DeMar DeRozan is staying with the San Antonio Spurs. DeRozan informed the team today that he is exercising his $27.7 million player option for the 2020-2021 season, keeping him in the organization for at least another year, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports.

This is good news for the Spurs, who are looking to get back to their winning ways after missing the playoffs for the first time in 23 years last season. Their 22-year run of consecutive playoff appearances tied the Philadelphia 76ers record from 1950 to 1971 for the longest in NBA history. Three players on the Spurs roster, Luka Samanic, Keldon Johnson, and Lonnie Walker, weren't even born yet when the streak started.

DeRozan is heading into his third season with the Spurs after starting his career with the Toronto Raptors, where he helped rebuild the franchise along with Kyle Lowry. He is heading into his 12th season overall in the NBA.

While the Spurs have a good core group of players with DeRozan being flanked by LaMarcus Aldridge and Rudy Gay, the three of them were not enough to get the Spurs into the playoffs last season. Outside of those three, the talent level in San Antonio drops off considerably.

In order for the Spurs to get back to their winning ways under Gregg Popovich, San Antonio will look to sign some role players to complement their three star players. San Antonio also has the 11th pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, which analysts are considering a weak draft class.

However, Popovich, like Bill Belichick in the NFL, has been good throughout his career at finding undervalued players and making them into stars.

Especially in this draft with limited availability of seeing players, this might be the perfect opportunity for Pop to find a diamond in the rough.
