He will miss three to four weeks and isn’t expected to rejoin the team until just before the All-Star break.</p><p>Alonso took a <a href="https://twitter.com/nypostsports/status/1666597465687052289" rel="noopener">97 mph fastball to the lower forearm</a> from Atlanta Braves veteran Charlie Morton on Wednesday. He exited the game, and initial X-Rays came back negative, but further testing Thursday revealed the bad news.</p><p>Things are now going from bad to worse for New York, which is in the midst of a highly-disappointing season. The Mets have lost six straight and now lose their team leader in home runs, RBI, and WAR.</p><p>Alonso is one of the lone bright spots on this team at the moment, and the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mets-news-rob-manfred-addresses-problem-steve-cohen-new-york-375-million-payroll" rel="noopener">Mets $370 million payroll</a> continues to look like a bad investment.</p><p>In the first game of New York’s series in Atlanta, Alonso took Braves starter Bryce Elder deep in the third inning, then proceeded to talk some trash from the dugout, urging Elder to “please, throw it again.”</p><p>Wednesday, when Morton’s fastball came inside, the Atlanta crowd cheered as <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/braves-news-atlanta-fans-classless-applause-mets-pete-alonso-hit-by-pitch" rel="noopener">Pete Alonso went down</a>. Alonso said that was probably a “consequence” of his banter from the dugout, but he said it’s all in the spirit of friendly competition.</p><p>In his postgame interview, Alonso also said that Morton found him after the game and apologized. While nothing is officially confirmed just yet, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mets-news-new-york-receives-pete-alonso-injury-update-after-exiting-vs-braves" rel="noopener">Guillorme seems to be</a> Alonso’s replacement when he hits the injured list.</p><p>Alonso is dealing with a wrist injury after being hit with a pitch against the Atlanta Braves. He has already returned to New York to undergo more testing. The Mets fear that he will miss time and will be forced to hit the injured list.</p><p>Moving forward, Mark Vientos is poised to see the most time at first base in Alonso’s absence. One of the team’s top prospects, Vientos has appeared in 12 games since his call up to the majors. He has struggled at the dish, hitting .188 with a home run and four RBI. However, the Mets didn’t call him up to sit on the bench. His playing time should only be amplified with Alonso out.</p><p>Still, Luis Guillorme should fill a role on the Mets infield. He is no stranger to New York, appearing in 307 games since joining the Mets in 2018. While he is fine defensively, Guillorme has hit .264 with four home runs and 42 RBI during his tenure.</p><p>The Mets will have a hard time truly replacing Pete Alonso, even with Vientos. Alas, here the Mets are, languishing in fourth place in the NL East standings, with their nemesis Atlanta Braves starting to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mets-news-brandon-nimmo-slaps-ny-with-truth-bomb-about-braves-dominating-the-rivalry" rel="noopener">create more of a separation</a> in the division. And their circumstances may have taken a turn for the worse after an unfortunate development regarding first baseman Pete Alonso’s wrist.</p><p>According to Will Sammon of The Athletic, Alonso may be <a href="https://twitter.com/WillSammon/status/1667162148861104129" rel="noopener">headed to the injured list</a>, further compounding the Mets’ woes.</p><p>Pete Alonso was hit by a pitch squarely on the wrist early on in the second game of the Mets’ three-game series against the Braves, forcing the 28-year old slugger to exit the contest. The early reports regarding Alonso’s wrist <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mets-news-new-york-receives-pete-alonso-injury-update-after-exiting-vs-braves" rel="noopener">were positive</a>, with manager Buck Showalter <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mets-news-buck-showalter-drops-optimistic-pete-alonso-injury-update" rel="noopener">even holding out hope</a> that the Mets first baseman is healthy for when they take on the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday.</p><p>But clearly, further testing did not reveal a promising prognosis, which could knock him out for at least the next 10 days.</p><p>Alonso has been mostly himself this season, remaining as one of the more reliable power hitters in the entire league despite the Mets’ struggles. The 28-year old first baseman has smacked 22 home runs in 261 plate appearances, slashing a very solid .231/.326/.546 which is <a href="https://www.fangraphs.com/players/pete-alonso/19251/stats?position=1B" rel="noopener">good for a 1.8 WAR</a>, per Fangraphs.</p><p>The Mets, which have been a mediocre offensive team this season (ranking 16th in runs per game), may find it difficult to replace Alonso’s production for the next week or so if he does indeed land on the injured list. During his absence in the Mets’ heartbreaking 13-10 loss to the Braves on Thursday, the team turned to Mark Vientos to fill the void at first base, and the results weren’t pretty.</p><p>Vientos <a href="https://www.fangraphs.com/players/mark-vientos/22184/stats?position=DH" rel="noopener">hasn’t really managed</a> to translate his hitting acumen to the big leagues, as he looks like a Quad-A player at the moment. And with the Mets needing to gain ground in the standings, giving too many plate appearances to Vientos may not be ideal. Buck Showalter says he is still hopeful Alonso plays tomorrow in Pittsburgh.</p><p>— Mike Puma (@NYPost_Mets) <a href="https://twitter.com/NYPost_Mets/status/1666920609123557378?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">June 8, 2023</a></p></blockquote><p><script async="" src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p></figure><p>Despite Alonso’s departure from Atlanta, Mets manager Buck Showalter <a href="https://twitter.com/NYPost_Mets/status/1666920609123557378" rel="noopener">is optimistic</a> that the slugger will be in the lineup Friday night when the Mets play the Pirates in Pittsburgh.</p><p>The manager explained that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/braves-news-bryce-elder-pete-alonso" rel="noopener">the Mets</a> wanted to have the team’s medical staff get a good look at the wrist before any other actions are taken. “I think we’d rather have our people look at it. We had plans for him to have the scan this morning anyway, just to be on the safe side.”</p><p>Alonso is the major league’s leader in home runs with 22 blasts. He nailed a home run on Tuesday night off of Atlanta’s Bryce Elder, and the slugger allegedly yelled at Elder to “throw it again” after he got back to the dugout.</p><p>The following night, Pete Alonso was struck by a 96-mile per hour Charlie Morton fastball in the first inning. After the game, Morton came to the Mets lockerroom and offered his apology to Alonso.</p><p>“He was looking for me,” Alonso said. “He just wanted to apologize. Obviously he didn’t mean to. For people speculating for this or that, I just wanted to clear that.</p><p>In addition to his home run total, Alonso is leading the National League with 49 runs batted in. I don’t care what he did last night, cheering getting hit is bush league and ridiculous.”</p><p>The Braves and Mets have a fierce divisional rivalry with a history of controversy. Just last night, Alonso was seen chirping the Braves dugout after blasting a two-run shot in the third inning. The Mets squandered their early lead and were defeated by that same score.</p><p>The Mets and Braves will wrap up this series on Thursday night, and will have many more hotly contested games throughout the summer as they vie for the NL East crown.</p><p>UPDATE: <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mets-news-new-york-receives-pete-alonso-injury-update-after-exiting-vs-braves" rel="noopener">X-rays came back negative</a> for Pete Alonso after suffering wrist contusion when hit by pitch.
