All-Star shooting guard DeMar DeRozan reportedly plans to opt out of his player option and become an unrestricted free agent this summer if he and the San Antonio Spurs aren't able to agree on an extension, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports.

DeRozan is making $27,739,975 this season with the Spurs. He has a player-option for the 2020-21 season worth the same amount.

If DeRozan declines that option, he’ll become an unrestricted free agent once this season ends and free to sign with any team of his choice:

The Spurs explored trade scenarios involving LaMarcus Aldridge and DeRozan at the February trade deadline. Aldridge is due $24 million in 2020-21.

In his first season with the Spurs, DeRozan averaged 21.2 points, 6.0 rebounds and 6.2 assists during the regular season. The Spurs lost to the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the 2019 playoffs in seven games. DeRozan put up 22.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.6 assists in the series.

This season, San Antonio is in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time in 23 years. The Spurs entered Tuesday in 12th place in the Western Conference standings.

For his part, DeRozan is putting up 22.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 5.5 assists on the season while shooting 52.8 percent from the field, 26.7 percent from beyond the arc and 84.4 percent from the free-throw line.

It would be interesting to see which teams DeRozan would meet with in free agency should he enter the open market. The four-time All-Star always seems to be linked to the Los Angeles Lakers since he's from California, but L.A. has to re-sign Anthony Davis to a max deal this offseason first.
