At the time of writing, the Dodgers have a 23-15 record heading into their Friday night tilt against division rival San Diego Padres. And now, as if the Dodgers didn’t already boast an embarrassment of riches, they just got back veteran slugger JD Martinez <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dodgers-news-jd-martinez-injury-update-will-smith-return" rel="noopener">from the injured list</a>.</p><p>Martinez suffered a back injury on April 23, when the Dodgers took on the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. This kept him out for 20 days, but evidently, had the situation been more urgent, the 35-year old designated hitter could have returned sooner.</p><p>Speaking to reporters prior to his return against the Padres, JD Martinez revealed that he hasn’t really felt any considerable pain on his back <a href="https://www.dailybreeze.com/2023/05/12/j-d-martinez-returns-from-il-restoring-dodgers-lineup-to-full-health/" rel="noopener">for about a week</a>. Nevertheless, he wanted to take the time to get back to game shape and to doing what he does best: tear the cover off the baseball.</p><p>“It’s been great for about a week,” Martinez said, per J.P. Hoornstra of Daily Breeze. “It’s just been slowly building up. Monday wasn’t pretty, as far as swinging-wise, and where my swing was at. Tuesday was better. Wednesday was a lot better.”</p><p>May 12 would mark the first time in exactly a month that the Dodgers lineup will be at full strength. JD Martinez is hitting cleanup in his return, his position in the batting order before going down with injury.</p><p>Martinez also shed some light on how he exacerbated his injury, blaming himself for “trying to be a hero” by continuing to suit up for the Dodgers even as he began to feel some pain on his back.</p><p>Nevertheless, Martinez is back now, and the Dodgers will be better off for it. Martinez’s peripheral batting stats may not be the best, as his strikeout to walk ratio is 5:1, but he gives the NL West favorites yet another intimidating presence at the heart of the order. Through 23 games played and 98 plate appearances, Martinez has put up a slash line of .250/.306/.534, as even in his declined state, he can still hit the ball out of the park often.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

LA won’t put him behind the dish right away, with the 28-year-old serving as the DH Friday in place of Martinez.</p><p>Martinez has been nursing a sore back in the last few days and to prevent any further damage, the Dodgers are just giving him some time off. The slugger is swinging it well with Los Angeles after coming over in the offseason, hitting .250 with four homers, nine doubles, two triples, and 15 RBI in 23 games. He’s also slugging .534. It’s just some lower back tightness therefore it shouldn’t keep Martinez out for too long. That’s the hope, at least.</p><p>The Dodgers offense is producing 5.1 runs per game but sits at just .500 baseball, much in part to the inconsistency of their pitching staff, which owns a 4.72 ERA. Brusdar Graterol’s return to the bullpen should help while Max Muncy is also in the mix again after having his first child.</p><p>Dave Roberts’ squad plays the Cardinals all weekend long before facing the Philadelphia Phillies and San Diego Padres next week. He is looking to prove he is still the same player from his MVP campaign in 2018 with the Boston Red Sox.</p><p>In his last year in Boston, Martinez hit .274 with 16 home runs and 62 RBIs, a far cry from his 2018 numbers. His MVP year saw him hit 43 home runs, 130 RBIs, and hit for an average of .330. He also had an outlandish OPS of 1.031.</p><p>The Dodgers as a squad have had an up and down start to the 2023 MLB season, although they have played well as of late. They are coming off of a series in Chicago where they took three out of four games from the Cubs, hitting the ball well in all three wins. It is a good time to see their bats get hot before they get ready to face a Pirates team that has come out of the gates playing great baseball.</p><p>The Pirates are 16-7 and have a team ERA of 3.63, good for eighth best in the MLB. Call it the pump and dump.”</p><p>JD Martinez endured a difficult second half of the 2022 season, but he still had a strong campaign overall. The 35-year-old ultimately slashed .274/.341/.448 with a .790 OPS and 16 home runs. Additionally, he was named to his fifth career All-Star team.</p><p>Martinez’s comments should excite Dodgers fans. If the slugger was dealing with a “bad habit” last year and still made the All-Star team, one can only imagine what he will be able to do in 2023 after recognizing the mistake.</p><h2><b>More Dodgers spring training notes</b></h2><p>Clayton Kershaw labored in his first spring training outing, surrendering three runs in three innings. He <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dodgers-news-clayton-kershaw-staying-positive-after-world-baseball-classic-fallout" rel="noopener">remained optimistic after the game</a>, however, stating that he felt healthy.</p><p>James Outman continues to perform well and is making a strong case for the center field job. He added another RBI hit on Friday.</p><p>The Dodgers won their game against the Angels by a final score of 6-5. Their win came via a walk-off walk in the bottom of the ninth. For Martinez, the decision to join the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jd-martinez-why-he-will-be-a-2023-all-star-for-the-dodgers" rel="noopener">Dodgers came down</a> to one major factor.</p><p>Martinez signed a one-year, $10 million contract with Los Angeles this offseason. As he looked for his new free agent home, Martinez wanted to go <a href="https://theathletic.com/4228758/2023/02/19/dodgers-jd-martinez-david-peralta/" rel="noopener">to a true winner</a>, via Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. The Dodgers offered Martinez an opportunity to do just that.</p><p>“I’m getting to the back end of my career and I know this is a really good chance,” Martinez said. “I didn’t want to be on a team that was going to be rebuilding. I wanted to be on a team that was going to be in the run for it and is going to be right there come October. That was my main thing. That was literally my main focus.</p><p>JD Martinez has been in the MLB since 2011. However, he has only reached the postseason four times. While he won a World Series with the Red Sox in 2018, the 35-year-old is looking for one more ring before his career comes to a close.</p><p>The Dodgers will be happy to have Martinez’s bat in the lineup. Over his 12-year career, Martinez has hit .288 with 282 home runs and 899 RBI. He is a five-time All Star and a three-time Silver Slugger.</p><p>Los Angeles is a perennial World Series contender and one of the favorites entering the upcoming season.
