The early 2010s were owned by the Giants, but the last eight seasons have been mostly disappointing for baseball fans in the Bay Area. Two playoff appearances since that last championship have resulted in just one advancement in the postseason (a win in the 2016 NL Wild Card game). Despite a lack of recent success, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/joc-pedersons-7-word-take-on-potential-for-giants-in-2023-season-will-fire-up-fans" rel="noopener">the Giants were serious players</a> for big-ticket free agents Aaron Judge and Carlos Correa this offseason.</p><p>Outside of a surprise 107-win season in 2021, the Giants do not have a winning season across the last six years. Coming off a .500 season last year, San Francisco is projected to finish right around the same mark in 2023. With the Los Angeles Dodgers as heavy favorites again in the NL West, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/giants-position-battles-watch-spring-training" rel="noopener">do the Giants have</a> enough to secure one of the three wild card spots in the National League and make a return to the postseason?</p><h2>3. Who will be the clean-up hitter?</h2><p>Power is the name of the game in this era of baseball. Fans love the long ball, and while it’s possible to win without it, the numbers don’t lie. Eight of the 12 playoff teams last season were top 10 in the league in home runs.</p><p>The Giants finished 13th in the league in homers last season, but only one player had more than 20 (Joc Pederson led the team with 23). Furthermore, only Pederson and Wilmer Flores had 70 or more RBIs.</p><p>The team power numbers were above average, but having a reliable player who consistently drives in runs can make or break a team’s season. Unfortunately for the Giants, there is no obvious choice for manager Gabe Kapler in terms of a four-hole hitter.</p><p>Newly signed outfielder Michael Conforto should be the leading candidate for the spot. Conforto has a career .791 OPS in 534 at-bats in the clean-up spot. He also averaged 29 home runs and 81 RBIs from 2017-2019.</p><p>Conforto missed the entire 2022 season rehabbing from offseason shoulder surgery, and the Giants are taking somewhat of a gamble bringing his services to San Francisco.</p><p>If Conforto can get back to his hitting ways prior to the surgery though, his two-year* deal could be seen as a bargain.</p><h2>2. Will an everyday first baseman emerge?</h2><p>Baseball fans may do a double-take this season when they look at the first few Giants lineups and don’t see Brandon Belt’s name. After 12 seasons in San Francisco, Belt left the Giants to join the Toronto Blue Jays this offseason.</p><p>Now the Giants look to replace Belt at first base and they have some intriguing options. With that, it’s most likely that there will be a carousel of players at the right corner of the infield.</p><p>Versatility can make a player much more valuable, and if the Giants have nothing else, it’s versatile players who can play multiple positions. Last season, the Giants had five different players play 10 or more games at multiple positions.</p><p>Three of those players, Wilmer Flores, Lamonte Wade Jr. and J.D. Davis, appeared 14 or more times at first base. The three of them will likely split time at first, with Flores and Davis bouncing around the infield.</p><p>Wade Jr. has the best chance to take a grasp on the job. With the additions of Conforto and Mitch Haniger, as well as <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/giants-news-joc-pederson-could-help-replace-brandon-belt-in-2023" rel="noopener">the re-signing of Joc Pederson,</a> Wade Jr. may not get as much playing time in the outfield this season.</p><p>If he wants to be in the everyday lineup, getting his numbers up at the plate while playing a solid defensive first base may be his best chance.</p><h2>1. Can Logan Webb be the ace of the Giants rotation?</h2><p>With the departure of Carlos Rodón to the New York Yankees, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/giants-news-sergio-romo-to-retire-with-san-francisco" rel="noopener">the Giants will turn</a> to a different face to lead the pitching staff in 2023. Luckily for the Giants, they already have someone on the roster from last season that should be able to slot into the role just fine.</p><p>Logan Webb is one of the most underrated pitchers in baseball and is slated to be the next Giants ace, and rightfully so. Following a breakout season in 2021 (3.03 ERA, 9.6 strikeouts per nine innings in 26 starts), Webb proved it wasn’t a fluke in 2022.</p><p>Last season, Webb made 32 starts, accumulating a 2.90 ERA (seventh-best in the NL), and won 15 games with 19 quality starts. Though his strikeout numbers were down a bit from 2021, Webb was an innings eater for the Giants in 2022, going at least six innings in 20 of his 32 starts.</p><p>Perhaps most impressively though, the Giants won 40 of the 58 games Webb started over the last two seasons.</p><p>For the second straight season, Webb will be the Opening Day starter for the San Francisco Giants. No longer in the shadow of Rodón, this season could be the year Logan Webb turns into a bonafide ace and is firmly recognized among the elite starting pitchers in Major League Baseball.</p><p>*Note: Michael Conforto has an opt-out in his contract after this season if he has at least 350 plate appearances.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Giants must now move past that and focus on the 2023 season. Even if they are far from their 107-win season in 2021, this club must emulate and replicate some of the terrific performances from that year.</p><p>San Francisco’s front office did make some notable moves despite not getting the big fish, adding two power-hitting outfielders in Mitch Haniger and Michael Conforto while also acquiring pitchers Ross Stripling, Sean Manaea, and Taylor Rogers.</p><p>The Giants lack the superstar-caliber players to propel themselves to World Series contender status. The NL West is arguably one of the strongest divisions in baseball, so it will be interesting to see if San Francisco can compete with the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres. As Spring Training continues, here are some of the ongoing Giants position battles to watch.</p><h2><b>Starting rotation</b></h2><p>Ever since last decade, San Francisco has relied heavily on its pitching and keeping the score at a low number. They were never the most talented bunch, but they found a way to scrap and claw their way to critical victories. That will be a similar case for this year as they added several pitchers who have crowded their staff. The bullpen is a vastly different discussion, but it is ideal for sticking to the starters for the Giants.</p><p>Logan Webb will continue being the No. 1 guy for San Francisco, along with the old reliables, namely Alex Cobb, Ross Stripling, and Sean Manaea. That leaves the Giants one open spot, which Anthony DeSclafani, Jakob Junis, or Alex Wood can fill. Manager Gabe Kapler has the dilemma of starting the season with five or six starters, and then he must decide who will be the long relief pitchers from the bullpen.</p><h2><b>Catcher</b></h2><p>Giants fans miss franchise cornerstone and superstar Buster Posey. He was an elite backstop who could play at that position every night. Before his retirement, the expectation was for the ascension of young stud Joey Bart. The problem is that his game has yet to translate into the majors, creating a logjam at catcher in Spring Training. </p><p>Bart was sent down last June because of his struggles at the plate, so the coaching staff was more comfortable utilizing Austin Wynns at the latter juncture of the season. The market for catchers in the offseason was stale, so they could not chase a player who would swing the tide for them. Two-time Gold Glove winner Roberto Perez is also in the race for the starting catcher slot, along with Blake Sabol, who has been impressive in Spring Training.</p><h2><b>Corner infield</b></h2><p>Brandon Belt and Evan Longoria have gone their separate ways and left their first and third base positions, respectively. The versatility of LaMonte Wade Jr. will likely put him as the starter in first base. Wade was a crowd darling two years ago, but he must rectify many issues from his 2022 performance. The first base options are clearer compared to who will start as the primary third baseman.</p><p>One choice is the youngster David Villar, who was phenomenal in the minors before he was promoted. The essential part is that his production must translate into the majors to grab the starting spot. If he continues to struggle, someone like J.D. Davis or Wilmer Flores can also play the corner outfield positions. </p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He is expected to be shut down for the next week due to the knee injury. He will be reevaluated next week and San Francisco will then determine whether or not he will need to miss an extended period of time.</p><p>The 36-year old has been with the Giants since the 2011 campaign. Brandon Crawford, Buster Posey and Brandon Belt were previously the faces of the team, however, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/giants-news-buster-posey-to-retire-on-thursday" rel="noopener">Posey retired</a> prior to last season and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/blue-jays-news-toronto-agrees-deal-ex-giants-all-star-mlb-free-agency" rel="noopener">Belt signed in Toronto</a> with the Blue Jays this past offseason. Crawford is one of the final remaining players still on the team from San Francisco’s magical 2010-2014 run, where they won three World Series championships in a five-year span. Crawford, who debuted in 2011, played a pivotal role in two of those championships.</p><p>Brandon Crawford is a three-time All-Star as well. He last made the All-Star team in 2021, but struggled to stay on the field in 2022. He slashed .231/.308/.344 with a .652 OPS over just 118 games last season. Crawford is hoping to bounce back in 2023, but that will be difficult to do if he deals with another injury-plagued campaign. The Giants are certainly hopeful that Crawford will not need to miss a significant amount of time due to this knee ailment.</p><p>The Giants come into 2023 in an uncertain position. They will have an outside chance of competing for an NL Wild Card spot, but their odds of vying for the NL West title are slim. Thus, they chased Aaron Judge and Carlos Correa but failed to capitalize on this rare opportunity.</p><p>The Judge sweepstakes were tough because it seemed his mind was set on staying in New York, so it was more of with the Correa negotiations where the lapses occurred. Losing him to the Minnesota Twins was tough, but the front office quickly executed contingency plans. They signed two terrific outfielders, Mitch Haniger and Michael Conforto, and two veteran pitchers, Ross Stripling, and Sean Manaea.</p><p>It is expected for the Giants to be third or fourth in the deep NL West, so it will be insurmountable for them to clinch another playoff berth. To catch a ton of eyeballs surprised, these are a couple of names that must shock the world in 2023.</p><h2><b>Michael Conforto</b></h2><p>A one-time All-Star in 2017 is heading to the Bay Area for 2023. Michael Conforto missed the 2022 season because he suffered a shoulder injury in the offseason. Ironically, he rejected the qualifying offer of his previous team, the New York Mets, because he was stuck without the team for the whole year.</p><p>The Giants decided to take a gamble on his track record of being a reliable power hitter, and he will likely be in the heart of the order with the likes of Joc Pederson and Mitch Haniger. The last campaign of Conforto in 2021 was subpar for him as he only contributed 14 HR, 55 RBI, and a .232 batting average in 125 games.</p><p>Thus, he must prove he is still a force on the plate with his new squad. <a href="https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/giants/michael-conforto-eager-giants-restart-after-missing-2022-mlb-season" rel="noopener">Conforto</a> mentioned in an interview that the feeling has been mutual as he admires the atmosphere of playing at Oracle Park. Health is the main priority, and he starts finding his rhythm without minding the external pressures.</p><h2><b>Taylor Rogers</b></h2><p>Like Conforto, Taylor Rogers was an excellent closer for the Minnesota Twins, but he has struggled the last year in the Milwaukee Brewers and San Diego Padres. As a one-time All-Star, Rogers must relax, stay calm and lower his 4.76 ERA from last season. That was by far the highest of his career, and there was even a time wherein the Padres removed him from the closer role before shipping him to Milwaukee.</p><p>In 2022, Rogers had ten blown saves, which is the worst of his career. Playing with his twin Tyler in San Francisco will be a welcome change for him, making the Giants’ bullpen formidable. The Rogers twins will back up a remarkable closer in Camilo Doval as the season begins next month.</p><h2><b>Sean Manaea</b></h2><p>Despite the stacked pitching staff, the Giants decided to lock up two veterans in the offseason to supplement their young rotation. Ross Stripling is coming off an impressive 2022 campaign with the Toronto Blue Jays, but Manaea must improve from his horrific performance last season.</p><p>His 2021 performance with the Oakland Athletics can be the barometer of his success when he possessed a WAR of 3.1, a career-best for Manaea. He had two complete game shutouts in his career and struck out an impeccable number of 194 strikeouts in 179 innings. With all the NL West squads bolstering their roster, it will be another tough campaign for San Francisco.</p><p>Even with this scenario, a couple of predictions will occur in the 2023 season of the Giants.</p><h2><b>Pitching becomes Giants’ No. 1 asset</b></h2><p>When San Francisco won their previous World Series Crowns, their primary asset was their pitching. The organization is known to grind it out with the best of them and steal it. Last season that turned out to be a massive problem because their bullpen lost steam in the end. However, he’s expected to serve as the San Francisco Giants’ primary DH during the 2023 campaign. But the Giants <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/joc-pederson-could-see-time-at-first-base-for-giants" rel="noopener">may opt to have</a> Pederson play some first base amid <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/giants-news-san-franciscos-brandon-belt-farewell-will-make-fans-teary-eyed" rel="noopener">Brandon Belt’s departure</a> from the ball club, per MLB.com’s Maria Guardado.</p><p>“[Manager Gabe Kapler] sent me some video of him,” president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said of Joc Pederson. “He looked really good. I forwarded it to [Pederson]. I was like, ‘Is this CGI, or is this real?’ But he’s pretty confident over there.”</p><p>Extra versatility never hurts in any sport, especially in baseball.</p><p>Pederson also addressed playing first base for the Giants, per Guardado as well.</p><p>“I think with Belt leaving and then you have LaMonte [Wade], we’re just a little shorter on depth at first than in the outfield,” Pederson said. “I’m not going to be the starting first baseman, by any means. It’s more so just a utility, depth type of role, from my understanding.”</p><p>Both Gabe Kapler and Farhan Zaidi believe he is capable of handling the position. In the end, San Francisco will do whatever it takes to keep Joc Pederson’s bat in the lineup, as his true value stems from his offensive production.</p><p>Pederson posted an .874 OPS while hitting over .270 to go along with 23 home runs in his All-Star 2022 campaign with the Giants. That includes dealing with the insane passion that Yankees fans bring each and every game.</p><p>Rodon is facing an immense amount of pressure after signing a six-year, $162 million contract with the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yankees-3-must-watch-new-york-prospects-in-spring-training" rel="noopener">Yankees</a> in December. Coming over from the San Francisco Giants, Rodon <a href="https://www.nj.com/yankees/2023/02/heres-why-yankees-carlos-rodon-will-be-a-big-fan-favorite-klapisch.html" rel="noopener">knows</a> that New York fans are different from those who cheered him on in the Bay Area.</p><p>“The fans here want to win. They care. They care a lot,” Carlos Rodon said, via nj.com.</p><p>“Giants fans are invested, but not like in New York,” the Yankees pitcher added “Win or lose, you’re not going to get booed in San Francisco.”</p><p>No Yankees player is safe from the wrath of New York fans if they aren’t playing well. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yankees-news-mlb-twitter-explodes-after-aaron-judge-booed-by-ny-fans-after-4th-strikeout-vs-guardians" rel="noopener">Aaron Judge</a> even received a smattering of boos in the Bronx during the 2022 playoffs. After setting the American League record with 62 regular-season home runs, Judge recorded just one hit when the Yankees were swept by the Houston Astros in the ALCS, and some fans let him hear about it.</p><p>The Giants failed to make the playoffs in the 2022 season. The Yankees were one of the last four teams standing. The season was considered to be a failure by much of the New York fanbase.</p><p>Rodon seems to welcome the challenge that comes with playing in New York.  The left-hander turned down big contract offers from other suitors to pitch in the pressure cooker that is the Bronx.</p><p>“There was just something about the Yankees,” Rodon said.</p><p>Rodon made an immediate impression when he arrived at his first spring training with the Yankees. New York’s No. 2 starter <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yankees-news-carlos-rodon-opens-spring-training-by-carving-up-hitters" rel="noopener">carved up Yankees hitters</a> in two simulated innings on Friday.</p><p>Rodon had a 2.88 ERA during his one season with the Giants. He finished sixth in the 2022 NL Cy Young race. One year prior, a 2.37 ERA in 24 starts for the Chicago White Sox was good enough for Rodon to finish fifth in the 2021 AL Cy Young race.</p><p>If Rodon can repeat those numbers and help bring the Yankees their first World Series championship since 2009, he’ll receive plenty of cheers from the New York faithful.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

They entered the winter months making it clear they wanted to spend big, and while they briefly did hand Carlos Correa a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/giants-news-carlos-correa-agrees-to-13-year-contract-with-giants" rel="noopener">massive contract</a>, they will exit the offseason missing out on each of their big targets. The Giants have made some more <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/from-taylor-rogers-to-mitch-haniger-grading-giants-mlb-free-agency-moves" rel="noopener">under-the-radar upgrades</a>, but for the most part, this team looks to be in a rather similar spot as they were in 2022.</p><p>In an offseason that’s been full of gloom, the Giants made a recent hiring on their coaching staff that should bring a smile to the faces of their fans. Kapler and the Giants recently decided to bring back former All-Star outfielder Hunter Pence as a <a href="https://twitter.com/EvanWebeck/status/1621938691857072128" rel="noopener">member of the coaching staff</a>, and given Pence’s contributions to the franchise as a player, this will surely make many Giants fans happy.</p><p>Via Evan Webeck:</p><p>“Gabe Kapler says the San Francisco Giants will have Hunter Pence in camp this year as a mentor/coach.”</p><p>Pence spent seven-and-a-half seasons with the Giants, and helped them win the World Series twice in 2012 and 2014. Pence quickly became a fan favorite, and he earned himself a spot on the Giants Wall of Fame thanks to his strong career with them.</p><p>Now, Pence gets to return to his beloved team to help out in a different role. Pence will be working as a mentor and coach for the Giants, and given his wealth of experience in the MLB, he should excel in this role. It’s great to see Pence making a return to the Giants, and it will be interesting to see how he ends up doing in his first year in this new role.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

McGee began his career with the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/tampa-bay-rays" rel="noopener">Tampa Bay Rays</a> and won a World Series with the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers" rel="noopener">Los Angeles Dodgers</a>.</p><p>It’s with the Rays that McGee wants to end his career. The 36-year-old <a href="https://www.tampabay.com/sports/rays/2023/02/03/rays-jake-mcgee-retire-dodgers-rockies-andrew-friedman-kevin-cash/" rel="noopener">did an interview</a> with the Tampa Bay Times explaining why the Rays organization means so much to him.</p><p>“They were the first team to give me an opportunity,” McGee said. “I was in the organization for 11 years. I know it was (only) six years in the big leagues, but I learned so much.”</p><p>“All the teams were really good when I was there. We were competing for the playoffs every year. And then we lived in Tampa, it was kind of our (fulltime) home for a while. So just being with the organization for all that time,” the former Rays reliever added.</p><p>McGee began his professional career as a starting pitcher in the minors. After becoming a reliever in the big leagues, the 36-year-old pitched to a career 3.71 ERA and 613 strikeouts in 650 appearances.</p><p>Those numbers aren’t world-beating on their own. However, they become more impressive when coupled with the fact that he threw one pitch the majority of the time.</p><p>McGee threw 9585 pitches over the 13 seasons of his career. 90% of those pitches were four-seam fastballs. At one point in his career, the former Rays reliever <a href="https://www.foxsports.com/stories/other/the-predictable-but-unhittable-jake-mcgee" rel="noopener">threw 206 fastballs</a> in a row.</p><p>The 36-year-old could have continued his career. He pitched for six teams and had opportunities to do it again. However, it was simply time to call it a day.</p><p>“I’d rather be at home with my family. I played 13 years. I won a World Series in ‘20. It’s about time to stop,” McGee told the Tampa Bay Times.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Bochy led the San Francisco Giants in a multitude of battles against the Los Angeles Dodgers during his managerial run with the team. On the other hand, Seager took part in one of baseball’s most heated rivalries for seven seasons while with the Dodgers.</p><p>During the Rangers’ Fan Fest <a href="https://twitter.com/BallySportsSW/status/1619445705302740992?s=20" rel="noopener">event</a> on Saturday, Seager took some time to touch on just what Bochy will bring to Texas this year. He also looked back at the seven-year period when he viewed the longtime manager as a rival.</p><p>“We were rivals back then, weren’t we?” Seager said.</p><p>Bochy and Seager now have the same goal in mind, as they will look to push the Rangers back into the postseason. The Rangers are coming off of a 2022 season where they finished in fourth place in the American League West standings with a 68-94 record.</p><p>The Rangers have gone all out in the offseason to provide the team with a fighting chance to achieve this feat, from winning the Jacob deGrom sweepstakes to bolstering the backend of their rotation with the additions of Nathan Eovaldi and Andrew Heaney.</p><p>For Seager, he now has his sights set on helping the team bounce back from its sluggish 2022 campaign.</p><p>“Everything’s a lot easier when you’re winning,” Seager said. “When you’re winning, things get covered up, relationships, things that happen, blah, blah, blah, right? And when you’re not, it’s trying to keep that in a room, keep it in a bubble, and keep it on the right path moving forward. You don’t want losing to spin you out from the goal you’re trying to succeed.</p><p>“I was never in that situation, where you’re trying to get somebody to buy in or hop on board. I think that was probably the hardest part about last year, just trying to get everybody in the right direction, no matter if you’re winning or losing. We took our lumps. They’ve taken the lumps the last couple of years, but we’ve still got to move this thing forward.”</p><p>A pivotal 2023 <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rangers-riskiest-mlb-offseason-move" rel="noopener">season</a> sure awaits Texas.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
