Becky Hammon continues to break through the glass ceiling of professional sports. The Spurs assistant is receiving a promotion to the front of the bench on Gregg Popovich's staff per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. She will replace longtime Spurs assistant James Borrego who recently took over the reins as head coach of the Charlotte Hornets.

This comes as a brief respite for Spurs fans as most of the news out of San Antonio lately is related to the messy situation with Kawhi Leonard.

Hammon will take over as Popovich's top assistant and she's one step closer to becoming the NBA's first female head coach. Earlier this year, Hammon was a popular name floated in talks surrounding head coaching vacancies. But for now, she will retain a position on San Antonio's staff.

After joining Popovich's staff in 2014, the former six-time WNBA All-Star quickly cemented herself as a vital part of the coaching staff. In 2015, Hammon led San Antonio's summer league team to a title and further proved her ability to anyone who may have doubted her. Now heading into the 2018-19 campaign, Hammon will be Pop's right-hand man—well, right-hand woman.

The first female head coach in the NBA is coming sooner or later. Hammon could very well be the one to finally break through, but even if she isn't, the strides she has made for all women in professional sports are worth noticing.

It's an exciting time for all NBA fans as the league moves one step closer towards a brighter, more inclusive future.
