Cleveland is fresh off of a division title, however, they are aiming to reach new heights in 2023. Guardians President of Baseball Operations Chris <a href="https://twitter.com/MLBNetwork/status/1603774451836928003" rel="noopener">Antonetti recently joined</a> MLB Network to break down the moves.</p><p>“It probably all starts with Mike’s defense,” Antonetti said in reference to the Zunino <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/guardians-news-cleveland-doubles-up-on-free-agency-pop-after-josh-bell-deal-with-mike-zunino" rel="noopener">signing</a>. “The leadership he has behind the plate, the way he helps lead a pitching staff… and then with Mike we’ve all seen what he’s capable of doing offensively. In 2021 was an All-Star. I think he was among the most powerful catchers behind the plate.”</p><p>Antonetti then commented on the Guardians’ decision to add Josh Bell to the team.</p><p>“One of the areas we really sought to improve to our team was to add to our offense. And we think Josh (Bell) not only is a really professional hitter, he controls the strike zone well, he’s demonstrated his power potential in the past. But he’s also a phenomenal teammate that’s a unifying force in the clubhouse.”</p><p>The Guardians will be an interesting team to watch in 2023. This was a ball club that was picked by many to finish 3rd or 4th in the AL Central last year. But they ultimately not only won the division, but defeated the Tampa Bay Rays and almost upset the New York Yankees in the postseason.</p><p>Cleveland will enter the 2023 campaign with an exciting young core of players to go along with these crucial additions.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

But for Bell, the decision to play in Cleveland was about more than money. Bell <a href="https://twitter.com/CleGuardians/status/1602774789503864832" rel="noopener">revealed</a> the Jose Ramirez-based reason he signed with the Guardians, per the Guardians Twitter account.</p><p>“It’s tough to not get that itch, get that want to play with Jose Ramirez,” Bell said.</p><p>The Guardians had a pesky lineup in 2022. But Josh Naylor’s streaky hitting ability in the cleanup spot provided minimal protection for Jose Ramirez. With Josh Bell set to bat 4th, Ramirez now has legitimate protection behind him in Cleveland’s lineup. Bell’s powerful presence should lead to better pitches to hit for Ramirez in 2023.</p><p>Josh Bell struggled mightily after getting traded from the Washington Nationals to the San Diego Padres last season. However, he hit over .300 in Washington with 14 home runs prior to the trade. The Guardians are banking on Bell performing like he did to start the 2022 campaign.</p><p>Cleveland’s desire to add pop to the lineup behind Jose Ramirez was apparent from day 1 of free agency. In addition to Bell, the Guardians <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/guardians-news-cleveland-doubles-up-on-free-agency-pop-after-josh-bell-deal-with-mike-zunino" rel="noopener">signed</a> power-hitting catcher Mike Zunino. Bell and Zunino’s power will benefit Cleveland’s contact-based hitters such as Steven Kwan and Amed Rosario. With Naylor and All-Star Andres Gimenez in the mix as well, the Guardians suddenly feature a respectable batting order.</p><p>It will be interesting to see how Cleveland fares in 2023. Guardians fans shouldn’t be surprised if Jose Ramirez performs even better next season with legitimate protection surrounding him in the lineup.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Coming off an All-Star campaign in 2021, Zunino slashed just .148/.195/.304 in 2022 to go with only five home runs and 16 RBI across just 123 plate appearances. He went under the knife due to thoracic outlet syndrome which essentially ruled him out for the rest of the year.</p><p>It’s hard to imagine at the moment that Zunino will drastically improve the offense at the catcher position for the Guardians, given his numbers in 2022. Moreover, the Guardians finished just 29th in the majors overall in catcher wRC+ (<a href="https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=c&amp;stats=bat&amp;lg=all&amp;qual=0&amp;type=8&amp;season=2022&amp;month=0&amp;season1=2022&amp;ind=0&amp;team=0,ts&amp;rost=0&amp;age=0&amp;filter=&amp;players=0&amp;startdate=2022-01-01&amp;enddate=2022-12-31&amp;sort=17,d" rel="noopener">55</a>) last season.</p><p>That being said, Zunino is also known for his quality performance behind the plate, which is something the Guardians are looking forward to getting from him once he starts suiting up for them in the 2023 MLB season.</p><p>So far in his MLB career that started in 2013 with the Seattle Mariners, Zunino has batted only .200 and posted a .271 OBP and a .410 SLG to go with 146 home runs and 361 RBI.</p><p>Cleveland’s move to acquire Zunino also comes shortly after the Guardians signed free agent <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-guardians-interested-in-switch-hitting-power-threat-as-free-agency-heats-up" rel="noopener">first baseman</a> Josh Bell.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Cleveland is fresh off of a 2022 playoff appearance but had aspirations of improving the lineup during the offseason. The addition of Bell provides the Guardians with a switch-hitting former All-Star who can provide protection for Jose Ramirez in the lineup.</p><p>The Guardians had <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-guardians-interested-in-switch-hitting-power-threat-as-free-agency-heats-up" rel="noopener">previously been linked</a> to Josh Bell in free agency. But they were also reportedly interested in Jose Abreu before <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/astros-news-jose-abreu-joins-houston-for-2023-world-series-defense-in-free-agency-bombshell" rel="noopener">he signed</a> in Houston with the Astros. But Cleveland’s deal with Bell says a lot about where they believe they stand right now.</p><p>Heading into 2022, their franchise direction was unclear. The Guardians had MLB’s youngest roster and called-up the most rookies to the big leagues during the season. But Cleveland’s youth was not intimidated and ultimately upset the Chicago White Sox to win the AL Central. The Guardians went on to defeat the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL Wild Card Series before getting edged out in 5 games against the New York Yankees in the ALDS.</p><p>But Josh Bell is joining a team with a bright future. Jose Ramirez is a perennial MVP candidate, while players such as Andres Gimenez and Steven Kwan emerged as stars in 2022. Meanwhile, the pitching is amongst the best in baseball with Shane Bieber and Triston McKenzie leading the rotation and Emmanuel Clase headlining the bullpen.</p><p>Josh Bell may not be the only star who ends up joining the Guardians this offseason. Soto is one of the best power hitters in MLB and is fresh off a dominant showing at this year’s Home Run Derby, which he run in impressive fashion. Soto also has one of the league’s highest on-base percentages at .408 with a walk rate of 20.9%.</p><p>Meanwhile, Bell boasts a .301/.384/.493 slash with a 142 wRC+, which is 42% above the league average offensively. Having these two studs in the lineup will have the Padres knocking the ball all across the park at a much better rate. With 35 combined home runs between them this year, the additions of Soto and Bell will undoubtedly improve their scoring averages across the board and give them a much higher on-base percentage. Plus, again, the return of Tatis will also help immensely.</p><p><b>1. Padres will earn a Wild Card spot in the 2022 MLB Playoffs </b></p><p>Things are looking up for the Padres with their 60-46 record, which is good for second place in the NL West and the second spot in the NL Wild Card race, 3.5 games clear of the Philadelphia Phillies and St. Louis Cardinals.
