New York, which announced the signing of former Boston Red Sox pitcher Colten Brewer on Saturday, <a href="https://twitter.com/yankees/status/1642192237206355969?s=12&amp;t=bm8qRt18zuhlXFzV7rKRAQ" rel="noopener">designated</a> Florial for assignment, according to the team’s Twitter account.</p><p>Brewer, 30, was signed to a major league contract and selected to the team’s active roster ahead of their second game of the season against the Giants.</p><p>The right-handed Brewer has spent the last three seasons with the Red Sox, pitching to a 4.98 ERA with 78 strikeouts in 81 1/3 innings pitched during his tenure in Beantown.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yankees-news-aaron-boone-potential-deal-pitcher" rel="noopener">Yankees manager Aaron Boone</a> had indicated that a move for a pitcher would be coming- and Florial was believed to be a candidate to be traded.</p><p>Now that the former no. 6 prospect in the Yankees’ minor league system has been designated for assignment, the club will have seven days to return him to the roster, place him on waivers, trade him or release him.</p><p>Florial could also be outrighted to the minor leagues.</p><p>However, given how much the 25-year-old struggled this spring- a .167 batting average and just seven walks compared to 19 strikeouts- a return to the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yankees-news-aaron-judge-inspired-anthony-volpe-kiss-jersey" rel="noopener">Yankees</a> is unlikely at this point.</p><p>The plate discipline issues were nothing new either, as Florial struggled across three separate stints in the majors from 2020 to 2022.</p><p>Still, the power-speed combo he flashed in the minors could still be of interest to other big-league clubs.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Assuming Whitlock stays healthy through those two starts, April 11 seems like his likely return date, Abraham speculated.</p><p>Garrett Whitlock was placed on the injured list retroactive to March 27 with a hip injury. While he missed Opening Day, Whitlock is poised to make a quick recovery if his rehab starts go to plan.</p><p>The right-hander came to Boston in the 2020 Rule 5 Draft. Since then, Whitlock has gone on to make 77 appearances for the Red Sox, pitching to a 2.73 ERA with a 163/32 K/BB ratio. The Red Sox rewarded Whitlock with a four-year, almost $19 million <a href="https://twitter.com/ChrisCotillo/status/1513188949920997379" rel="noopener">contract extension</a> prior to this season.</p><p>Originally, Whitlock came to the team as a relief pitcher. The 29-year-old rookie from Japan went 2-for-4 at the plate, scoring a run and driving in one as well.</p><p>While the brisk early-spring New England weather didn’t seem to impact Yoshida’s play, he certainly felt the chill.</p><p>“It was very cold, but my heart was burning,” Yoshida <a href="https://twitter.com/alexspeier/status/1641562253148278784?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1641562253148278784%7Ctwgr%5E1e6ba4b3bd5c016db541fe99f20cfbdc030ab2da%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Ffansided.com%2F2023%2F03%2F30%2Fmasataka-yoshida-quote-red-sox-debut%2F" rel="noopener">said after the game.</a></p><p>Talk about firing up the Beantown faithful. As if his play wasn’t enough to win the hearts of Red Sox fans, that quote certainly adds fuel to the flames.</p><p>The Red Sox turned a lot of heads when they signed Yoshida to a five-year, $90 million contract last December. Boston also had to pay a posting fee of $15.4 million to Yoshida’s former team the Orix Buffaloes, putting the total cost for his services north of $100 million.</p><p>Yoshida was a four-time all-star in Nippon Professional Baseball, Japan’s top league. He also helped Japan win its third World Baseball Classic title this March, earning a spot on the All-WBC team for his efforts.</p><p>It may take a bit for Masataka Yoshida to establish himself as an all-star player in the MLB. It took him almost no time to engrain himself into Boston sports lore. Red Sox fans may have found their new favorite player.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/red-sox-news-chris-sale-gets-overly-optimistic-report-as-he-battles-back-from-injury" rel="noopener">lifelong Boston Red Sox fan</a> has a friendship with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/astros-news-jose-altuve-gets-major-injury-update-after-thumb-surgery" rel="noopener">Houston Astros star Alex Bregman</a>, which blossomed from Bregman’s recent postseason performances against the New York Yankees.</p><p>Wahlberg, who gave the famous “Play Ball”  in Houston before the Astros’ Opening Day game, <a href="https://twitter.com/MarkBermanFox26/status/1641552966057443331" rel="noopener">was asked about</a> his relationship with Bregman.</p><p>“First and foremost he’s an amazing guy, but he’s also my favorite Yankee killer of all time,” Wahlberg said.</p><p>Mark Berman, who asked the initial question, then asked Wahlberg about Bregman trying to turn him into an Astros fan.</p><p>“I am an Astros fan. I’m a fan of real talent,” Wahlberg said. “(The Astros) have an amazing team and (Bregman) is an amazing talent.”</p><p>Red Sox fans may not like that latter statement from Marky Mark, but at least he took a shot at the Yankees in the process.</p><p>Wahlberg’s newfound love for the Astros didn’t stop there. He said that he’s willing to donate one of his thumbs to Jose Altuve, who starts the season on the injured list after fracturing his thumb in the World Baseball Classic.</p><p>Wahlberg is admittedly a huge baseball fan, so getting to take part in the pregame festivities for the defending World Series champions must be a big deal to him, although he probably wishes it was for his beloved Red Sox.</p><p>Following celebrity-athlete relationships is a niche for some people. However, Sale is back and healthy again, with even one Red Sox prospect saying that the veteran pitcher is on his way <a href="https://nesn.com/2023/03/red-sox-who-spent-spring-training-with-chris-sale-confident-in-resurgence/" rel="noopener">to a major comeback</a>.</p><p>“Oh, 110%,” Red Sox prospect Bryan Mata said, per Sean T. In 2022, Sale made just two appearances which saw him log in a total of only 5.2 innings on the mound.</p><p>Now that he’s seemingly healthy, Chris Sale will carry the pressure to deliver for the Red Sox as part of a rotation that also features Corey Kluber, Tanner Houck, Kutter Crawford, and Nick Pivetta. In 2022m, the Red Sox were just 22nd and 19th in the majors in terms of starters ERA and FIP, respectively.</p><p>The Red Sox will open their 2023 MLB season with Kluber taking the mound against the Baltimore Orioles Thursday. Expectations are not too high for the Red Sox 2023 season, but there are some components that can come together for the team to be a surprise playoff contender.</p><p>The loss of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/red-sox-news-rafael-devers-sounds-off-on-continuing-xander-bogaerts-legacy-after-padres-move" rel="noopener">Xander Bogaerts</a> frustrated many Red Sox fans, but the team did give Rafael Devers a long-term extension and sign Japanese outfielder <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/beantown-rundown-red-sox-participants-world-baseball-classic-offer-signs-optimism" rel="noopener">Masataka Yoshida</a>. Many have questions about the starting rotation, and it is hard to blame them. There is a recipe for the Red Sox offense to be very good, and that could be a reason they have a good start once Opening Day gets here.</p><p>With Opening Day approaching, Boston’s roster is taking shape, and we have an idea of what needs to happen for a successful Red Sox 2023 season.</p><h2>Masataka Yoshida wins the American League Rookie of the Year award</h2><p>Masataka Yoshida is the biggest addition to the Red Sox this season. Many questioned Boston giving him a five-year $90 million contract, but nearly every projection system has Yoshida as a very strong bat for the Red Sox. It is easy to see why after his performance in the World Baseball Classic.</p><p>According to Fangraphs, Yoshida <a href="https://www.fangraphs.com/players/masataka-yoshida/31837/stats?position=OF" rel="noopener">is projected</a> to have a .302 batting average with a .372 on-base percentage and 18 home runs. He is also projected to have a 138 wRC+, which means he would be 38% better than the league-average hitter.</p><p>There are some other contenders for the American League Rookie of the Year, like Gunnar Henderson and Anthony Volpe, but Yoshida can definitely win the award if he puts everything together.</p><h2>Rafael Devers has his best season</h2><p>Rafael Devers had the <a href="https://www.fangraphs.com/players/rafael-devers/17350/stats?position=3B" rel="noopener">best season</a> of his career in 2022, posting a .295 batting average, .358 on-base percentage, 140 wRC+ and a 4.9 WAR, according to Fangraphs. His previous career high was 6.7 in the 2019 season.</p><p>Devers signed a 10-year, $313.5 million contract extension this offseason, keeping him with the Red Sox long-term. It did not quiet all of the frustration that came after a disappointing season in 2022 season and Bogaerts signing with the San Diego Padres, but it’s was a must for the fanbase.</p><p>The scary thing with Devers is that he is only just approaching his prime. His 2019 season came when he was 22 years old. He is entering his age 26 season. The Red Sox are depending on him to be the best hitter in the lineup, and he very well should be. It will be hard to beat out Shohei Ohtani for the MVP award in the American League, but Devers’ best season should have him in the top three. Fresh off a contract extension, expect a huge season from Devers.</p><h2>The starting rotation is the downfall</h2><p>Red Sox fans have reason to believe that the offense could be good, and that should give them plenty of entertainment this season. However, the starting pitching just has so many question marks. Corey Kluber is the Opening Day starter, and can be a solid arm, but he has injury concerns. He pitched <a href="https://www.fangraphs.com/players/corey-kluber/2429/stats?position=P" rel="noopener">in 31 games</a> last season for the Tampa Bay Rays, but that was his first time pitching 30 or more games since the 2018 season with Cleveland. It is tough to know how his body will react coming off of his heaviest workload in a long time.</p><p>Chris Sale is a good pitcher, when he is on the field. The health is once again the question with him. Even if he is healthy, he is not the pitcher he was in 2017 and 2018 with Boston. Nick Pivetta, Tanner Houck and Kutter Crawford are not very inspiring names either.</p><p>The Red Sox will have to piece things together with their rotation, and being in the American League East with the New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays, that is a recipe for disaster.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

I have been a lifelong fan of the major professional teams in Boston, and love discussing all topics surrounding those teams.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Editorials</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/red-sox-biggest-questions-need-answers-2023-opening-day" rel="noopener">Boston Red Sox</a> will be kicking off their 2023 campaign next Thursday on March 30th, but it doesn’t seem like many folks care. In fairness, the Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins are on absolute fire, and the New England Patriots are in the middle of beefing up their roster this offseason. As for the Red Sox, well, expectations aren’t exactly high for them in 2023.</p><p>After a lifeless offseason in which the front office’s only move that seemed to indicate a desire to win was the <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/rafael-devers-red-sox-extension" rel="noopener">long-term extension</a> for Rafael Devers, Boston seems set for a disappointing 2023 campaign. Not only is their roster devoid of star talent after losing players like Xander Bogaerts, J.D. Martinez, and Nathan Eovaldi in free agency, but they play in maybe the most competitive division in the MLB in the American League East.</p><p>It makes sense as to why it’s so tough to get invested in the Red Sox right now, but maybe there are reasons for optimism that we are ignoring. Boston had a handful of players participate in the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/world-baseball-classic-news-shohei-ohtani-gets-100-real-epic-pregame-speech-before-japan-takes-down-usa" rel="noopener">World Baseball Classic</a>, and for the most part, the players that took part in the tournament shined for the Sox. Could this be a sign that the Sox may actually be better than expected in 2023?</p><h2>The Red Sox representatives at the World Baseball Classic stood out</h2><p>Even if you didn’t pay full attention to the World Baseball Classic, it was tough to completely miss the damage that Boston’s players were doing in the tournament. Whether it was big name stars or players competing for a spot in the majors, it seemed like someone of the Red Sox was making a vital contribution in every game played.</p><p>For the most part, everyone that Boston had performing in the tournament was a position player. The only two pitchers of theirs to actually take the hill for the nations they represented were Richard Bleier for Israel and Rio Gomez for Colombia. Bleier picked up a win while pitching a clean 2.2 innings, while Gomez only allowed one walk in his 1.1 innings pitched, so both were solid in their limited action.</p><p>At the plate, though, some of the hottest players in the entire event were Red Sox players. We should probably start with the standout player of the WBC for Boston in Masataka Yoshida. The Sox signed Yoshida from Japan this offseason for a fairly expensive five-year, $90 million contract that has been panned for much of the offseason.</p><p>Yet Yoshida looked pretty great while leading Japan to the championship over Team USA. Yoshida was a madman for Japan in their seven games (.409 BA, 2 HR, 13 RBI, 1.258 OPS), and had one of the highlights of the tournament when he hit a game-tying three-run home run in Japan’s semi-final contest against Mexico. The World Baseball Classic isn’t necessarily equivalent to the MLB, but Yoshida certainly silenced some of his critics with a strong performance for Japan.</p><p>Surprisingly enough, Boston’s second best player in the tournament was Yu Chang, who likely won’t even start the season in the majors for the Sox. Playing for Chinese Taipei, Chang was a force in his four games (.438 BA, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 1.438 OPS) and certainly caught some attention in Boston. With question marks at first base, Chang remains an intriguing option moving forward.</p><p>Another extremely encouraging performance came courtesy of Enrique Hernandez with Puerto Rico. Hernandez’s numbers aren’t as dominant as Yoshida’s or Chang’s (.300 BA, 0 HR, 4 RBI, .791 OPS) but after a down year in 2022, it was great to see Hernandez look more like the 2021 version of himself that completely took over the playoffs for the Sox.</p><p>Ironically, Boston’s top two players in the tournament in Rafael Devers and Alex Verdugo were the quietest of the bunch. Devers hit just .125 in four games, and while Verdugo wasn’t much better, hitting just .130 for Mexico, his hits always seemed to be timely, as he drove in four runs along the way. Despite their poor play, there’s not really any reason to be concerned about either of these guys heading into the regular season.</p><p>You certainly can’t overanalyze the results or statistics from the World Baseball Classic, but it was a change of pace to see folks on the Sox playing so well in the tournament. Could this translate to the 2023 regular season? Who knows, but the early negative narratives surrounding this team simply may not be true.</p><p>This isn’t to say that the Red Sox are going to go out and win their division, but it’s not totally out of the picture to suggest they could be a Wild Card team. There would certainly be a lot that would have to go their way, but as we just saw at the World Baseball Classic, there are some talented players on Boston’s roster. With some early doubts having been cast aside, it’s safe to say that there’s a bit more reason for optimism surrounding the 2023 Red Sox squad.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Granted, you can never make too much of what you see in Spring Training, but after a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/red-sox-riskiest-mlb-offseason-move" rel="noopener">dreary offseason</a> left many fans expecting the worst for the Red Sox, they have shown in Spring Training that maybe things aren’t as bad as they seem.</p><p>That doesn’t mean that Boston should be expected to make anything out of their 2023 campaign. They play in arguably the most competitive division in the MLB in the American League East, and their roster looks like a jumbled mess heading into the season. They have talent all over the roster, but figuring out how to put all the pieces of the puzzle together will be key.</p><p>For better or worse, the Red Sox have answered some important questions surrounding their team since the conclusion of the 2022 campaign. But as Spring Training begins to wind down, and the regular season nears, there are still some big questions surrounding this team. So with that in mind, let’s take a look at three biggest questions that Boston still needs to address before Opening Day rolls around.</p><h2><b>3. How big of an impact will the Red Sox injuries have on their roster construction?</b></h2><p>While the Red Sox have won a lot in Spring Training, they have also been dealing with a rash of injuries along the way. Some of their guys are finally finding their way back to the field, but it looks like Boston could end up beginning the season shorthanded at a few key spots thanks to the injuries they have suffered.</p><p>With the pitching staff, potential starters in Garrett Whitlock, Brayan Bello, and James Paxton all could miss the start of the season due to injuries they have picked up. When it comes to building the starting rotation to begin the season (more on that in a minute) this makes things even trickier, especially considering how many starters Boston has at their disposal when fully healthy.</p><p>The Red Sox have seen their infield get beat up pretty early on too. Trevor Story obviously won’t play for most, if not all, of the 2023 campaign, and his supposed replacement, Adalberto Mondesi, isn’t going to be ready for the start of the season. Justin Turner has been working his way back after getting <a href="https://nesn.com/2023/03/red-sox-injuries-alex-cora-delivers-positive-update-on-justin-turner/" rel="noopener">hit in the face</a> with a pitch, and Connor Wong could suit up again before Spring Training ends, but it seems like the injuries Boston is dealing with will play a role in how their initial roster looks.</p><h2><b>2. Who will be filling out the Red Sox starting rotation?</b></h2><p>Following up on the Red Sox injuries, their starting rotation has a ton of question marks right now. When fully healthy, the Sox had seven guys competing for five spots. It helps having guys like Whitlock and Tanner Houck who can pitch out of the bullpen (and realistically, that’s where they belong) but that’s a discussion for another time.</p><p>Right now, the locks in the rotation are Corey Kluber (who is the team’s Opening Day starter, for whatever reason), Chris Sale, and Nick Pivetta. Houck, who spent most of the 2022 season operating as the Sox closer, may be forced back into the rotation due to necessity, with Boston’s coaching staff wanting to utilize him in that role anyways.</p><p>Houck could always get switched back to the bullpen later once other guys get healthy, but even then, there’s still one spot left for someone to fill in. That leaves Kutter Crawford and Josh Winckowski as the best options to fill in the final spot while the team waits for everyone to get healthy. It’s not ideal, but it seems like it will have to do for the time being.</p><h2><b>1. Who will be hitting leadoff for the Red Sox?</b></h2><p>Ever since trading away Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Red Sox have had a leadoff hitter problem. They thought they found the solution in Enrique Hernandez after his scorching hot 2021 postseason, but he struggled mightily in 2022. He could still be the guy in 2023, but it seems like this is a question we won’t have an answer to until the season gets underway.</p><p>It seemed like Boston’s top free-agent signing in Masataka Yoshida would be a top option for the role, but the Sox apparently want him hitting second instead of first. That leaves Hernandez, Alex Verdugo, Triston Casas, and maybe Christian Arroyo as the top options to lead off in the lineup. Whichever way you cut it, there doesn’t seem to be a great option here.</p><p>Having a strong table-setter is an important piece of baseball nowadays, and over the past few seasons, Boston has struggled to find a true leadoff hitter to get things started for the rest of the lineup. It’s still an issue that plagues this team, and as a result, it will be very interesting to see who manager Alex Corea pencils into the leadoff spot when Boston’s season gets underway.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The star third baseman will continue playing with the Boston Red Sox but will have a new infield neighbor after Xander Bogaerts left Boston for the San Diego Padres.</p><p>Devers is expected to be a leader for the Red Sox and is looking to <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/35857231/mlb-2023-rafael-devers-leader-boston-red-sox" rel="noopener">build on what Bogaerts left behind</a>, according to Joon Lee of ESPN. Although the 26-year-old admitted he doesn’t see himself as a leader right now, he wants to continue the “legacy”  that his former Boston star had created over his decade there.</p><p>“Everything, I learned from him,” Devers said, via ESPN. “He created the environment here. I just want to keep that alive. He was somebody we all respected and I just want to continue that legacy within the clubhouse.”</p><p>Rafael Devers’ teammates have noticed the influence Xander Bogaerts has had on Devers. Utility infielder Christian Arroyo that said the Red Sox star is always happy and that he is “not one of those guys where just because he signed a big contract he’s going to work harder or less hard now. He’s been the same way since I’ve met him, and I think he’s learned a lot of that from [Bogaerts].”</p><p>The Red Sox will certainly need Devers to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/why-rafael-devers-move-saves-red-sox-disappointing-offseason" rel="noopener">continue his slugging ways</a> but aside from that, they will really need him to be there for teammates to lean on. The team is dealing with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/red-sox-news-alex-cora-justin-turner-opening-day-injury-update" rel="noopener">a ton of injuries</a> and coming off of a last-place finish in the AL East. Digging out of the basement starts with positivity and Boston needs Devers to be a main source of it.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
