More fuel has been poured into that subject in light of the injuries of New York Mets <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rumor-could-edwin-diaz-actually-return-from-knee-injury-in-2023" rel="noopener">closer Edwin Diaz</a> and Houston Astros <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/astros-news-jose-altuve-gets-update-after-suffering-thumb-injury" rel="noopener">second baseman Jose Altuve</a> while playing for their respective countries in the tournament. But if you ask Tyler Glasnow of the Tampa Bay Rays, the risk of picking up injuries in the WBC shouldn’t discourage players from wanting to don their national colors.</p><p>In a recent appearance on the Chris Rose Sports, Tyler Glasnow gave his reasoning as to why he is <a href="https://twitter.com/ChrisRoseSports/status/1637835242282131456" rel="noopener">not having any second thoughts</a> about desiring to one day play in the World Baseball Classic.</p><p>“I think because everyone is trying to…our pitchers at this point are going for five innings, right? So would you rather have someone do four or five innings in spring? Or would you have someone do four or five innings in games that matter? To each his own, but there’s no difference,” Tyler Glasnow said. “Both people are trying to get ready for the season. And then one is probably more meaningful in terms of like competition-wise, like it’s a lot more ‘win now’ type environment which could be argued that’s much better for going into a season. The ability to play for your team is insane. If you do only live one life, you kind of have to collect your deathbed tokens and I think looking back on like you having the opportunity to play in World Baseball Classic and you don’t because you’re afraid of whatever when the workloads aren’t the same it doesn’t make sense to me. I think that’s, I’m going to try and play in four years for sure. I think it’s such a meaningful thing to be part of.”</p><p>The next World Baseball Classic will be in 2026, which means Tyler Glasnow will be 34 by then. As long as he remains healthy, he will have that shot of realizing his dream of playing for Team USA the next time the WBC rolls around.</p><p>For now, Tyler Glasnow will look to recover as soon as he can from an oblique injury he suffered while throwing late last February. He will be missing the start of the 2023 MLB season, with the Rays expecting him to be out at least six to eight weeks after the injury.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Rays are unlikely to start acquiring starts by giving them the gigantic bag, so their formula to success will continue to rely on their farm system. They have found gems from their minor league squads, such as Wander Franco, Shane McClanahan, and Randy Arozarena.</p><p>Their division rivals, like the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays, have continued to add supplementary pieces for their 2023 roster. Conversely, Tampa Bay decided to add one pitcher in free agency, Zach Eflin. Guys like Corey Kluber and Kevin Kiermaier have headed out, and the Rays will replace their production through their internal assets. </p><p>As a low-key and under-the-radar organization, it will be an entertaining start for them in 2023 and how they will construct their batting order and pitching staff.</p><h2><b>Rays’ last rotation spot</b></h2><p>The trio of Shane McClanahan, Drew Rasmussen, and Jeffrey Springs had impressive 2022 numbers, and it is inevitable for them to be the top three managers for Kevin Cash. <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/TBR/2022.shtml" rel="noopener">Based</a> on WAR, these three pitchers were the top throwers for the squad. Zach Eflin will likely occupy the fourth spot in the rotation; then, the fifth slot remains to be a question mark because of the oblique injury of strikeout machine Tyler Glasnow.</p><p>The issues with the health of Glasnow continue to be a burden for Tampa Bay, and it will be intriguing to see the adjustments of Cash. Yonny Chirinos or Luis Patiño will likely be the legitimate choices for the fifth starter. Chirinos brings stability and veteran presence, while Patiño is the youngster with immense upside, but the volatility is something to keep an eye on for the pitching coaches.</p><h2><b>Catcher</b></h2><p>The backstop position for the Rays might end up in a timeshare for 2023. The rationale is to keep Francisco Mejia and Christian Bethancourt fresh for the stretch run. Mejia played in more games last season, <a href="https://www.fantasypros.com/2023/03/spring-training-position-battles-american-league-2023-fantasy-baseball/" rel="noopener">but</a> the advanced numbers indicated that Mejia struggled at the plate. In 299 plate appearances, he contributed 70 hits and 28 of them in the extra-base variety. </p><p>Mejia is still 26, so Bethancourt will likely have the edge at the early juncture of the season. Since it is a 162-game season, stability and reliability are instrumental, especially at the start of the season. Bethancourt has been in and out of the MLB, but his return in 2022 was an incredible one to revitalize his career. In 44 games, he hit .255 by tallying seven homers and 15 RBI. It is not set in stone yet, but Bethancourt can claim the starting catcher position.</p><h2><b>Closer</b></h2><p>Manager Kevin Cash has always had a superb bullpen since his first year at the job. The Rays introduced the concept of having an opener in 2018, highlighting their strengths with their relievers on the fold. Furthermore, their bullpen choices have been by committee or matchups rather than having an order on which pitchers are preferred over the others.</p><p>The guesses have been off on other years on the leading saves leader for Tampa Bay, and the likelihood of Peter Fairbanks leading the pack is higher than usual. Fairbanks was signed to an extension in the offseason, and he had close to a 1.00 ERA last year. Even if he only pitched 24 innings last season, Cash decided to utilize him in high-leverage situations, and Fairbanks was still tied for the saves leader with Jason Adam. The competition will be between these two individuals, and Fairbanks seems to be the more composed selection.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Additionally, his five RBIs in one game is the third-most single-game total in the tournament’s history.</p><p>The record for RBIs in a single World Baseball Classic sits at 12, set by the Netherlands’ Wladimir Balentien in 2017. The 31-year-old has already missed over a week of MLB Spring Training action while he deals with a hip flexor injury, and he <a href="https://twitter.com/TriciaWhitaker/status/1634256673198972939" rel="noopener">went down to injury again</a> in Friday’s exhibition game against the Atlanta Braves.</p><p>Diaz had just returned to the lineup after dealing with a hip issue, and now has another issue to deal with. In just his first at-bat of the day, Diaz was hit by a pitch in the hand area and forced to leave the game as a precaution, according to Bally Sports’ Rays sideline reporter Tricia Whitaker.</p><p>“Yandy Diaz back in the line up after a hip issue, now has to leave the game in just his first AB after getting hit by the pitch on what looked to be his hand/wrist area,” she tweeted shortly after he left the game.</p><p>The Rays will be hoping to get their starting 3B healthy by the start of the season, but it’s certainly been a tough MLB Spring Training campaign for the Cuba native.</p><p>Rays manager Kevin Cash said that Diaz would play first base in Friday’s Grapefruit League game, but he didn’t have much of an opportunity to try out the new position.</p><p>Diaz hits atop Tampa’s lineup, gets on base frequently and makes a lot of hard contact for the Florida-based franchise.</p><p>The former Cleveland Indian is coming off a solid 2022 campaign that saw him hit .296 with nine home runs and 71 runs scored.</p><p>Rays’ Yandy Diaz signed a three-year, $24 million contract extension in the offseason and is expected to begin <a href="https://www.fantasypros.com/mlb/news/393253/yandy-diaz-sidelined-with-hip-flexor.php" rel="noopener">Opening Day at first base</a>, but has the ability to play all over the diamond, per Fantasy Pros.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He studied journalism and communication at UConn.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">MLB</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rays-predictions-2023-mlb-season-spring-training" rel="noopener">Tampa Bay Rays</a> starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow suffered <a href="https://twitter.com/TBTimes_Rays/status/1630337815874502656?s=20" rel="noopener">an oblique injury during</a> a live batting practice session on Monday, according to Marc Topkin of Tampa Bay Times.</p><p>Tyler Glasnow will get an MRI done on Tuesday to determine the severity, but it seems certain that he will miss some time, according to Topkin. Glasnow threw about six pitches before walking off of the mound with an athletic trainer.</p><p>The Rays were expecting Glasnow to be a key part of the team’s rotation this season, specifically as the number two guy behind Shane McClanahan. Now with Glasnow suffering an oblique injury, depending on the severity of the injury the Rays could be without him for significant time again. An oblique injury <a href="https://www.mlb.com/glossary/injuries/oblique-strain" rel="noopener">could take months</a> to recover from if it is bad enough, and pitchers typically take as many as 35 days to recover from a grade 1 oblique strain, according to MLB.com.</p><p>Glasnow has had a lot of trouble with injuries in recent seasons. He pitched in 14 games before requiring Tommy John surgery in 2021, and pitched in just two games late in 2022.</p><p>The Rays should go into the season with Shane McClanahan as the number one guy, with Drew Rasmussen, Zach Eflin and Jeffrey Springs each moving up a slot. Candidates to slot into the fifth spot are Luis Patino and Yonny Chirinos.</p><p>The Rays have been known for using their bullpen a lot, but they were expected to have a legitimate starting rotation going into 2023. That could still happen, but it wouldn’t be a shock if they went that route for the fifth spot in the rotation.</p><p>Still, a staff with McClanahan, Drew Rasmussen, Zach Eflin and Jeffrey Springs followed by Luis Patino or Yonny Chirinos should be able to perform well. Then, when the Rays hopefully get Glasnow back, they could have the dominant rotation they envisioned coming into spring training.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

They did so again in 2022, where they made it to the playoffs in a crowded American League East, although they didn’t last long before getting sent home by the Cleveland Guardians in the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/al-wild-card-odds-rays-vs-guardians-series-prediction" rel="noopener">Wild Card round</a>.</p><p>The Rays will enter the 2023 season in a similar spot. They have a lot of young talent on their roster that seems set to continue to develop, and even though the AL East is as competitive as it’s ever been, the Rays seem set to contend for a Wild Card spot once again, or maybe even the top spot in the division if everything breaks their way.</p><p>Spring Training has gotten underway for the Rays, and it’s clear that while there are quite a few star players who deserve fans’ attention, there are also some up-and-coming prospects who could make a name for themselves over the next few weeks. Let’s take a look at three Rays players who fans should pay attention to throughout Spring Training,</p><h2><b>3. Kyle Manzardo</b></h2><p>The Rays have three prospects inside the <a href="https://www.mlb.com/prospects/2022/top100/" rel="noopener">top-100 list</a>, according to MLB.com, but just outside that list falls Kyle Manzardo. Manzardo made a lot of noise in his first season with the Rays organization, and earned an invitation to Spring Training as a result. Manzardo may not make it to the majors this season, but it’s clear he has a ton of potential.</p><p>Manzardo is a smooth-hitting first baseman who has shown the potential to be a real impact hitter in the majors for Tampa Bay. Manzardo split his time between A+ and AA last season, and his numbers were very strong (.327 BA, 22 HR, 81 RBI, 1.043 OPS). Not only was Manzardo raking at the plate, but he nearly walked as many times as he struckout (65:59 K/BB ratio).</p><p>There are some strong hitting prospects around the league, but Manzardo flashed with the Rays last season. He could conceivably start at AAA and make his way to the majors, but he’s still only 22 years old, so Tampa doesn’t necessarily have to rush him. But if he rakes in Spring Training after a strong 2022 campaign, he could end up in the majors at some point this season.</p><h2><b>2. Curtis Mead</b></h2><p>After a strong 2022 campaign, Curtis Mead is on track to find his way to the majors at some point in 2023, so it will be interesting to see what he’s able to accomplish during Spring Training. The Rays could certainly use a versatile infielder who has a strong bat, and that’s precisely what Mead looks to be for them heading into 2023.</p><p>Mead split his time in 2022 between AA and AAA, and played well at both spots. His final numbers on the season are solid (.298 BA, 13 HR, 50 RBI, .922 OPS) and he looks likely to be a guy who could hit .300 with around 20 home runs while playing at second base. Mead can also play third or first base in a pinch, but it seems like the Rays want him at second base for the time being.</p><p>Having a potential middle infield of Mead and Wander Franco at shortstop would make for one of the more exciting young duos in the league. Mead’s position in the field is certainly in flux, but he’s a good enough hitter that it shouldn’t matter where he plays. He likely will start the season in AAA, but if he starts the season in the majors, he could end up making a run for the AL Rookie of the Year award.</p><h2><b>1. Taj Bradley</b></h2><p>The most likely player to make it to the majors in 2023, though, is Taj Bradley, who is the Rays top prospect and one of the best overall pitching prospects in the game. Bradley has already impressed in his first Spring Training action, and while he may not start the season in the majors, it’s a safe bet to expect Bradley to make it there at some point later on in the season.</p><p>Bradley has lit it up at every stop he’s made in the minors, as he spent time at AA and AAA with Mead last season. Bradley’s total numbers are very strong (7-4, 2.57 ERA, 141 K, 1.04 WHIP) although it is worth noting his ERA did jump to 3.66 in AAA after sitting at 1.70 in AA. There’s still room for Bradley to grow despite how good he’s looked early on for the Rays.</p><p>Bradley will turn 22 before the start of the season, so he still has a lot of time, but he’s well on his way to making the majors at some point this season. If he can put together a strong Spring Training, that could help his case even more, making him the top prospect on the Rays that should be watched.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Rays enjoyed another strong campaign in 2022, winning 86 games and making the postseason for the fourth consecutive year.</p><p>However, Tampa Bay endured a quick playoff exit at the hands of the Cleveland Guardians who dispatched them in two games.</p><p>Thus, the Rays entered the offseason looking to figure out how to take that next step in the American League.</p><p>But in typical Rays fashion, the offseason consisted of quiet moves, with the biggest being the free agent signing of former Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Zach Eflin.</p><p>Tampa Bay also agreed to extensions with three key players, pitchers Jeffrey Springs and Pete Fairbanks, as well as infielder Yandy Diaz.</p><p>So, the Rays enter the 2023 MLB season with largely the same roster that pushed them into the playoffs last year.</p><p>Can they make the playoffs and return to the World Series for the first time since the pandemic-shortened 2020 season?</p><p>Or will their relatively quiet offseason catch up to them, as the likes of the New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles pass them by?</p><p>That’s what we’ll discuss here. Without further ado, here are three bold predictions for the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rays-news-tampa-bay-yandy-diaz-closing-in-on-3-year-24-million-contract-extension" rel="noopener">Rays</a> in 2023.</p><h2><b>Rays star Wander Franco Stays Healthy and joins the 20-20 club</b></h2><p>Wander Franco, the former number-one overall prospect in the sport, has yet to play a full season and realize his potential.</p><p>Unfortunately for Franco, both of his seasons that were cut short were out of his control.</p><p>In 2021, the Rays didn’t call him up until June, resulting in him playing in just 70 games.</p><p>In 2022, Franco got off to a hot start but suffered a hamate fracture in his right wrist in July. The Rays star needed surgery and had a delayed rehab assignment, finally returning to the lineup in September.</p><p>Franco is now healthy at Spring Training before the 2023 season, a great sight to see for Rays fans.</p><p>He is one of the more well-rounded players on the team, able to affect the game in the field, at the plate and on the basepaths.</p><p>Franco will stay healthy and put it all together in 2023, hitting over .300 with 20-plus home runs, 20-plus stolen bases and over 100 runs scored for the Rays.</p><h2><b>Shane McClanahan will win the AL Cy Young award </b></h2><p>Shane McClanahan, a first-time All-Star in 2022, looked to be well on his way towards taking home the hardware in the first half of last season, as he carried a 10-3 record, a microscopic 1.71 ERA and 147 strikeouts in 110 2/3 innings pitched into the second half last year.</p><p>He started the All-Star game for the American League.</p><p>But a 4.20 ERA down the stretch, as well as a shoulder injury, derailed what looked like a coronation as the league’s best pitcher.</p><p>Fast forward to 2023 and McClanahan knows what he needs to do. Crick has been around the Majors since 2017, making his MLB debut that year for the San Francisco Giants. After one year in the Bay Area, he landed in Pittsburgh, pitching for the Pirates for four years before spending 2022 with the Chicago White Sox.</p><p>Last season, Crick went 2-0 with a 4.02 ERA in just 15.2 innings, striking out 19 in the process. He missed most of the season due to an elbow injury. The Rays bullpen is rather loaded now after Jason Adam also won his arbitration case Saturday to remain in Tampa. There are no guarantees Crick is going to make the Opening Day roster, but he’s got potential and no shortage of experience.</p><p>The veteran was a first-round pick by the Giants in 2011 and always found himself on top-100 prospect lists. He actually ended up being one of the pieces that went over to the Bucs in the Bryan Reynolds trade from San Francisco. While command is historically a problem for Crick in his career (13.3% walk rate), he does own a 3.56 ERA and shows the ability to strikeout a fair share of batters.</p><p>The Rays are known for their ability to rejuvenate players and perhaps Crick will be the next. McGee began his career with the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/tampa-bay-rays" rel="noopener">Tampa Bay Rays</a> and won a World Series with the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers" rel="noopener">Los Angeles Dodgers</a>.</p><p>It’s with the Rays that McGee wants to end his career. The 36-year-old <a href="https://www.tampabay.com/sports/rays/2023/02/03/rays-jake-mcgee-retire-dodgers-rockies-andrew-friedman-kevin-cash/" rel="noopener">did an interview</a> with the Tampa Bay Times explaining why the Rays organization means so much to him.</p><p>“They were the first team to give me an opportunity,” McGee said. “I was in the organization for 11 years. I know it was (only) six years in the big leagues, but I learned so much.”</p><p>“All the teams were really good when I was there. We were competing for the playoffs every year. And then we lived in Tampa, it was kind of our (fulltime) home for a while. So just being with the organization for all that time,” the former Rays reliever added.</p><p>McGee began his professional career as a starting pitcher in the minors. After becoming a reliever in the big leagues, the 36-year-old pitched to a career 3.71 ERA and 613 strikeouts in 650 appearances.</p><p>Those numbers aren’t world-beating on their own. However, they become more impressive when coupled with the fact that he threw one pitch the majority of the time.</p><p>McGee threw 9585 pitches over the 13 seasons of his career. 90% of those pitches were four-seam fastballs. At one point in his career, the former Rays reliever <a href="https://www.foxsports.com/stories/other/the-predictable-but-unhittable-jake-mcgee" rel="noopener">threw 206 fastballs</a> in a row.</p><p>The 36-year-old could have continued his career. He pitched for six teams and had opportunities to do it again. However, it was simply time to call it a day.</p><p>“I’d rather be at home with my family. I played 13 years. I won a World Series in ‘20. It’s about time to stop,” McGee told the Tampa Bay Times.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Rays typically don’t spend much money in free agency. They operate as a small-market team and prefer to build a roster from the ground up. Players such as Diaz, Fairbanks, and Springs have all contributed in pivotal fashion over the past few years. But Yandy Diaz will help the cause.</p><p>Diaz quietly enjoyed a superb 2022 campaign with the Rays. He slashed .296/.401/.423 with an .824 OPS. Although he only clubbed 9 home runs, Diaz smashed 33 doubles last season. Yandy Diaz also provides an element of defensive versatility given his ability to play third or first base.</p><p>His production tends to get overlooked since he plays in Tampa Bay and doesn’t hit many home runs. But the Rays clearly appreciate everything he brings to the team.
