Fans know they are in danger of losing one of the most unique and marketable athletes baseball has seen in a long time. A postseason berth could decrease the chances of watching Shohei Ohtani leave for nothing this offseason. A couple of tough losses, and those ticks get louder. This is the agonizing fate the franchise and their supporters must endure for another 100 games.</p><p>With that type of urgency and pressure, underachieving players are going to be even easier to notice. And their shortcomings will be harder to forgive. The Angels (28-26) remain an enigma heading into June with up-and-down play and a competitive American League West making it difficult to gauge their future outlook. They are good enough to not <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-angels-shohei-ohtani-trade-plans-firm-update" rel="noopener">entertain moving Ohtani</a> at the trade deadline but might not be good enough to convince him to stay.</p><p>This dilemma is a nightmare for the organization, one they desperately tried to avoid following an active winter that saw LA acquire starting pitcher Tyler Anderson, infielder Gio Urshela and right fielder Hunter Renfroe. Urshela is batting over .300, Renfroe is showing off his cannon for an arm and Anderson has settled down a bit after a rough April. The biggest culprits are actually homegrown products who were expected to build off promising 2022 campaigns.</p><p>They have not so far, and fans are painfully aware. Let’s take a closer look at these 2 Angels players who have quickly fallen out of favor in 2023.</p><h2>2. Reid Detmers</h2><p>Pitching woes have long been associated with this franchise, LA actually had the ninth best ERA in the MLB last year. Top prospect Reid Detmers was a key reason for that resurgence, recording a 3.77 ERA in 25 starts. Two of those included a no-hitter and an immaculate inning. The left-hander became only the third pitcher to accomplish both <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/angels-news-move-aside-shohei-ohtani-reid-detmers-notches-immaculate-feat-not-seen-in-seven-years" rel="noopener">incredible feats</a> in the same season.</p><p>Detmers’ momentum has halted in 2023, though. He is 0-4 with a 4.93 ERA. Now, there are certainly Halo fans who will point to his improved strikeout and swing-and-miss rates as a cause for optimism. And yes, he is still only 23 years of age, so some patience will be afforded. But his struggles on the third time against the batting order are a problem right now.</p><p>The Angels can’t burn out their bullpen. They need to trust their starters to get through the sixth inning. Detmers has done that just once this year and has failed to get out of the fifth three times already. Progression needs to be accelerated under these current circumstances. Desperation to quickly correct the problems of the past puts an unfair burden on the the 2020 first-round pick. But he needs to quickly find that balance between imposing stuff and solid durability.</p><h2>1. Taylor Ward</h2><p>Another former top pick who was being heralded as a strong 2023 All-Star candidate. There is still time, but Taylor Ward looks like a completely different player than the one who the tore the seams off the ball for a stretch in the beginning and end of last season. Late-summer 2022 Ward- <a href="https://www.fangraphs.com/players/taylor-ward/17548/splits?position=OF&amp;season=2022" rel="noopener">batted .206 July-August</a>, per FanGraphs- has been repeatedly stepping into the batter’s box.</p><p>His .220/.295/.312/ .607 slash line is dismal all around, but making matters worse is that this there is little evidence to suggest a turnaround. Aside from last year’s productivity, Ward has never been able to stick in the Angels’ lineup, due to either injury or inconsistent play. His breakthrough and manager <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/phil-nevin-gets-real-on-the-al-mvp-odds-of-this-angels-slugger-and-its-not-who-you-think" rel="noopener">Phil Nevin’s rousing endorsement</a> ignited the fandom. Again, a very desperate fandom ready for a new day to dawn in Anaheim.</p><p>At 29 years of age, they are going to want to see the official arrival of Taylor Ward immediately. A third legitimate, albeit lesser, star player next to Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout could be the difference in a postseason trip or another disappointing season for the Angels.</p><p>The timer will keep on ticking, as this club delicately tries to cut the right wires and avoid another implosion.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The game will be televised by FS1.</p><p>This is the first of three straight games for the Angels (28-26) against the White Sox (22-33) in Chicago.</p><p>The Angels lost their last three games against the Miami Marlins after they had won six of seven contests. Meanwhile, the White Sox have lost three of their last four games after they had won six of nine.</p><p>Los Angeles currently ranks fourth in the AL West behind the Texas Rangers (33-19), defending World-Series champion Houston Astros (31-21) and Seattle Mariners. It is looking to reach the postseason for the first time since 2014.</p><p>The White Sox rank second-to-last in the AL Central with a 22-33 record.</p><p>In his 13th season with the Angels, Trout is batting .278. He has hit 12 home runs and has 28 RBIs.</p><p>Trout’s OPS is .888, which ranks No. 20 in the MLB.</p><p>Mike Trout is considered one of the best — if not the best — players in the league. His voice carries a lot of weight, especially as the league looks to honor veterans on Memorial Day.</p><p>Chicago’s top player at the plate has been centerfielder Luis Robert Jr. He has batted .271 with 13 home runs and 30 RBIs. The right-hander <a href="https://www.mlb.com/prospects/angels/ben-joyce-690829" rel="noopener">is currently ranked</a> as the ninth-best prospect <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/angels-news-sam-bachman-pitching-prospect" rel="noopener">in the Angels organization</a>, via Pipeline.</p><p>Joyce will be making a big jump to the majors as he has yet to appear above the AA level. However, he possesses a fastball not many other pitchers can touch. While at Tennessee, Joyce threw the fastest pitch in college baseball history at 105.5.</p><p>His success with the Volunteers led him to being drafted by the Angels in the third-round of the 2022 MLB Draft. Joyce was immediately sent to the AA level, where he has appeared in 27 games. He holds a 3.45 ERA and a 44/17 K/BB ratio.</p><p>Joyce will be joining Los Angeles’ bullpen. The Angels are tied for ninth in the MLB with their 3.70 bullpen ERA. While they’ve been overall solid, LA’s bullpen ranks 21st in strikeouts with 189.</p><p>Ben Joyce will certainly bring some strikeout potential to the Angels. While he hasn’t been a professional baseball player for long, Joyce’s velocity makes him an intriguing pitcher right out of the gate. There’s a chance he struggles at first, simply making the jump from AA to the MLB. However, the Angels certainly believe in him.</p><p>With Shohei Ohtani set to be a free agent, the Angels will do anything they can to pursue a World Series. We are in Anaheim, sharing our MLB odds <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/betting" rel="noopener">series</a>, making a Marlins-Angels prediction and pick while showing you how to watch.</p><p>The Marlins defeated the Angels 8-5 in 10 innings. Amazingly, it was a back-and-forth game as both teams held leads at one point. The Marlins started the scoring in the first inning when Yuli Gurriel clipped a single to left-center field to give the Marlins a 1-0 lead. However, the Angels responded when Gio Urshela clapped a double to deep center field to tie the game. The Marlins retook the lead in the fifth inning when Luis Arraez drove in a run with a single to right-center field to make it 2-1 Miami. However, the Angels took their first-and-only lead of the game when Matt Thais clipped a single to right-center field to drive in Jared Walsh and Brandon Drury to make it 3-2 Angels.</p><p>Chase Silseth came into the game for Shohei Ohtani and immediately walked the leadoff hitter. Unfortunately, it set him up for failure as Jorge Soler clobbered a two-run bomb to center field to give the Marlins the lead back. It was the fifth straight game with a home run for Soler. However, Urshela golfed a shot to deep center field to tie the game. The game went into extra innings, and now both teams had a chance. Significantly, the Marlins took advantage by driving in four runs off Jaime Barria. All of the runs were unearned as the Marlins took advantage of Mickey Moniak’s fielding error. Then, the Marlins allowed one in the 10th before shutting the door down.</p><p>The Angels wasted another great start by Ohtani, who allowed two earned runs in six innings. Then, their bullpen blew the lead, and they could not do anything in the 10th while allowing another game to get away.</p><p>Eury Perez will take the mound for the Marlins and comes in with a 1-1 record and a 3.86 ERA. Then, they have found a way to capitalize on these errors and win.</p><p>Soler has been amazing, with five dingers in five games. Now, he has a batting average of .259 with 17 home runs, 35 RBIs, and 31 runs. Garrett Cooper is another player the Marlins depend on. However, he is struggling, with a batting average of .236 with five home runs, 19 RBIs, and 11 runs. Bryan De La Cruz is batting .298 with six home runs, 20 RBIs, and 23 runs. Amazingly, he had four hits on Friday but struggled yesterday. De La Cruz will attempt to keep it up and deliver for an offense that ranks ninth in batting average. But the Marlins are also 19th in on-base percentage, 27th in runs, 22nd in home runs, and 18th in slugging percentage.</p><p>The Marlins will cover the spread if they can score early and put the Angels on their heels. Then, they must continue to pitch well.</p><h2><b>Why The Angels Could Cover The Spread</b></h2><p>The Angels have two of the best players in the world in Ohtani and Mike Trout. However, they are also part of an inconsistent offense that often struggles to put runs across the board.</p><p>Ohtani is batting .269 with 12 home runs, 33 RBIs, and 28 runs. Unfortunately, he has gone 0 for 8 in this series, and the Angels need his bat to heat up to have a chance. Trout is batting .284 with 12 home runs, 28 RBIs, and 33 runs. Additionally, he is 4 for 8 in this series. Urshella has been a great addition for the Angels, batting .318 with two home runs, 23 RBIs, and 19 runs. Likewise, he provided two of the RBIs in yesterday’s game.</p><p>The Angels will cover the spread if they can score some runs early. They trail the Astros and the New York Yankees by a narrow margin in the wild card race. Jorge Soler of the Marlins is on fire, having homered in each of his last four games. The Marlins being ahead of the defending National League champion Philadelphia Phillies on May 27 is not something many baseball experts predicted, but it has happened. The Marlins have been a great team in one-run ballgames through the first two months of the season and have been tougher and more resilient than most pundits thought they would be.</p><p>It also has to be said that after a few really good starts at the beginning of the 2023 season, Shohei Ohtani has struggled as a pitcher. He has a 5.23 ERA in his last five appearances. He has hit at an elite level this year, but his pitching has not been up to standard in recent weeks.</p><h2><b>Why The Angels Could Cover The Spread</b></h2><p>The Angels know that Ohtani is not going to keep struggling as a pitcher. He is too good and talented to continue to scuffle on the mound. The Marlins do not have an especially prolific offense or a deep batting order. Jazz Chisholm, one of their better all-around players, is out with an injury. This is a really good spot for Ohtani to do well. He’s made 23 starts in the minor leagues over the last three seasons to the tune of a 4.48 ERA.</p><p>This season in six starts with Double-A Rocket City, Bachman has a 5.81 ERA with 29 strikeouts and 20 walks. He tossed five scoreless innings in his first start this season but allowed 17 earned runs in the five starts since.</p><p>This is an intriguing move by the Angels considering Bachman’s numbers in the minor leagues, but he is a flamethrower that may be better suited in the bullpen. With just 84.1 innings of professional baseball under his belt, Bachman is being thrown into the fire without much experience against MLB-caliber bats.</p><p>The Angels’ pitching staff is middle of the pack in terms of ERA, ranking 16th in the league. The bullpen has been very solid, posting the seventh-best ERA so far this season.</p><p>LA is one of the hottest teams in the league right now having won four straight games and six of its last seven. At this point in his career, the veteran simply cares more about winning and finally getting the opportunity to compete in the postseason, something that’s only happened once since coming into the big leagues.</p><p>Mike Trout and the Angels are actually playing decent baseball so far, sitting at 28-23 in the AL West. They’re just four games behind the division leader Texas Rangers. In fact, Los Angeles has won four in a row as well and seven of their last 10.</p><p>Although Trout finished just 1 for 4 in the rubber match against Boston, that one hit was evidently a big one. The 31-year-old is batting .275 on the year with 12 homers and 27 RBI in 47 games. Instead, he will likely report to Salt Lake and play for the Bees.</p><p>Brett Phillips has played at the MLB level since 2017, spending time with the Kansas City Royals, Tampa Bay Rays, Milwaukee Brewers, and Baltimore Orioles in addition to the Angels, sporting a career batting average of .225 with 13 home runs and 71 RBI in 316 games. He is also a Gold Glove defender and a good baserunner. Unfortunately, his offensive production has been abysmal. That said, he still may be able to carve out a big league role due to his defense and speed.</p><p>It is unclear what Brett Phillips’ future holds with the Los Angeles Angels. He could potentially return to the Major Leagues if he can improve his offensive production. However, he could also be traded or released. In the meantime, Phillips will focus on playing well in Triple-A. He has the opportunity to prove to the Angels that he deserves another chance in the Major Leagues. Boston entered Los Angeles with back-to-back series wins over the Mariners and Padres but has now lost three in a row thanks to dropping the first two against the Angels. Still, the Red Sox boast one of the most potent lineups in baseball as they rank fourth in runs, eighth in OPS, and fifth in extra-base hits. That said, the Red Sox have struggled mightily in the pitching department where they hold the sixth-highest ERA in the league. They’ve been particularly susceptible to the long ball – allowing the third-most HR/9 in the majors. Consequently, they need a strong outing from their starter tonight coupled with a bounce-back performance from their offense if they want to cover as road favorites.</p><p>Southpaw James Paxton (1-0) makes his third start of the season for Boston tonight. After pitching just six games since 2019, not much was expected of Paxton upon making his 2023 debut earlier this month. He’s done nothing but impress thus far – holding a 2.45 ERA and 1.09 WHIP. Despite missing nearly three full seasons, Paxton’s strikeout stuff remains elite. With 14 strikeouts over his first 11 innings, he looked the part of a real ace in Boston’s rotations. It isn’t as if he’s played slouches, either, with his two previous starts coming against the Cardinals and Padres. That said, he is hard to trust given the injury concerns and lack of experience over the last few years. While his hot start to 2023 certainly bodes well for Boston’s chances of covering tonight, the Angels crushed lefties this season to the tune of a .282 average and .431 slugging percentage.</p><p>As mentioned above, the Red Sox relied on their offense to carry the load thus far. Outfielder Masataka Yoshida and third baseman Rafael Devers lead the way for the MLB’s fourth-ranked offense. Yoshida leads the team with a .300 average while Devers provides the power with 13 homers and 44 RBI – ranking fifth and third in baseball, respectively. Although the team as a whole has slumped in recent games, they need to bounce back quickly tonight if they want to salvage the series and avoid being swept for just the fourth time all year.</p><h2><b>Why The Angels Could Cover The Spread</b></h2><p><i><b>Last 10: 6-4 (Third in the AL West)</b></i></p><p><i><b>Run Line Record: 25-25 (50%)</b></i></p><p><i><b>Over Record: 22-24-4 (48%)</b></i></p><p>The Angels may have finally pieced together a worthy supporting cast for superstars Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout. Los Angeles sits firmly in the playoff picture in a tightly-contested AL West. They’ve been particularly hot of late – winning five of their last six games. The Angels don’t have many holes on either side of the plate – ranking ninth in runs per game and 16th in team ERA. Still, they face an uphill battle in securing a series sweep and will need their pitching to remain lockdown if they want to cover as home underdogs.</p><p>Veteran Tyler Anderson (1-0) makes his ninth start of the season for the Angels tonight. Despite not having a loss to his name thus far, the southpaw has struggled this season. He holds ugly ratios with a 5.27 ERA and 1.62 WHIP but has pitched better this month. After giving up 5+ runs in 3/5 April starts, he’s yet to allow more than three earned runs this month. That said, he still hasn’t looked anything close to the ace he developed into on the Dodgers last year. Matched up with a potent Red Sox lineup, Anderson needs to continue his upward trend tonight if the Angels want to cover.</p><h2><b>Final Red Sox-Angels Prediction &amp; Pick</b></h2><p>Despite the Angels taking the first two games of the series, the pitching matchup tonight makes me weary of picking them to secure the sweep. On paper, the Red Sox are currently slashing an extremely lethal .266 batting average as a team which ranks as the fourth-best mark in all of baseball. Not to mention, Boston does a good amount of their damage with the long ball and with extra-base hits as they are raking a splendid .440 slugging percentage through the first 48 games of the season. More specifically, be on the lookout for the Japanese phenom in Mastaka Yoshida to continue to show off his superstar abilities with his impressive .360 batting average during his current six-game hitting streak.</p><p>Clearly, the offense is going to have to show up tonight after putting together a stinker on Monday that resulted in only one run on four hits, but Boston will also need their starter to put together a solid outing on the road in a hostile environment.
