However, they have been <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cardinals-news-tyler-oneill-injury-update" rel="noopener">without Tyler O’Neill</a> for almost the entire month of May. As it turns out, there is no timetable for when he <a href="https://twitter.com/JohnDenton555/status/1663222097424809987" rel="noopener">will return</a>, either, per John Denton of MLB.com.</p><p>‘Asked for an update on LF Tyler O’Neill (low back strain), #STLCards manager Oli Marmol said the organization is “at a standstill.” O’Neill, who has been out since May 5, has been shut down from baseball activities three times because of persistent pain.’ </p><p>O’Neill last played on May 4, and he hasn’t had much success this season. Through the first six weeks, he has a .228 batting average with just two home runs and six RBI. It also isn’t encouraging that he has been shut down repeatedly from baseball activities due to pain.</p><p>The Cardinals have recently <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-cardinals-pondering-tyler-oneill-trad" rel="noopener">considered moving O’Neill</a> in hopes of adding more pitching, but this latest development will almost certainly keep teams away for the time being.</p><p>The slugger excelled in 2021, finishing with 34 home runs and 80 RBI before playing just 96 games in 202 with a .228 average and 14 home runs. In 2023, he has been a shell of his former self, which isn’t what the Cardinals have been hoping for. St. Louis is averaging 7.2 runs per game over its last 14 contests, including games of 12, 16, and 18 runs scored.</p><p>The Cardinals’ pitching, though, has not been as strong. The ERA of the team’s starting rotation sits at 4.89, the ninth-worst in the majors. Jordan Montgomery has been St. Louis’ best starter so far, but even his ERA sits at 4.21. Four other members of the rotation have ERAs over 5.00.</p><p>Tyler O’Neill has failed to repeat his fabulous 2021 season in which he hit 34 home runs and batted .286, leading to a Gold Glove Award and an eighth-place finish in the NL MVP voting. Last year, his average dropped to .228 and his power also decreased as he dealt with injuries.</p><p>In 2023, O’Neill’s home run rate is the lowest of his career and his strikeout numbers are up. He is batting .228 with two homers and six RBI in 92 at-bats and is currently on the injured list with a back injury.</p><p>Even with his offensive struggles, O’Neill is still a Gold Glove winner who is only 27 years old, making him an ideal trade bait for this Cardinals team. The current rumor is that the Cardinals are looking to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-cardinals-pondering-tyler-oneill-trad" rel="noopener">trade O’Neill for pitching</a>.</p><p>These are the teams that might be looking to swap a starting pitcher for Tyler O’Neill.</p><h2><b>Philadelphia Phillies</b></h2><p>Most teams would envy the outfield of the Philadelphia Phillies. Kyle Schwarber has as much power as anyone in the league, Nick Castellanos is an RBI machine, and Brandon Marsh has been a breakout centerfielder.</p><p>But this group is not as strong as many believe it to be. Schwarber is batting just .174, Marsh’s batting average dropped almost 100 points during the last month, and the metrics say that Castellanos’ hot start is unsustainable.</p><p>There are also serious concerns on the defensive end. Schwarber ranks among the <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/majors/2023-standard-fielding.shtml" rel="noopener">worst outfielders in MLB</a> with -8 defensive runs saved above average while Marsh and Castellanos are also negatives with the glove, per Baseball Reference.</p><p>The Phillies have yet to find a consistent fourth outfielder, with Jake Cave, Josh Harrison, and Dalton Guthrie proving unsatisfactory and Cristian Pache on the IL.</p><p>Like the Cardinals, Philadelphia has its own starting pitching issues, but the Phillies also need O’Neill’s glove and bat. St. Louis could receive a guy like Ranger Suarez in return here.</p><h2>Seattle Mariners</h2><p>Seattle’s young outfield duo of Jared Kelenic and Julio Rodriguez have demonstrated promise but are still searching for consistency, while veteran Teoscar Hernandez is a solid option in right field.</p><p>But the Mariners have gotten next to nothing from the DH spot and their backup outfielders, giving them no reliable bats off the bench.</p><p>While Seattle pitchers Marco Gonzales and Chris Flexen are both struggling after strong years in 2022, their underlying metrics suggest a second-half bounce-back in St Louis.</p><h2><b>New York Yankees</b></h2><p>With Aaron Hicks designated for assignment plus Giancarlo Stanton on the IL, the Yankees have a need for another outfielder. Oswaldo Cabrera and Willie Calhoun (combined .210 average and six homers in 214 ABs) are not the solution.</p><p>Tyler O’Neill gives New York a better option defensively while providing more pop with the bat.</p><p>The Yankees’ pitching is also not the strongest, but don’t be surprised if the club trades away someone like Domingo German or Luis Severino, then turns around and makes a blockbuster deal for a Cy Young candidate.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He has been out of the lineup since May 5. If all goes, well, he’s likely to return to the Cardinals lineup early next week.</p><p>When in the lineup this season, O’Neill has a .620 OPS and six extra-base hits in 29 games. He has yet to make an error in the field, living up to his elite fielding standards. O’Neill had a breakout campaign in 2021, clubbing 34 homers to the tune of a .912 OPS. He has won two Gold Glove Awards in his career.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cardinals-new-shocking-reason-willson-contreras-removed-starting-catcher" rel="noopener">Cardinals have been terrible</a> this season without O’Neill, taking an NL-worst 16-25 record into the middle of May. It’s still early, but surely the defending NL Central champions envisioned a much better start to their season.</p><p>Whether O’Neill coming back will lead to better results may not be guaranteed for the Cardinals, but it’s hard to imagine things getting much worse. The offense hasn’t necessarily been the problem, but getting a power bat back in the lineup and a steller glove out in the field has to make a positive impact.</p><p>Tyler O’Neill has the potential to be an all-star. Staying healthy has been a struggle for him, but if he can start to consistently stay on the field, he could turn into a real dynamic player for the Cardinals.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Yepez, who slugged 12 home runs in his rookie season last year, played in three games with the Cardinals in April, where he hit .333 and recorded one home run.</p><p>The Cardinals will now call on Yepez to help fill the void out in left field. Cardinals manager Oli Marmol has penciled in Yepez to patrol left field against the Detroit Tigers on Friday.</p><p>O’Neill has featured in 29 out of the Cardinals’ 32 regular season games so far this year. St. Louis’ road series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers last week was the previous time that he was ruled out from a game due to an injury; he was scratched from the team’s lineup due to back tightness.</p><p>O’Neill opened up the 2023 season on a promising note, but he has since failed to get much going at the plate. He posted a .100 batting average and struck out nine times in St. Louis’ last seven contests.</p><p>Overall, O’Neill has logged an OPS+ of 72 this season.</p><p>The Cardinals currently sit in <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/paul-goldschmidt-gets-brutally-honest-on-the-boos-cardinals-have-received-amid-10-22-start" rel="noopener">last place</a> in the National League standings with a 10-22 record.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
