a legitimate shot to win the World Series, need to push all their chips to the center of the table.</p><p>With MLB.com’s seventh-ranked farm system in the preseason, the Rangers have the means to take a big swing at this year’s trade deadline.</p><p>Why not make a splash with Giolito?</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Better question currently is, what’s next after the shocking <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rangers-news-jacob-degrom-tommy-john-update-elbow-injury" rel="noopener">Tommy John diagnosis</a> he received today?</p><p>On Tuesday the Texas Rangers announced that the two-time Cy Young award winner would be undergoing Tommy John surgery to repair a tear in his ulnar collateral ligament. It will be deGrom’s second Tommy John procedure of his career, with this being the second time deGrom has undergone procedure in his career. His first procedure took place in October 2010 when he was coming up as a minor leaguer with the New York Mets.</p><p>Of course, this type of surgery will put deGrom out for the rest of the 2023 season, and possibly well into next season.</p><h2><b>From dominant to deflated</b></h2><p>For as dominant of a player that deGrom has been throughout his career, his greatest opponent has been himself, specifically, his health. He hasn’t started more than 15 games since 2019. Over the last three seasons, and not accounting for the 2020 pandemic season, deGrom has only played in a total of 32 games. Starting from 2014 through 2019, deGrom averaged 30.5 games per season. He also won back-to-back Cy Young Awards in 2018 and 2019, pitching over 200 innings in each campaign with a 1.70 ERA in the former and a 2.43 mark in the latter.</p><p>His career has been nothing but a constant start-and-stop; victory and defeat. Every time he starts to gain a little momentum, like he was beginning to with his new Rangers team this season, it all comes to a striking halt. This time, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jacob-degroms-emotional-reaction-to-needing-tommy-john-surgery" rel="noopener">hearing the worst news</a> any pitcher wants to hear, with a Tommy John diagnosis.</p><h2><b>What’s next for deGrom?</b></h2><p>What’s next for Jacob deGrom and how can he recover from yet another devastating setback? The 34-year-old just signed a record deal with the Rangers in the offseason, five-years, $185 million. However, it does include a Tommy John <a href="https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/jacob-degrom-injury-update-rangers-ace-to-get-second-tommy-john-surgery-latest-blow-for-oft-injured-pitcher/" rel="noopener">clause</a> with a sixth-year club option worth between $20 and $37 million, dependent on award voting and inning totals. But would the Rangers even want to exercise that option if and when the time comes? It wouldn’t be surprising if they have a bit of buyer’s remorse right now.</p><p>Typically, a second Tommy John surgery involves a more extensive rehabilitation process and carries higher inherent risks compared to the initial surgery. This is a player that essentially needs a “fragile” label on his jersey instead of a sponsorship or team logo. The earliest that deGrom should touch a mound is spring training in 2025… maybe. But even then, the Rangers would need to find a way to get deGrom plenty of reps, possibly in the minors for a bit to reinsure his health.</p><h2><b>A new role for deGrom</b></h2><p>By the time deGrom returns, he could be nearing 36. With his long history of repeated injuries and the Rangers attempting to maximize every bit of the $185 million they spent for him, would it be out of the realm of possibility for them to consider him in a new role?</p><p>Hall of Fame pitcher John Smoltz is considered one of the greatest pitchers of all-time but earned those accolades by beginning his career as a starting pitcher and moving later on as a closer. It was due to a troublesome elbow that Smoltz had to have surgery in 2000. The Atlanta Braves weren’t sure if Smoltz could withstand working close to 200 innings a year any longer as a starter, so they moved him into the closer role where he finished his career with 154 saves.</p><p>It wouldn’t be the worst of ideas if deGrom took on a role much like what Smoltz did at the end of his career. It would certainly take a lot of the strain and pressure off that comes with being a starting pitcher, mentally and physically. deGrom has the ability to use any number of his pitches effectively, but in the closer role, he could definitely take advantage of his 99mph four-seam fastball, along with his 92mph slider, even mixing in his changeup if he needed to.</p><p>The biggest hurdle Jacob deGrom simply has to get through right now is getting and staying healthy, though. That’s his priority. His $37 million option for the 2028 season would kick in if he pitched at least 160 innings in 2027 and was a top-five Cy Young finisher. There are other stipulations in the contract that could trigger a $30 million salary for 2028.</p><p>The Rangers made deGrom the third highest-paid pitcher in MLB in terms of average annual value. At $37 million per year, deGrom’s contract is only dwarfed by the deals belonging to Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer. After signing a five-year, $185 million contract <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rangers-news-texas-inks-mets-ace-jacob-degrom-to-massive-5-year-185-million-deal" rel="noopener">with the Rangers </a>in free agency, deGrom could miss the better part of his first two seasons in Texas.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rangers-news-jacob-degrom-tommy-john-update-elbow-injury" rel="noopener">Jacob deGrom’s Tommy John surgery</a> is scheduled for next week. The Rangers’ starting pitcher was placed on the injured list on April 29 with right elbow inflammation, though the injury turned out to be much worse than Texas initially knew it to be.</p><p>“This stinks,” deGrom said through tears, via The Dallas Morning News’ Evan Grant. “It’s not ideal. But at least we know what it is now. I want to get it fixed and will set a goal to be back before the end of next year.”</p><p>The Rangers transferred deGrom<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rangers-make-inevitable-jacob-degrom-injury-move" rel="noopener"> to the 60-day IL</a> Monday. There was hope among Texas fans that the move was simply a formality because the pitcher wouldn’t be ready to return until very late June or early July.</p><p>It will mark the second time that deGrom is undergoing Tommy John surgery. Shortly after being selected by the New York Mets in the 2010 MLB Draft, deGrom underwent the procedure to repair a torn UCL in his elbow.</p><p>Once deGrom made his MLB debut in 2014, he became one of the most reliable starters in baseball. He won the 2014 NL Rookie of the Year award with a 2.69 ERA in 22 starts. From 2015-2019, deGrom averaged 29.8 starts per year. After winning consecutive NL Cy Young awards, deGrom made 12 starts in the 60-game pandemic-shortened season.</p><p>Injuries became a problem for deGrom in 2021. He only made 15 starts that season and 11 starts in the 2022 campaign. Six starts were all deGrom was able to make for the Rangers before his 2023 came to an abrupt end.</p><p>Because the recovery from Tommy John surgery is so extensive, it’s unknown if deGrom will be able to pitch at all during the 2024 season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rangers-news-jacob-degrom-injury-placed-on-15-day-il" rel="noopener">Rangers then placed deGrom</a> on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation.</p><p>deGrom had begun to work his way back from the elbow injury, as he threw 31 pitches in a bullpen session in May, with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rangers-news-jacob-degrom-bullpen-injury-timetable">Rangers manager Bruce Bochy</a> saying that he “felt fine” coming out of it. They’ve since preceded to drop two consecutive series against the Guardians and Pirates before losing the series opener to the Rangers last night. St. Louis continues to hit well as they rank 10th in runs, ninth in OPS, and sixth in isolated power. They have hit significantly worse on the road, however, they also covered 63% of their games as road underdogs. Still, they face a tough matchup tonight against the league’s best offense. Consequently, the Cardinals need a strong start from their rookie starter and an improved offensive effort tonight if they want to cover.</p><p>Rookie Matthew Liberatore (1-1) makes his third start of the season for the Cardinals tonight. St. Louis’ top pitching prospect looked sharp in his debut – allowing no runs on three hits in 5.0 innings against the Brewers. He was roughed up in his two subsequent appearances, however, allowing two runs in relief against the Dodgers before taking a loss against the Guardians. That said. the 23-year-old southpaw oozes potential thanks to a solid fastball and dangerous slider. Although he lacks one elite pitch, his diverse arsenal and elite command made him a prized prospect in the minors. That said, he faces the toughest test of his young career tonight against the league’s top-scoring offense. The Rangers are especially dangerous facing lefties – against whom they own an .837 OPS.</p><p>Despite the future promise of Liberatore, the Cardinals likely need to provide him with ample run support if they want to cover tonight. That starts with their star-studded corner infield of Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado. While Goldschmidt regressed somewhat in May, he still finished with a stellar .380 OBP to go along with six home runs and 53 total bases. As for Arenado, he bounced back from a brutal opening month to bat .290 and lead the team with 22 RBI and 56 total bases in May.</p><h2><b>Why The Rangers Could Cover The Spread</b></h2><p><i><b>Last 10: 8-2 (First in the NL West)</b></i></p><p><i><b>Run Line Record: 39-20 (66%)</b></i></p><p><i><b>Over Record: 33-24-2 (58%)</b></i></p><p>Texas continues to blast its way through the MLB this season as they now hold the second-most wins in the majors. That is primarily thanks to their stellar offense which has propelled them to a +153 run differential – the biggest mark in the majors. Although they only managed four runs in last night’s win, they still cranked out 11 hits. Considering they rank second in the league in OPS and lead the league in BABIP, the Rangers are a sure-fire bet to score runs in bunches against a rookie pitcher tonight. That said, they’ll need a strong outing from Dane Dunning if they want to cover as 1.5-run favorites tonight.</p><p>Righty Dane Dunning (4-1) makes his sixth start of the season for the Rangers tonight. Dunning flashed promise as a starter the last two seasons but has taken his game up a notch in 2023. Between 13 appearances out of the bullpen and from the starting rotation, Dunning holds a 2.06 ERA and 1.04 WHIP. Interestingly, his strikeout stuff is down to a career-low 6.0 K/9 despite his success in limiting runs. Since officially entering the starting rotation in May, Dunning has been rock-solid and has yet to allow more than three runs in any start. Although he is coming off perhaps his worst start of the season, Dunning has been lights-out at home where he holds a 1.47 ERA.</p><p>Texas boasts dangerous bats up and down their lineup with eight regulars holding at least a .260 batting average. Chief among those is second baseman, Marcus Semien. The 32-year-old has established himself as an early MVP candidate thanks to a May stretch that saw him bat .322 and collect 59 total bases. He primarily covers the NFL, MLB and NBA.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">MLB</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>If there was any faint hope that Texas Rangers ace <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rangers-news-jacob-degrom-bullpen-injury-timetable" rel="noopener">Jacob deGrom’s return from injury</a> might not be far away, that optimism has been dashed. The Rangers have placed Jacob deGrom on the 60-day injured list.</p><p>DeGrom was moved to the 60-day IL in order <a href="https://twitter.com/Evan_P_Grant/status/1665844469545988097">to make room</a> on the Rangers’ roster for pitcher Spencer Howard. Howard is coming back from a right lat injury that had him on the 60-day IL.</p><p>The move might have been an inevitability, given deGrom’s injury and subsequent recovery. The Rangers’ pitcher hasn’t been on an MLB mound since he left Texas’ game against the New York Yankees on April 28 with right forearm tightness. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rangers-news-jacob-degrom-injury-placed-on-15-day-il" rel="noopener">Rangers put deGrom</a> on the IL the following day with elbow inflammation. Because deGrom isn’t very close to making a rehab start, there’s a good chance that he wouldn’t be ready to return to the majors after 60 days, even if he hasn’t suffered a setback.</p><p>Rangers General Manager Chris Young said that deGrom would join the team Monday and Texas <a href="https://apnews.com/article/rangers-degrom-mlb-8c0605559a81c0ee6cafe94749044ebc?utm_source=facebook&amp;utm_medium=news_tab&amp;mibextid=Zxz2cZ">would determine</a> how to proceed with the pitcher’s recovery.</p><p>“We’ll get him back Monday, kind of evaluate where he is, what he’s been able to do over the last few days, and what the next steps are and go from there,” Young said, via The Associated Press.</p><p>Over the last few seasons, deGrom has become all too familiar with spending time on the IL. It’s been four years since deGrom last made more than 15 starts in a single season.</p><p>The Rangers signed deGrom to a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rangers-news-texas-inks-mets-ace-jacob-degrom-to-massive-5-year-185-million-deal" rel="noopener">five-year, $185 million contract</a> in free agency. The New York Mets weren’t willing to match the offer and keep their ace because of deGrom’s injury history.</p><p>In six starts with Texas, deGrom has a 2.67 ERA and a minuscule 0.76 WHIP.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
