He studied journalism and communication at UConn.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">MLB</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The San Diego Padres came into the 2023 MLB season as favorites to win the National League West, and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dodgers-news-james-outman-grand-slam-twins" rel="noopener">James Outman</a> of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dodgers-news-dustin-may-gets-timetable-update-ahead-of-bobby-millers-mlb-debut" rel="noopener">Los Angeles Dodgers</a> said the team used that as bulletin board material, with Freddie Freeman specifically <a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/flippin-bats-with-ben-verlander/id1559847035?i=1000614277064" rel="noopener">bringing it up</a>.</p><p>“Yeah, it’s definitely heard,” James Outman said of the Padres hype prior to the 2023 season on the Flippin’ Bats podcast with Ben Verlander. “I think Freddie (Freeman) put it well, he was like, ‘yeah, we lost a bunch of guys, but you look at our lineup, we still have All-Star after All-Star.’”</p><p>It turns out that Freddie Freeman was right. The Dodgers are currently 31-19 and sit in first place in the National League West, 1.5 games ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks.  The San Diego Padres have been one of the biggest disappointments this season, currently holding a 22-26 record, sitting eight games back of the Dodgers. The Diamondbacks seem like a serious contender, so the Padres will have to compete with them as well.</p><p>James Outman is having a very solid rookie campaign, <a href="https://www.fangraphs.com/players/james-outman/24770/stats?position=OF" rel="noopener">hitting</a> .245 with a .333 on-base percentage and nine home runs, according to Fangraphs. He played four games last season, but this is his first full season in MLB.</p><p>Unsurprisingly, Freeman has been great this season, <a href="https://www.fangraphs.com/players/freddie-freeman/5361/stats?position=1B" rel="noopener">hitting</a> .327 with a .399 on-base percentage and nine home runs, according to Fangraphs.</p><p>It will be interesting to see if the Dodgers can win the National League West once again, this time dealing with a new challenger in the Diamondbacks. Outman bounced back with a clutch go-ahead grand slam on Wednesday to give the Dodgers a lead and eventual victory over the Minnesota Twins. Outman <a href="https://twitter.com/SportsNetLA/status/1658959915170533376" rel="noopener">credited his teammates</a> for keeping him positive during his slump prior to the grand slam, per SportsNet LA.</p><p>“Felt like a breath of fresh air to be honest,” Outman said of his big home run. “My teammates were keeping me positive through it (struggling at the plate). It was hard, but my teammates… they were great. They were giving me advice, helping me out and I’m really thankful for that.”</p><p>James Outman remains a strong candidate to win NL Rookie of the Year. He’s displayed impressive power ability and has been a consistent force in the Dodgers lineup. Los Angeles entered 2023 with questions in their outfield, but Outman has been a key piece to the puzzle.</p><p>Los Angeles ultimately took two of three from the Twins at Dodger Stadium to wrap up their homestand. They will now head on the road to take on the St. Louis Cardinals for the first series of a 10-game road trip. Vargas is still hitting just .219 on the season, but he’s blasted home runs in back-to-back games.</p><p>Miguel Vargas is regarded as a pure hitter. He excels at taking the ball to all parts of the field and offers sneaky power. He now has four home runs on the season, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him surpass the 20-home run mark by season’s end.</p><p>Los Angeles believes in his potential. At just 23-years old, the sky seems to be the limit for him. He still has some development to do at the plate, but Vargas may be the next Dodgers’ star alongside James Outman.</p><p>Following a fairly mediocre start to the season, the Dodgers are playing well over the past couple of weeks. Los Angeles has gone 8-2 over their past 10 games, most recently <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dodgers-news-clayton-kershaw-hall-of-fame-brewers" rel="noopener">taking two of three</a> from the Milwaukee Brewers on the road. The San Diego Padres received the most hype in the NL West heading into the year, but the Dodgers simply don’t care. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dodgers-news-clayton-kershaw-james-outman-win-april-award" rel="noopener">reigning NL Rookie of the Month</a> award winner is off to a sizzling start in 2023. Mookie Betts, however, isn’t surprised by Outman’s incredible beginning to 2023. Betts recently <a href="https://twitter.com/Matthew__Moreno/status/1655399208478982145" rel="noopener">revealed that he expected</a> Outman to perform well prior to the season during a postgame interview with ESPN, per Matthew Moreno of Dodger Blue.</p><p>“He’s really good,” Betts said of Outman. “I was telling my family back in February before Spring Training, that’s the man everybody needs to watch out for because I feel like he’s very, very good at baseball. He’s just showing it.”</p><p>Betts’ postgame interview came after the Dodgers defeated the San Diego Padres on Sunday in extra innings, earning a 2-1 series victory on the road.</p><p>LA was down to the final out with Betts facing Padres’ closer Josh Hader in the 9th before Mookie hit a game-tying home run. The Dodgers held the Padres scoreless in the bottom of the 9th, and rookie Michael Busch singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th. James Outman proceeded to smash a 2-run homer in the 10th to provide the Dodgers with extra insurance. They went on to win the game 5-2.</p><p>Through 35 games in 2023, Outman is now slashing .274/.370/.581 with a .952 OPS and eight home runs. He’s been a key contributor for the Dodgers without question. It will be interesting to see if he can maintain his current pace throughout the ’23 campaign.</p><p>Outman, Betts, and the Dodgers traveled to Milwaukee following their series in San Diego and will play the Brewers on Monday night at 7:40 PM EST.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

LA’s young players have also made quite the impact to open the season.</p><p>With rookie James Outman already setting the league on fire, let’s take a look at how the Dodgers are silencing the critics with their youth movement.</p><h2><b>James Outman and Dodgers’ position player rookies</b></h2><p>James Outman won the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dodgers-news-clayton-kershaw-james-outman-win-april-award" rel="noopener">NL Rookie of the Month</a> award following a sizzling start to the season. He also smashed an extra inning clutch home run to help the Dodgers seal their series win versus the Padres on Sunday. Outman is a budding star with a high-ceiling, and the Dodgers are likely considering him as the leader of their current youth movement.</p><p>Miguel Vargas has endured some ups and downs in his rookie season while playing second base for Los Angeles. He’s displayed signs of stardom though, and his ability to get on-base should not be ignored.</p><p>James Outman and Miguel Vargas very well may emerge as the future of the Dodgers.</p><p>The same can be said for top prospect Diego Cartaya who’s still in the minor leagues. The only issue for Cartaya is finding a spot on the big league roster with Will Smith handling catching duties.</p><p>Michael Busch recently made his MLB debut and has already impacted the team as well. He’s another highly-regarded prospect and could earn a starting gig at some point if the opportunity presents itself.</p><p>The Dodgers have a solid young position player core. Their pitching, though, is what sets the organization apart from others.</p><h2><b>Dodgers’ young pitching</b></h2><p>Everyone around the MLB world knows how high of a ceiling Dodgers top pitching prospect Bobby Miller has. He’s a flame-thrower who’s struggled with command at times. Nevertheless, he could become a superstar for Los Angeles.</p><p>Miller hasn’t pitched in the big leagues yet this season. The Dodgers have still relied on their young pitching though.</p><p>People tend to forget that Dustin May is only 25-years old. Meanwhile, Julio Urias is just 26 years of age. But both of those pitchers are well-known around the MLB world given their time in the big leagues.</p><p>Ryan Pepiot, Michael Grove, and Gavin Stone have all impacted the Dodgers in 2023. Pepiot hasn’t pitched in a regular season game, but displayed his prowess in spring training. He was expected to earn a rotation spot before suffering a preseason injury.</p><p>Grove earned the final rotation spot but struggled before enduring an injury of his own. Gavin Stone has made just one start for the Dodgers’ rotation. Although the early results haven’t exactly been incredible to look at, the Dodgers’ farm system is stacked with pitchers. They simply won’t run out of pitching depth.</p><h2><b>Final thoughts</b></h2><p>The Dodgers’ offensive prospects have impressed more than their starting pitching prospects so far. Regardless, both areas are strong for Los Angeles, and has them set up well for the future.
