He was once a kid who idolized Bryce Harper and is now a potential MLB star…who still greatly idolizes Harper. Given the chance to meet him, he passed out of respect to the two-time MVP.</p><p>Kelenic was <a href="https://www.foxsports.com/stories/mlb/mariners-of-jarred-kelenics-breakout-has-idol-bryce-harpers-attention" rel="noopener">too shy to introduce himself</a> to Harper driving the Mariners’ recent road series against Harper’s Philadelphia Phillies, according to Jake Mintz of FOX Sports. He chalked it up to Harper looking busy despite having three days to have even a single conversation with him.</p><p>“He looked busy,” Kelenic, said, via FOX Sports. “I didn’t wanna bother him.” The Mariners’ slugger shared a story that illustrates how big of a fan he has been of Harper, who was very <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mariners-news-jared-kelenic-breakout-bryce-harper-taking-notice" rel="noopener">complimentary of his game</a>.</p><p>“My first memory of him was that video of his 500-foot homer at Tropicana,” Kelenic said to FOX Sports. “From then on I followed him every step of the way as a high schooler, junior college, the whole thing. I actually left a middle school dance of mine early to come home and watch his first MLB at-bat at Dodger Stadium.”</p><p>While it’s not wise to put Kelenic’s standards similar to those of a young Harper, the Mariners’ outfielder is finally looking like the star that was promised when he was traded to Seattle as a prospect in 2018. He has a .982 OPS and seven home runs through 26 games so far this season. His strikeout rate, while still very high, is declining and his exit velocity is making a huge jump.</p><p>In many ways, Kelenic and Harper took different paths to becoming high-level MLB players. Harper was touted as a great one almost right away and proved it immediately, winning his first MVP award at age 22. Kelenic’s age-22 season was miserable (an OPS+ of only 54) and led many to believe that he wouldn’t ever reach his potential. Only six players in all of MLB started the night with a higher OPS. The Mariners’ left fielder hit .181/.265/.350 in 93 games as a rookie in 2021. Kelenic was even worse during the 2022 season. He hit .141/.221/.313 in 54 games and split his time between Triple-A and the majors.</p><p>The 23-year-old is finally <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mariners-news-jarred-kelenic-wrigley-field-history-unreal-moonshot" rel="noopener">playing like the superstar</a> that the Mariners had hoped it acquired in 2018. The New York Mets sent Kelenic to Seattle as part of the blockbuster trade that put Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz in the Big Apple. The Mets selected Kelenic with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft.</p><p>If it weren’t for Kelenic, the Mariners might be in big trouble. Ty France is the only other Seattle hitter who has an OPS north of .757. Kelenic has managed to silence critics over the early stages of the 2023 campaign.</p><p>After orchestrating a promising spring training where he hit .353, Kelenic has so far provided a much-needed spark in the bottom half of Seattle’s lineup this season. The third-year outfielder currently leads the team in multiple stats, from OPS (1.203) to total bases (32).</p><p>Kelenic is just coming off of a potent performance in the Mariners’ 5-3 win over the Colorado Rockies on Friday, where he homered for the fourth straight contest and also recorded two RBI in a game for the first time in the ongoing season.</p><p>It has been a roller-coaster run for Kelenic with the Mariners, and he much <a href="https://twitter.com/Mariners/status/1647308097453699072?s=20" rel="noopener">appreciates</a> the team’s fans for continuing to support him.</p><p>“The fans are always great,” Kelenic said during a press conference on Friday following the Mariners’ home victory against Colorado. “Obviously, it’s been a lot of ups and downs, but to know that they got my back is super rewarding, and I’ll never be able to tell each and every one of them how much I appreciate it.</p><p>“But that’s the stuff that, I’ll never forget that.”</p><p>Kelenic’s success in the season has much centered on his sound efficiency against four-seam fastballs. After all, he sent 81 balls deep during the 2022 MLB <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mariners-news-julio-rodriguezs-honest-message-after-2022-home-run-derby-loss-to-juan-soto" rel="noopener">Home Run Derby</a>.</p><p>Up 4-1 entering the eighth inning, the Mariners were able to extend their lead when Jarred Kelenic launched that solo blast that landed on the moon. Kelenic finished the game 2-for-4 and nearly had two home runs for the day, with his other hit ending up as a double despite having the same exit velocity as his homer in the eighth inning. Nevertheless, Kelenic’s power is legitimate. So far in the 2023 MLB season, Kelenic is in the 90th percentile in average exit velocity, 95th in hard hit percentage, and <a href="https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/jarred-kelenic-672284?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb" rel="noopener">85th</a> in max exit velocity. Through 11 games this season, the Mariners left fielder has three home runs to go with a .351 batting average, .415 OPB, and a .703 slugging.</p><p>With the win over the Cubs, the Mariners were able to snap a three-game losing skid and prevent a series sweep at the hands of Chicago. Logan Gilbert also picked up the win in that outing, as he allowed just an earned run on four hits with seven strikeouts across 6.2 innings of work on the mound.</p><p>The Mariners will take a rest Thursday before going back at it for the start of a three-game homestand against the Colorado Rockies on Friday.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mariners-3-reasons-win-2023-world-series" rel="noopener">Seattle Mariners outfielder belted</a> a 482-foot home run against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday. The blast is <a href="https://twitter.com/MarinersPR/status/1646251866257326083" rel="noopener">the longest home run</a> at Wrigley Field and the longest home run by a Mariners player in the Statcast Era (since 2015).</p><p>Kelenic has struggled to establish himself at the major league level since making his debut in May 2021 but has been scorching hot to start this season. Kelenic sports a .351 batting average and has homered in three straight games, driven in a run in five straight and has a seven-game hitting streak.</p><p>In 500 at-bats with the Mariners in 2021 and 2022, Kelenic had a .168 average but showed off his power with 21 home runs. The Mariners acquired Kelenic via trade from the New York Mets in December 2018. He was a highly touted prospect, ranking as high as fourth on MLB Pipeline’s top 100 prospects list.</p><p>The Mariners and many baseball analysts alike expected big things from Kelenic, but after a rough first two seasons in the big leagues, expectations were tempered. Kelenic entered the 2023 season at the age of 23 though, with still plenty of time to figure things out at the plate. It finally looks like he is starting to round into form.</p><p>Kelenic has been one of the few bright spots in an otherwise dismal start to the season for the Mariners. Seattle won on Wednesday to improve to 5-8. If the rest of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mariners-news-robbie-ray-dealt-tough-injury-update-after-dismal-debut-vs-guardians" rel="noopener">the talented Mariners roster</a> can figure things out and Jarred Kelenic can stay consistent at the plate, Seattle will be a very dangerous team in 2023.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
