It’s tough to totally remember given how poorly the second half of his career went, but Harvey was instrumental for the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/buck-showalter-gets-brutally-honest-after-mets-drop-to-the-500-mark" rel="noopener">New York Mets</a> during their 2015 World Series run, and looked to be one of the top young pitchers in the game during this time.</p><p>Unfortunately, Harvey’s career was dealt a roadblock in 2014 when he was forced to undergo Tommy John surgery, and while he had a strong return season in 2015, he was never the same pitcher he was before that major injury. After unsuccessful stints with the Cincinnati Reds, Los Angeles Angels, Kansas City Royals, and Baltimore Orioles, Harvey, who hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2021, opted to <a href="https://twitter.com/JonHeyman/status/1654487035229478919" rel="noopener">call it a career</a> on Friday morning.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">Congrats on your retirement Matt Harvey. His final season with the Orioles, in which he posted a hideous 6.27 ERA over 28 starts, proved just how far Harvey had fallen.</p><p>While his late-career struggles will be tough to overlook, it’s worth remembering just how dominant Harvey was early on in his career. If he could have stayed healthy, things could have gone much differently for the former Mets ace. The former New York Mets ace last pitched in the Majors in 2021 for the Baltimore Orioles, compiling a brutal 6.27 ERA in 28 starts. And while Harvey doesn’t regularly sit in the high 90s anymore, he just proved his worth in the World Baseball Classic with Team Italy, keeping Cuba and the Netherlands at bay as the Italians made it all the way to the quarterfinals before losing to Japan. Harvey tossed seven total innings and surrendered just one run.</p><p>The veteran right-hander <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/03/16/reinvented-matt-harvey-wants-a-shot-at-his-final-mlb-chapter/" rel="noopener">recently spoke</a> to The New York Post and continues to hope he gets another shot in the Majors, referencing Duque Hebbert’s minor league deal with the Detroit Tigers as an example.</p><p>“He’s a little younger. I definitely worked as hard as I can to be in that position. Hopefully someone gives me a chance.”</p><p>Harvey still believes he can get back to the mid-90s with his heater though, despite typically sitting in the 88-91 mph range these days:</p><p>“Obviously I’m not pumping mid-to-upper-90s anymore — at least not yet. Hopefully, the velo comes back. But if it doesn’t, I feel like I still know how to pitch and to get guys out,” Harvey told The Post from Japan. “I’ve worked really hard on a different style of pitching. I feel good. Hopefully the stuff comes back. But I can still pitch. The game is still about getting people out.”</p><p>Although Matt Harvey is no spring chicken anymore, the righty can clearly still get guys out. After all, it’s not all about velocity. He was granted legal immunity but still received the 60 game suspension from MLB. Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer recently was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dodgers-news-trevor-bauer-suspended-2-years-from-mlb/">handed a two-year, 324 game suspension from MLB</a> after the league determined he failed to uphold their Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse Policy.</p><p>Bauer is currently appealing the suspension. Harvey also acknowledged that he used cocaine and both gave and received oxycodone to Skaggs. Skaggs passed away and was found to have opioids in his system, but the belief is that fentanyl was the cause of death. Kay was convicted on two counts of distributing fentanyl that ultimately led to Skaggs’ death.</p><p>Matt Harvey was once a standout pitcher for the New York Mets. He helped the team almost reach the pinnacle of baseball, but lost the World Series to the Kansas City Royals in 2015.</p><p>The first three seasons of Harvey’s career put him on a trajectory toward the Hall of Fame. However, following the 2015 season, his career practically fell off of a cliff. Harvey could not stay healthy the next few years, dealing with numerous arm and shoulder issues. He then bounced around baseball for the last handful of years until he finally landed in Baltimore in 2021. Matt Harvey had a brutal year with the Orioles, going 6-14 with a 6.27 ERA.</p><p>Harvey has not made an appearance for Baltimore this season. While the one-time All-Star was granted legal immunity, he won’t be so fortunate with the MLB, as they announced a strict punishment for Harvey following his opioids admission, <a href="https://www.espn.com.au/mlb/story/_/id/33306094/free-agent-matt-harvey-suspended-mlb-admission-opioid-distribution">via ESPN</a>.</p><blockquote>If Matt Harvey can find a team willing to sign him, he could immediately be suspended for at least 60 days for saying that he provided opioids to Tyler Skaggs on several occasions, a Major League Baseball official told ESPN on Wednesday.</blockquote><p>Per ESPN, Matt Harvey, who is a free agent, will face an immediate 60-day suspension for his admission on opioids in the Tyler Skaggs trial. Harvey’s testimony counts as distribution under the MLB’s drug policy.</p><p>In a statement, the MLB said that a “comprehensive review” of any violations will occur once the Skaggs trial is complete. Harvey will be able to appeal the suspension.</p><p>The 32-year-old was a standout pitcher for the New York Mets during his first three years in the big leagues but struggled to find success after that.</p><p>While Harvey’s opioids admission from the Skaggs trial won’t cost him any legal troubles, it could put a serious wrench in his potential return to the MLB.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
